@RallidaeCrake Tom's videos are not meant to be a digital version of the instructions...it is a review. He tries to give you a feel for the game and gives his opinion on whether it is a good game or not and if it is something you may want to purchase. If you don't like his style of reviewing there are plenty of others out there who take a more instructional approach. Appreciate your reviews Tom!
And now about 6 minutes in I learn the game is likable because of how some plastic looks, and still almost nothing of the gameplay or why that might be fun. It has cards! But we know nothing about what they do. Phrases like "You can even have boarding actions" are meaningless. What the heck is that? Do we roll some dice? Why does that matter? How does playing this game work? Really wish this had some real content.
I'm three minutes in and I still know almost nothing about this game. Why not leave off the almost first minute of explaining to us you're going to do a review and tell us about the game? Like, "I liked this game." That would be a good opening sentence.
Wargames with hexes still being made? Yehah! I feel sorry for you folks who missed the wargaming heyday of the 70s and early 80s. We really were spoiled until Toys R Us killed the toy industry.
Agreed on the low ship count thing. I want an epic Star Wars Ep. 3 sized conflict. Ah heck, just make a Star Wars version of this game and I'm good. There is a lot of size and type variance in that universe, which could translate well to the game.
Great game, thanks for the review, the only beef I have wit the game is the thin ship cads, I laminated mine to save them. The figures are nice, and the game dynamics are very well done.
My wife got this for myself and my 8 year old for Christmas. Thanks for the quick review! I agree, it needs more ships, or bigger ones, or smaller board.
Other people report they are able to fit everything back into the box with the insert even after putting everything on the stands. There's a picture on BGG.
Looks rather interesting...I am glad to see a review of it, considering I saw it on the shelf and wanted to get it. I was curious though. Where does the 1-4 players that I saw on the box come in?
@igame4fun Some of the end senarios are two on one or two on two where you divide up the fleets into two different ones. Honestly its only ok since the meat of the game (out of the box) is designed for two players. Though with expansions to either these bases fleets or new races will of course change this.
Finally, a game that seems exciting! No offense but the recently reviewed games seemed to be all snooze-fests (not your fault-I enjoy honest reviews!). Always look forward to see more.
@kytodd True but even then its kinda large for the number of ships included. I just got done playing a "Mega" game with a freind of mine. We both have sets and build 100 pt fleets with full decks for each on both boards. This REALLY changed the makeup of the game when you double the energy gain. I think its for the expansions we all hopefully know that they are comming out with.
Thank you SO much for reviewing this one - saw it at the local shop and was wondering if I should pick it up. Getting to see the whole contents helped me decide!
@ThaDoctah : why would you worry about the insta-death dot roll? It's 1 dot in a 10x10 grid, that is a 1% chance. If you are REALLY concerned, then I doubt taking out the mechanic would change much of the game at all.
i bought it and have played a dozen or so times and do love it. While it really SCREAMS expand me i think its a good base game. I think with some additions and something like expert rules (rules for Raming, Ship facing and such) this game could really rock and show real longevity. The only real complain out of the box is the lack of different cards. There are too many of the same cards. I would of liked to see more one off cards and such. Either way great game.
I am also not a fan how it has no support from its own website. I would be interested in seeing what will be coming out from this game. I also agree there isn't enough in the game to make it playable more then a few times. It is a very enjoyable game none the less.
As much as I wanted to pick this up when I saw it, I also really need expansions. After buying Android, which is ok, I don't usually dive into a game anymore without at least a couple of expansions.
Game looks great, been looking forward to your review. Live battleship, I play space miniature combat games, this looks to be a good blend of the two. And yes, expansions are a must. Maybe that's the reason for the two boards, and not double sided.
Toms' daughter is going to as weird and awesome as tom.

Are there optional rules to remove the insta-death red dot roll? I just don't think I'd like losing a battleship to a random E-6 with shields down.

all over 1% ...pft lol
sabriath 7 months ago
@sabriath It's a 1 in 80 chance, not 1 in 100. 10 letters and 8 numbers in grid.

@JEKAZOL : oooooooo...so sorry, I thought it was 2 d10s, not a d10 and a d8. But seriously, 1.25%?

Don’t worry about expansions its made by hasbro and sold by wizards. So if you w8 they wil come.

I really like the aesthetics of this game - it reminds me of all those military SF books such as Starship Troopers, or RPGs such as Traveller.
I do want it, but I might wait to see if any expansions are announced before buying it.
