I am an atheist and although I find issues with his argument, I also find issues with your ideas on what is and is not atheist. An atheist does not believe in god, period. Atheists do not hold open the door for a possible trancendant divine, people that do that are agnostics. Atheists believe, without a shadow of a doubt that god or gods do not exist.

The reason atheists are considered intellectuals is because we've bothered to try to understand things rather than being mentally lazy and accepting this attitude. With understanding comes the realisation there are naturalistic explanations for everything, i.e. no need for a god; more over no evidence for a god. Sure, god might exist, but he's given us absolutely no evidence for his existence i.e. he's akin to a 'deadbeat dad' :P

The reason atheists are considered intellectuals is because we've bothered to try to understand things rather than being mentally lazy and accepting this attitude. With understanding comes the realisation there are naturalistic explanations for everything, i.e. no need for a god; more over no evidence for a god. Sure, god might exist, but he's given us absolutely no evidence for his existence i.e. he's akin to a 'deadbeat dad' :P
