Don't Normally Comment On These Things But To Answer "mddg1515", The Main Reason This Song Rocks Is Because Marc Bolan Of T. Rex Is Doing The Main Guitar Work - Not Jeff Lynne
Fantastic shows ... been lucky enough to see ..... the Mighty Kelly ... and how! He got us up and dancin' ....... Bev absolutely beat those skins into submission ... how can anyone sit still listening to this???????
When I was just a kid, living in Miami, maybe 11 years old, by sisters boyfriend bought her two LPs. Out of the blue, and Rumors by Fleetwood Mac. Up to that point, my dad never let us listen to "rock and roll" unless it was Elvis. The stereo system was two giant cabinets, one the record player with a giant 18 inch woofer, and the other just speakers. I listened to those two albums over and over again.
I love how everything kind of comes together as one at the 2:25 mark...great song...actually one of the first songs by ELO that got my attention...from then on it was an ELO love affair! LOL
@eightiesguy62 yes, that is just a shame, but elo has always been dissed, and I don;t know why since there are very few bands that even rate to be mentioned in the same sentence. As an example the midnight special cd's that came out a year or so ago..no elo !! what a crock. I remember I was in the 11 th grade when ma ma belle was first played on the radio and I was trying to find out who it was, when I did I was sold, then I realized it was the roll over Beethoven band, I seen 15 elo concerts!
@mreloo Yea....ELO has always been my second fav group behind only the Beatles...of course Jeff Lynne has always said the Beatles were his biggest influence and it has always been said that if the Beatles had stayed together longer they would have had the same sound that ELO created....ELO was/is a band in a category all its own....way ahead of their time.....I have never seen them in concert...I envy you so much! I wish the remaining members would get together and do at least one more tour!!
@eightiesguy62 elo concerts had a edge to them, but the music never suffered..Jeff's and Kelly's vocals were amazing live.. what's cool is I only missed one tour and that because I was in the service overseas, it was the "face the music" tour and that tour was filmed and is called "fusion" and of course the "spaceship" tour was filmed I seen that in Cleveland and Detroit. "ELOnut" on you tube has posted some great remastered clips of both concerts. I would check out ELOnut on his u tube channel
my fav ELO track which is a humble way of saying Their BEST...imho...and i never knew most of the words cos i played in in the Casablaca Cafe in Willis Street, Wellington (NZ) on the small juke boxes they had by each table...yeeehaa and now it's here 4ever
@donkeydick36 I didn't do it on this song, but I think I have accidentally pushed the "dislike" button on a few when the page jumped on the screen as I tried to push play. Too bad they don't have an "undislike" option because I can't be the only one that's happened to.
@donkeydick36 The same thing happens with ads on different sites. I've been wondering if they do that on purpose for the ads. I try to wait until the page stops moving around before clicking anything now. But not on this one, thankfully. I finally downloaded the entire Strange Magic (best of) album today. Definitely worth it.
One of Electric Light Orchestra's absolute best! Their first three albums are their high points. I also just heard about Mike Edwards' death. Not a good start to Labor Day. RIP, Mr. Edwards.
Is it just me or is the opening riff here kinda/sorta the same for Foghat's "Driving Wheel"? Foghat's song came out a couple of years later, but these two songs were shuffled back to back on my iPod which made me take notice. It sounds a bit like a faster guitar riff of Ma Ma Belle with a few changes. Any guitar nuts out there want to chime in on the similarities?
Man, why does this song (esp. the intro) still continue to kick me right in the ass. Yeeezus crickity Christmas, man...God save that Queen, Harry, his brother and all the rest of 'em...listening to this for the first time thru these studio monitors (Event 20/20's and a sub)...I'm hearing cool stuff we just didn't hear back in the 70's when this came out...glad I didn't die 'for I got old...turning 50 next yr...
@Gyphia Been trying to work out what the other chord in the intro is,to me it sounds like a C add 9 to me.If it is Marc cheekily used a variation on this chord sequence for his 1976 hit Laser Love(D/Dsus4 (Rpt)/ Cadd 9/C (Rpt).Listen to the song to see what I mean.
You can find a similarity if you really search for it, which you obviously did, the casual listener wouldn't notice any similarity...pass the joint and I might start agreeing with you.
@seventiesclassic hey Dont call me a moron u fuckin peace of shit....listen to both songs again and u will hear a similarity in the way they both sound!
Marc Bolan is actually playing on this according to the liner notes. This is so much better than the live version that is in a different key. This was the flipside of Livin' Thing when Livin' Thing was a hit. We bought that 45 in early 1977.
dunno for sure,, but the guitar track at 0.17 sounds like Marc. Marc got credits for guitar tracks on two of the versions of this song.. just dunno if this is one of them.. adds up that it is.. mebbe some one else can fill the blanks?
Jeff can still play this riff on his own, though. He wrote it, after all; plus, you can see him play it in other videos. Regardless, you just gotta love this song!
I never seen this photo on the album until today which is for the song "Oh No Not Susan". It is on another channel. I used to have this album with a photo of this group and this song is a little bit longer or has a very short song that precedes. It sounds scary and sounds like a symphony or an actual orchestra.
and that part starts after the song before it and before the guitar part. I was not on the list which makes it seem like it is part of this song. It is not lound and not mellow either unlike Ocean Breakup being listed. I wonder if that part was skipped. Maybe if somone were to put the song on that is before this for another video it would be with it. Too bad I still do not have it. I never had a record player though.
@britfrenir Do you mean In the Hall of the Moutain King (Peer Gynt), by Edward Grieg, that they recorded? It does evoke a sense of frenzy. Look at the tailer for the classic movie M; it's used for it, and the serial killer whistles it. Creepy!
