  • this song and showdown are just great songs period

  • 2:29 to 2:48 is EPIC

  • It wont get better than Ma Ma Ma Belle!

  • Don't Normally Comment On These Things But To Answer "mddg1515", The Main Reason This Song Rocks Is Because Marc Bolan Of T. Rex Is Doing The Main Guitar Work - Not Jeff Lynne

  • Incorrect there is twin guitars played by Marc & Jeff'

  • Jeff is GOD

  • @Donnachie51 Gonna break my usual pattern of avoiding making YouTube comments, especially on my own videos, to give this a big fat 'noooooope'.

  • @GasparLewis chuck testa!

  • Their only good song!

  • @Donnachie51 Not true.

  • Let's face the truth: this song crushes all modern music to atoms.

  • Love that crunchy guitar.

  • guitar by Marc Bolan of T.rex. Incidentally, a steal from Mott the Hoople: jerkin crocus.

  • Simply Amazing! Crank it wide open!

  • imho,, best accoustic lick ever?<, "Fire on HIGh",,

  • Fantastic shows ... been lucky enough to see ..... the Mighty Kelly ... and how! He got us up and dancin' ....... Bev absolutely beat those skins into submission ... how can anyone sit still listening to this???????

  • When I was just a kid, living in Miami, maybe 11 years old, by sisters boyfriend bought her two LPs. Out of the blue, and Rumors by Fleetwood Mac. Up to that point, my dad never let us listen to "rock and roll" unless it was Elvis. The stereo system was two giant cabinets, one the record player with a giant 18 inch woofer, and the other just speakers. I listened to those two albums over and over again.

  • "Wonderous is our great blue ship that sails around the mighty sun, and joy to everyone that rides along"

  • I love how everything kind of comes together as one at the 2:25 mark...great song...actually one of the first songs by ELO that got my attention...from then on it was an ELO love affair! LOL

  • @eightiesguy62 oh yea

  • @mreloo Did you know that neither ELO or Jeff Lynne himself are in the rock and roll hall of fame? Unbelieveable isn't it?

  • @eightiesguy62 yes, that is just a shame, but elo has always been dissed, and I don;t know why since there are very few bands that even rate to be mentioned in the same sentence. As an example the midnight special cd's that came out a year or so ago..no elo !! what a crock. I remember I was in the 11 th grade when ma ma belle was first played on the radio and I was trying to find out who it was, when I did I was sold, then I realized it was the roll over Beethoven band, I seen 15 elo concerts!

  • @mreloo Yea....ELO has always been my second fav group behind only the Beatles...of course Jeff Lynne has always said the Beatles were his biggest influence and it has always been said that if the Beatles had stayed together longer they would have had the same sound that ELO created....ELO was/is a band in a category all its own....way ahead of their time.....I have never seen them in concert...I envy you so much! I wish the remaining members would get together and do at least one more tour!!

  • @eightiesguy62 elo concerts had a edge to them, but the music never suffered..Jeff's and Kelly's vocals were amazing live.. what's cool is I only missed one tour and that because I was in the service overseas, it was the "face the music" tour and that tour was filmed and is called "fusion" and of course the "spaceship" tour was filmed I seen that in Cleveland and Detroit. "ELOnut" on you tube has posted some great remastered clips of both concerts. I would check out ELOnut on his u tube channel

  • i almost forgot about this song

  • I love the guitar at the beginning!!!!

  • We played this almost as much as Livin Thing (it was the flipside of the Livin Thing 45). The cello is wicked in this one.

  • Marc Bolan plays lead with Jeff Lynne

  • Word is Marc Bolan is on this track...needed to hear it. It's pretty heavy blues. I dig it.

  • @BODONable I heard that,too.

  • I have actually heard this song on the local metal/screamo station....

  • my fav ELO track which is a humble way of saying Their BEST...imho...and i never knew most of the words cos i played in in the Casablaca Cafe in Willis Street, Wellington (NZ) on the small juke boxes they had by each table...yeeehaa and now it's here 4ever

  • how do you get 96 likes and 1 fucking moron not liking. GET A LIFE PAL.

  • @donkeydick36

now there 97 likes ! kickin' Violin and Cellos besides guitar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @donkeydick36 I didn't do it on this song, but I think I have accidentally pushed the "dislike" button on a few when the page jumped on the screen as I tried to push play. Too bad they don't have an "undislike" option because I can't be the only one that's happened to.

  • @PlaygroundsWillLaugh okay, at leased you are honest.

  • @donkeydick36 The same thing happens with ads on different sites. I've been wondering if they do that on purpose for the ads. I try to wait until the page stops moving around before clicking anything now. But not on this one, thankfully. I finally downloaded the entire Strange Magic (best of) album today. Definitely worth it.

  • @PlaygroundsWillLaugh just click on the like button and that will clear the dislike. :)

  • That is pure guitar tone right there... Love that overdrive... Greatest tone EVER!!!

  • The most rocking song they ever did. I love the crank on the those first two chords. Crunch it!

  • @mddg1515 del shannon said he liked do ya so jeff did it over

  • I love the first age of ELO: on the third day, Out of the blue, New world record...

    those were the songs!!!

  • Love ELO this one is my favorite :)x

  • A piece of crude rock ,like "My Name is potter" from early supertramp...totally under-estimated.

But I found it a longtime ago ,and I love it .Still do!

    Bernard

  • @labora4best Could you post the Potter song? I can't find it on anywhere. Thanks!

  • just googled this to share on Facebook to show respect to Mike Edwards. RIP. x

  • One of Electric Light Orchestra's absolute best! Their first three albums are their high points. I also just heard about Mike Edwards' death. Not a good start to Labor Day. RIP, Mr. Edwards.

  • rip Mike Edwards

  • Marc Bolan uncredited performance.

  • Is it just me or is the opening riff here kinda/sorta the same for Foghat's "Driving Wheel"? Foghat's song came out a couple of years later, but these two songs were shuffled back to back on my iPod which made me take notice. It sounds a bit like a faster guitar riff of Ma Ma Belle with a few changes. Any guitar nuts out there want to chime in on the similarities?

  • This number epitomises their powerful signiature. Jeff Lynneis a genius. I've been a fan since the 70's. Fantastic but never truly acknowledged.

  • Man, why does this song (esp. the intro) still continue to kick me right in the ass. Yeeezus crickity Christmas, man...God save that Queen, Harry, his brother and all the rest of 'em...listening to this for the first time thru these studio monitors (Event 20/20's and a sub)...I'm hearing cool stuff we just didn't hear back in the 70's when this came out...glad I didn't die 'for I got old...turning 50 next yr...

  • So catchy!

  • was mr bolan playing giutar on this mighty fine tune ?

  • @supernog1 Bolan played one guitar, and Lynne played another, as I understand it. Which parts, I have no idea.

  • Jeff Lynne and Marc Bolan were good friends.

  • @Gyphia Been trying to work out what the other chord in the intro is,to me it sounds like a C add 9 to me.If it is Marc cheekily used a variation on this chord sequence for his 1976 hit Laser Love(D/Dsus4 (Rpt)/ Cadd 9/C (Rpt).Listen to the song to see what I mean.

  • @Gyphia

You can find a similarity if you really search for it, which you obviously did, the casual listener wouldn't notice any similarity...pass the joint and I might start agreeing with you.

  • @seventiesclassic

I'm sure people would tell you this all the time if anyone could stand being around you, but you are dick.

  • @givebeesachance

Looking at your username , I can't help but think that you calling me a dick is incredibly ironic...don't you agree ?

  • @givebeesachance

I just looked at the comments on your channel..seems to me you're a troll or something, you obviously take great pleasure in pissing people off.

  • @Gyphia

No, there is no similarity..did he pass you the waccy baccy?

    MORON !

  • MARC BOLAN Played guitar on the Electric Light Orchestra hit Ma-Ma-Ma Belle (though he was uncredited in the liner notes.).

  • @SirTedFairyspear Perfectly said- what could have been-the first four albums or so were of endless potential-then........ :(

  • for some reason this song greatly reminds me of the song "my woman from Tokyo" from deep purple....check it out!

  • @au05232003

It's called Woman From Tokyo...and there is no similarity...moron !

  • Comment removed

  • @au05232003

    Woman from Tokyo ??

WTF have you been smoking...? MORON !!!

  • Marc Bolan on double lead guitar with Lynne.

  • I started 3 different bands so we could play this....

    too much fun.

  • It don't get much better than this one, Top Stuff.

    Thanks ELO

  • This tune just honks-WAY under rated. The classic rock station in Detroit just sucks. They NEVER play this. 5 star cut

  • Real rock and roll!!

  • I've always loved this tune.

  • amazing underated song!

  • Marc Bolan is actually playing on this according to the liner notes. This is so much better than the live version that is in a different key. This was the flipside of Livin' Thing when Livin' Thing was a hit. We bought that 45 in early 1977.

  • I've posted the guitar riff in "video responses"...if any body is interested!

  • Twin lead guitars on all versions, Jeff on one, Marc on the other. Marc also lent Jeff his Gibson Firebird to play on this track.

  • Yes, Bolan is on this as well as Dreaming Of 4000.

  • I love this song,especially the opening riff..Classic ELO..Thanks..

  • dunno for sure,, but the guitar track at 0.17 sounds like Marc. Marc got credits for guitar tracks on two of the versions of this song.. just dunno if this is one of them.. adds up that it is.. mebbe some one else can fill the blanks?

  • Yep, its marc bolan on guitar.. great riff!

  • actually, im not sure if its marc bolan, or just jeff playing his guitar

  • If you go wikipedia, it credits Marc Bolan guitar.

  • Jeff can still play this riff on his own, though. He wrote it, after all; plus, you can see him play it in other videos. Regardless, you just gotta love this song!

  • great song.i prefer elo's early songs than the stupid disco 80's songs

  • iv heard this riff before, but i dont remember ever having heard the song

    did anyone cover it

  • I'm pretty sure this song was inspired by "Do Ya?"

  • Crank this bad mutha! A perfect rock record.

  • I never seen this photo on the album until today which is for the song "Oh No Not Susan". It is on another channel. I used to have this album with a photo of this group and this song is a little bit longer or has a very short song that precedes. It sounds scary and sounds like a symphony or an actual orchestra.

  • and that part starts after the song before it and before the guitar part. I was not on the list which makes it seem like it is part of this song. It is not lound and not mellow either unlike Ocean Breakup being listed. I wonder if that part was skipped. Maybe if somone were to put the song on that is before this for another video it would be with it. Too bad I still do not have it. I never had a record player though.

  • There is a short pause just before part of it so maybe he GasParLewis got confused or it does not go with a song like this.

  • @britfrenir Do you mean In the Hall of the Moutain King (Peer Gynt), by Edward Grieg, that they recorded? It does evoke a sense of frenzy. Look at the tailer for the classic movie M; it's used for it, and the serial killer whistles it. Creepy!

  • Check Mott's Jerkin' Crocus and see where Jeff nicked the licks.

  • Yeah. Still, both songs are great.

  • probably

  • It's Bev hitting the hi-hat.

  • there's a version with marc bolan playing guitar

  • Why did this guy get thumbs down? Besides, it's true! T.Rex ROCK!

  • Great tune. But by the way: What happens at 0:12?

  • part of the song i think bev hits the sides of his drum

  • Storming!

  • WOOT!!!!!
