@maxiliangel - Thanks. When I shot this, I had been shaving with a straight razor for about three years. It took a while for it to become routine. Thinking back on my first couple of shaves, it was pretty awkward shaving my chin and stuff. Probably took about six months before I could say I was actually GOOD at it. But the learning process up until that point is still fun.
I bought it at an antique store for $6.95 with nearly no pitting :D not much wrong with it, I just polished it and re-set the bevel on a 1K naniwa then took it to my belgium coticule. After that I used a series of diamond sprays and chromium oxide to bring it up to be the best razor I have ever owned. Word of advice...the super extra hollows have a bit of spring to them if you have a strong beard...
O G-d...Now you just inspired me to drink and shave with a murderous sharp instrument...:) I like it :D...next up... Repeat the above on a rollercoaster...need a filmographer...But seriously...great video and even greater creativity. Well done! Thank you. I have a pre-war boker extra hollow and I find the steel sharpens faster and sharper than any modern straight...perhaps I am just being bias?

Well, in a way, if the joke about badger fetuses can disgust people who would then turn to other shaving brushes, good for the badger ! ;-) I am right now testing 2 Vie-Long (spanish brand) brushes that are made of horsehair and I am really impressed by them. Horsehair was common for shaving brushes, such a brush was given to each soldier in the US army but there was some nasty disease in the 20's and horsehair disappeared. But they are perfectly safe now, so try it, it is worth it.
@CineMarktography - Ran out of space on the last comment. Here's a few more quotes, with exclamation marks and more upper case letters:

Good job! You make it look easy, but if I may, the number one rule for learners is to never move the razor laterally AT ALL; that is to say, go only in a strict up and down motion, keeping the angle of the blade constant. As soon as it moves sideways even a touch, it cuts, and viciously. The chin is the hardest part, so it's best to practice on cheeks and broad part of neck until proficient, and be sure to stretch the skin tight. Great video!
@elizabooom1 - Hey Elizabooom! Thanks for commenting! You're right, some of these things are pretty expensive, huh? Fornutately, anyone who wants to shave with a straight razor only really needs to buy one, and it'll last them their whole life. UNfortunately, once most people buy one, they start treating them like Pokeman and think they've "gotta catch 'em all." Heh.
"It took me at least two or three shaves before I could do it at this speed." at least?! ^^ I have a straight raizor, too.. and a safety razor.. both from Solingen, Germany, of course ^^ .. I'm from Germany, too, "ofcourse" - omg. Just wanted to mention, that till now I remained at the safety razor (which I got the same time I got the straight razor), because the jump from the Mach III to the trad. safety razor was maybe good enough with less exercice. But str.r skills are still looking nubile!
@sc0186 - Guten tag, und vielen Dank für beobachten. The safety razors are fun too, but yeah, a certain amount of practice is required for the straight razor. My main DE razor is from Germany too. A Merkur. I've got a Gillette from the 1930's too. You should check out my other videos too, sc0186! Lots of stuff on my channel page!
@johnnytastetest Hello, good day. I'm shaving with a Merkur 34c ..with Persona blades (never tried others). Actually timeless good shavers (Merkur). ... Straight razors need, aside the exercise to handle it properly, some care (leather strop, waterstone) ......and this is a reason, too, I didn't use my straight razor in the past. Since some time I have a leather strop...... and the razor is working/shaving/sharp.. but I'll need to get a high grain waterstone some day, too, I think. I'll see. Bye
7 months later ... and I partly blame this video: 70+ blades, 30+ soaps/creams, hones, strops, DEs, SEs, antiques including an ivory handle with 7 removable straight blades from the early 1800s, every imaginable material for scales, and even my own couple of personally restored mid 1800s blades.
Just wanted to come back and say thanks for the ride. I still down what's left in my whiskey glass at the end of my shave ... no matter how pricey the damn stuff is.
@DrDankoff - Holy smokes, that's a lot of work for just seven months! I know the Ivory set you describe. Good work on getting that one. I think I'd prefer a 7-day set with a separate razor for each day, though. Especially if ivory. I've got one ivory razor and it just feels so (to quote Gollom) PRECIOUS! I'm glad this little video was enough to get you interested, DrDankoff. It's really flattering to hear stuff like that in the comments. Keep updating me on your S.R. journey, dude! : )
@thedragonsmith1 - Hey, thedragonsmith! Thanks for watching and for your comment! If you find this kind of shaving amazing, rest assured that you can be doing it yourself very shortly. It'll take a bit of startup investment in the necessary items (and, of course, a bit of a learning curve), but from the day you start you're always improving. I say go for it. Why the hell not, right? Keep me and everybody else posted on how it goes!
@13Superkitsune - Hey 13Superkitsune! Yeah, that's one of the great things about straight razors -- they never clog up on you! Heh heh. Another great thing is that because you're sharpening them yourself when the occasion calls for it, you can make the thing damn-near perfect. This video marks the first time I had used this razor ever, and I had to sharpen it prior to using it. I'm proud to say I paid close attention to the work and I got a great edge as a result - just melted the hair off!
@TAM340R - Try reading the detailed "Show More" description...or the comments, where dozens of others have asked the same question....or underneath the view count where it lists not only the artist's name, but also provides a link to iTunes.
Good shave! I think you take a few risks around your jaw kine though. You shave like me too, with a drink and a smoke at hand. There is no better way to spend 10 mins than shaving like a badass cowboy, I love it. Tunes were good too and I'd like to ride on your bus some day. Bet that's a real eye opener after you've done a half bottle of moonshine!!!
@peadee66 - Heh heh. Thanks, peadee66! I know what you mean about the jaw-line thing, too. I tend to go especially fast on the throat and neck area, and it looks like it's dangerous; but back when I did some of my first straight razor shaves, I was pleased to discover it was the easiest area to do, 'cause you can make it quite taught with stretching, and it's largely a flat surface when you do. Anyway, thanks a lot for watching and commenting!
hey johny boy gr8 vid I really njoyed it, pl. tell me is in necessary to use right and left hands also which one is a good razor, since I hv bought a razor from a local barber shop last 3 weeks I am shaving wid a straight razor it cuts very time,
@auzen3 - Hi Auzen. If you're just starting, cutting yourself is pretty normal. You've got to bleed before you learn. That's just the way it goes with straight razor shaving. Nearly all of my razors are vintage. Like...really vintage: 1950's or earlier. Did you get yourself a straight that takes DE blades at the barber shop? 'Cause they're as sharp as sharp gets, and cut very easily. Get yourself a German or English vintage blade in good condition on eBay, and sharpen it yourself.
Hi johnny very nice video, very inspiring I started shaving with a straight razor abt 3 weeks ago but I just cant get is right every time there's a one or two snip, could it be I amusing the wrong kind of razor?? can u tell me which oneis the best type?? and also is it necessary to shave with both hands on both the cheeks thanks take car
@13Voodoobilly69 - Self-taught. A few years back I was visiting home, and at the dinner table I said to my Dad, "I'm thinking about learning how to shave with a straight razor!"
His horrified response was (and I quote), "Oh, GOD!"
Great Vid. I went to Walmart to but a DE but there were all gone even the blades.. Nothing so it got me thinking hmm ...straight razor. I am really tired of paying 3 bucks for the Gillette fusion blades. Although it shaves well its the cost. So I am looking for an alternative, Thanks!
@medun4o2 - When using a straight razor, you strop it before each shave. Since I have a couple dozen or so razors, it's hard to say how often an individual one makes it back to the hone, but if a person is using one razor exclusively, they'll probably need to refresh its edge on the stone every couple of months or so.
@johnnytastetest I actually have read that your method is a better process because you're forced to hone your straight edge skills and can't cheat. I also noticed you use your left and right hand while shaving, great technique! I am going to force myself to do the same
@cartisdm - Yeah, that's the neat thing about honing your own razors - as you first start, you'll often ask yourself, "Am I doing this right?" Then you'll shave with it. If you then have to wonder, "I wonder if this is sharp enough?" you've got to head back to the stone, because when you've done it correctly, it just melts the stubble off like a laser beam. And yeah, the sooner you train yourself to use both hands, the better. Makes you more adept at shaving.
Great video man. I've came across Wet Shaving randomly on the internet last week and just ordered my first DE razor, brush, soaps, etc. Next paycheck I'll also be getting a straight razor to try on the weekends.
@cartisdm - Nice. Yeah, sounds like you're gonna be all set up. I did things the opposite from what most wet shavers do - I learned how to use a straight razor, and then I went out and bought a DE. They're both fun, though.
@killiononthejob1 - Thanks, killiononthejob1! There have been 689 comments so far, but yours has got to be one of my favourites. Straight razor shaving is a lot of fun, so I say go for it. And heck, even if you don't shave with one, feel free to carry it around with you wherever you go. People are a lot less likely to mess with you if you flail one of those things around in public as you yell random stuff. Such as, "WHICH OF YOU FUCKERS TOOK MY MEDS?!!" *Swoop-Swoop! Swish!*
@delancey100 - Thanks, delancey100! You raise an interesting question, too: exactly what are Paris Hilton's standards? I'm sure someone knows how to work a Twitter.
@fartx211 - Heh heh. Yeah, that's just how I roll, you know? I appreciate you watching and commenting, fartx211!
By the way, I have tons of other videos too! All kinds of politically incorrect and/or weird sketches and stuff. I hope you check 'em out and leave me some more comments! : )
Drinking before shaving ? speechless !! Do drink an hour before, and finish a bottle of 2, more people can see your photo in the news with the razor in the throat during your last shave for the life!!.. LOL, dude, dont mix things.
@johnnytastetest I do at least two passes as well. Point being we shave a little differently. But that's what's so great about this art, you can tailor it to your needs.
@johnnytastetest 10 minutes? I've never taken more than 2 minutes to build up a nice, thick lather. On the other hand I also don't shave as quickly and aggresively as you
@hcoll - Yeah, I'm not one to work for ten minutes building a big lather. A little dab'll do ya. For the first pass I apply a decent amount, and on the second pass, even less. Plus, I wanted people to be able to see more of what was going on. I think as long as you're using quality cream / soap and a quality badger brush, you're good. Thanks for watching and for your comment, hcoll! Happy shaving. : )
I'm waiting for my first straight razor to arrive in the mail shortly. I noticed in your description that you use a Shavemac brush. I was looking at buying one for a while now... May have to get one now that I have seen your bid.
@zigar01 - Yeah, the Shavemacs are really nice. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Mine looks and performs exactly as it did when I got it several years ago now. If you decide to get one, I'd opt for the best grade of badger that's available. It'll cost a little more, but I've had the opportunity to try the various grades before, one after the other, and there is a very noticeable difference between "Best," "Silvertip," and the top notch, "Super Silvertip."
Dude you are just so confident ,music and the way you shave looks so normal ,got my razor today shave for first time toke me so long ,but did not cut myself :) .all the best mister .
@StergatorDeParbriz - Hey, that's awesome. You're going to have fun practicing, I'm sure. When I first started it took me a really long time to complete a shave, too. The thing is, this type of shaving is very unfamiliar for most people, so just like any new task, you've got to develop muscle memory before you can go very quickly. The fact you didn't cut yourself is very encouraging, though. If you can continue to avoid the nicks and cuts, the rest will come easy. Thanks for watching, too!
I have been contemplating my first straight razor save for some time. My friend brought up his grandfather's razor today and I watched your video for technique. What I got was inspiration! I'm going to do this thing. Way cool
@HUSJamesdingman - Awesome! I wish you luck on your first shaves. Let me know if you have any questions later on, and if so, I'll try my best to help.
@johnnytastetest Everyone has their own taste =D But seriously I was like why the f*** a woman is teaching how to use a razor. No disrespect though, just sayin...
can you tell us how? like directions. this would be a lot more helpful than just showing off. I've seen a ton of videos just like this and not one has taught me how.
@rollermaul22 - Remember when Mr. Miagi scoffs at Daniel for trying to learn Karate from a book? This is kind of the same thing. I could write you a straight razor shaving instruction manual, but because everyone starts developing their own personal style right from the beginning, it'd be useless. I'm no sorcerer - just pick up a sharp blade, put it to your face and start "painting the fence."
good video. how long did it take to get used to the straight edge?

The single blades I've seen look more like knives, also very expensive
elizabooom1 7 months ago

But str.r skills are still looking nubile!
sc0186 8 months ago
@sc0186 - Guten tag, und vielen Dank für beobachten. The safety razors are fun too, but yeah, a certain amount of practice is required for the straight razor. My main DE razor is from Germany too. A Merkur. I've got a Gillette from the 1930's too. You should check out my other videos too, sc0186! Lots of stuff on my channel page!
johnnytastetest 8 months ago

PS: Still not shaving this well.
DrDankoff 8 months ago
@DrDankoff - Holy smokes, that's a lot of work for just seven months! I know the Ivory set you describe. Good work on getting that one. I think I'd prefer a 7-day set with a separate razor for each day, though. Especially if ivory. I've got one ivory razor and it just feels so (to quote Gollom) PRECIOUS! I'm glad this little video was enough to get you interested, DrDankoff. It's really flattering to hear stuff like that in the comments. Keep updating me on your S.R. journey, dude! : )

thedragonsmith1 8 months ago
@thedragonsmith1 - Hey, thedragonsmith! Thanks for watching and for your comment! If you find this kind of shaving amazing, rest assured that you can be doing it yourself very shortly. It'll take a bit of startup investment in the necessary items (and, of course, a bit of a learning curve), but from the day you start you're always improving. I say go for it. Why the hell not, right? Keep me and everybody else posted on how it goes!

13Superkitsune 9 months ago
@13Superkitsune - Hey 13Superkitsune! Yeah, that's one of the great things about straight razors -- they never clog up on you! Heh heh. Another great thing is that because you're sharpening them yourself when the occasion calls for it, you can make the thing damn-near perfect. This video marks the first time I had used this razor ever, and I had to sharpen it prior to using it. I'm proud to say I paid close attention to the work and I got a great edge as a result - just melted the hair off!

CurtisAlfeld 9 months ago
Good shave! I think you take a few risks around your jaw kine though. You shave like me too, with a drink and a smoke at hand. There is no better way to spend 10 mins than shaving like a badass cowboy, I love it. Tunes were good too and I'd like to ride on your bus some day. Bet that's a real eye opener after you've done a half bottle of moonshine!!!
peadee66 9 months ago
@peadee66 - Heh heh. Thanks, peadee66! I know what you mean about the jaw-line thing, too. I tend to go especially fast on the throat and neck area, and it looks like it's dangerous; but back when I did some of my first straight razor shaves, I was pleased to discover it was the easiest area to do, 'cause you can make it quite taught with stretching, and it's largely a flat surface when you do. Anyway, thanks a lot for watching and commenting!

hey johny boy gr8 vid I really njoyed it, pl. tell me is in necessary to use right and left hands also which one is a good razor, since I hv bought a razor from a local barber shop last 3 weeks I am shaving wid a straight razor it cuts very time,
auzen3 9 months ago
@auzen3 - Hi Auzen. If you're just starting, cutting yourself is pretty normal. You've got to bleed before you learn. That's just the way it goes with straight razor shaving. Nearly all of my razors are vintage. Like...really vintage: 1950's or earlier. Did you get yourself a straight that takes DE blades at the barber shop? 'Cause they're as sharp as sharp gets, and cut very easily. Get yourself a German or English vintage blade in good condition on eBay, and sharpen it yourself.

auzen3 9 months ago
@auzen3 - Yeah, after every shave you do, you're going to get a little better. Don't give up. Just keep at it, and before long, you'll be a pro.

Did you learn the art of shaving from family or are you self taught? I am just getting into it after becoming hooked on knife sharpening.
13Voodoobilly69 10 months ago
@13Voodoobilly69 - Self-taught. A few years back I was visiting home, and at the dinner table I said to my Dad, "I'm thinking about learning how to shave with a straight razor!"
His horrified response was (and I quote), "Oh, GOD!"
He's always had a beard though, so...
Heh heh.

inertia2004 10 months ago
how often do you strop/hone it?
medun4o2 10 months ago
@medun4o2 - When using a straight razor, you strop it before each shave. Since I have a couple dozen or so razors, it's hard to say how often an individual one makes it back to the hone, but if a person is using one razor exclusively, they'll probably need to refresh its edge on the stone every couple of months or so.
johnnytastetest 10 months ago
@johnnytastetest I actually have read that your method is a better process because you're forced to hone your straight edge skills and can't cheat. I also noticed you use your left and right hand while shaving, great technique! I am going to force myself to do the same
cartisdm 11 months ago
@cartisdm - Yeah, that's the neat thing about honing your own razors - as you first start, you'll often ask yourself, "Am I doing this right?" Then you'll shave with it. If you then have to wonder, "I wonder if this is sharp enough?" you've got to head back to the stone, because when you've done it correctly, it just melts the stubble off like a laser beam. And yeah, the sooner you train yourself to use both hands, the better. Makes you more adept at shaving.
johnnytastetest 11 months ago
Great video man. I've came across Wet Shaving randomly on the internet last week and just ordered my first DE razor, brush, soaps, etc. Next paycheck I'll also be getting a straight razor to try on the weekends.
cartisdm 11 months ago

Swish!*

@johnnytastetest I do at least two passes as well. Point being we shave a little differently. But that's what's so great about this art, you can tailor it to your needs.
hcoll 1 year ago
@johnnytastetest 10 minutes? I've never taken more than 2 minutes to build up a nice, thick lather. On the other hand I also don't shave as quickly and aggresively as you
hcoll 1 year ago
Doesn't look like much of a lather...
hcoll 1 year ago
@hcoll - Yeah, I'm not one to work for ten minutes building a big lather. A little dab'll do ya. For the first pass I apply a decent amount, and on the second pass, even less. Plus, I wanted people to be able to see more of what was going on. I think as long as you're using quality cream / soap and a quality badger brush, you're good. Thanks for watching and for your comment, hcoll! Happy shaving. : )

I'm waiting for my first straight razor to arrive in the mail shortly. I noticed in your description that you use a Shavemac brush. I was looking at buying one for a while now... May have to get one now that I have seen your bid.
zigar01 1 year ago
@zigar01 - Yeah, the Shavemacs are really nice. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Mine looks and performs exactly as it did when I got it several years ago now. If you decide to get one, I'd opt for the best grade of badger that's available. It'll cost a little more, but I've had the opportunity to try the various grades before, one after the other, and there is a very noticeable difference between "Best," "Silvertip," and the top notch, "Super Silvertip."

StergatorDeParbriz 1 year ago
@StergatorDeParbriz - Hey, that's awesome. You're going to have fun practicing, I'm sure. When I first started it took me a really long time to complete a shave, too. The thing is, this type of shaving is very unfamiliar for most people, so just like any new task, you've got to develop muscle memory before you can go very quickly. The fact you didn't cut yourself is very encouraging, though. If you can continue to avoid the nicks and cuts, the rest will come easy. Thanks for watching, too!

@rollermaul22 - Remember when Mr. Miagi scoffs at Daniel for trying to learn Karate from a book? This is kind of the same thing. I could write you a straight razor shaving instruction manual, but because everyone starts developing their own personal style right from the beginning, it'd be useless.
