  • for different reasons, i agree. could be that when speech transcription becomes mainstream, people will become self-trained to "speech-type" as proficiently as people can type today. learn to "write" by talking. could even mean that people start talking with good grammar for a change.

one problem i see is that most people have preferences for certain punctuation marks, and unless "grammar check" can be programmed with someone's personal written style, keyboards will still be useful for editing.

  • Can the Horn be left foot tap twice Universal?

  • That should be interesting as a programmer lol!

    e-c-h- no no i said V! What!!?!!?

  • How about this question:

Home programming as an occupation ?

  • Hold down number 3 :D

  • I doubt it, it's not going to work in quiet places such as a library or a office, it could maybe be useful for home use though.

  • I highly doubt speech recognition will replace the keyboard. That's like saying typing up stuff on Microsoft Word using your voice, or playing a game that requires a keyboard with your vocal chords. But still, there's a low possibility that speech will ever replace the keyboard, as the keyboard is one of the most important computer peripherals.

  • of context

  • In the future an atmosphere aware AI will be availible within the OS that knows you and keeps your id safe as well as understands your goals and works with you to accomplish them in a 3d operating invironment as if you and a buddy were working on a car together. Verbal communicating would be simular to that so as you work with your hands, your assistant offers you a hammer when you need it and quietly keeps record of your conversations and formats them in a structured way with an advanced sense

  • @dotails Iron Man much?

    reps!

  • Oh please no, that would be a headache of so many voices colliding with each other.

  • No. Never. For soooooo many reasons. Privacy: You don't want to everyone around you to hear your passwords or what you're searching or entering into the computer. And it's simply impractical for many uses such as gaming, programming or writing a formal document, essay or article. Speech recognition will definitely evolve, but keyboards (virtual or not) will always be needed.

  • Who is coming up with these fucktarded questions?

  • It will not happen. If it does, we will be unable to program! I would hate to say "dot" "bracket" etc if I was programming. lol.

  • Good question. I was thinking of a controller that's not entirely a touch screen. Maybe just for the buttons you tap, something more sensitives for a quicker reaction maybe. Just an idea that popped into my head.

  • go to 2.07....enjoy

  • @GeekSpeakTV - Why? :)

  • @lockergnome Your insanely expressive face + the pause button makes for a great night. As long as you've got some Pirillo juice ;)

  • i don't see it going. i mean if the deaf or mute or even if u had a injury that make speech impossible. speech software will not work

  • I'm waiting for the day you say "four hands on the road and tow eyes on the wheel". Although you probably already have and just edited it out. :(

  • @redsplash168 - I've never made that mistake. :)

  • 1:15 sick as fuck

  • I would like to see touch screen gaming controllers for systems like Xbox or PS3, now that would be cool!

  • @FearlessHyena82 how would u play with friends lol

  • I hope not. That would be goddamn annoying, not to mention inconvenient in places where you can't / would rather not talk.

  • I think handwriting recognition will get very popular but not even that will replace the keyboard

  • I hope not, OMG imagine gaming with voice recognition, or making desgn work or coding with voice recognition. Horrible

  • YouTube offers 4K resolution, a playlist with five videos. Search: "4k Resolution"

    Have Fun :)

  • I don't think it'll replace it but it will abind with it.

  • Another issue with no keyboard is in office or classroom settings. Can you imagine a classroom of 25 kids writing a paper, by talking to their computer? It wouldn't be possible.

  • do you think there will be printers in portable devices like the iPad or iPod touch or even a didgital camera? Do U think digital cameras themselves will go obsolete in five years? Please respond! remember to subscribe to my channel! thank you

  • for typing? maybe

  • check out >>"Windows phone newsroom: webcast" <<posted yesterday by Microsoft. It includes software INNOVATIONS!!1 example is say u'r on windows7 mobile, u'r listening to music with headphones or bluetooth & theres a text message sent 2u, the music stops, an automated voice tells u who just text u, then reads the text for u and then u can choose 2 ignor or reply via "verbal voice" a text back & edit the voice text or choose send. All with NO HANDS MOM!! then u'r music starts playing again.. \:)

  • 0:38 = roooooaaarr XD

  • i use speech recognition to text in the car ;)

  • Turn left! no, my left!! shoot that guy over there, no not him his my friend!!God i will sound so retarded!!

  • have you seen the space navigator mouse?

  • haha, answer: no

you can't type stuff like "zomg i can haz cheeseburger? w/ catsup, LOL jk xD GEEZUS!" with voice control. exept if you spell out the sentences which would take 10 times longer than just typing it.

  • Would say no! Why how would you like to write porn.

  • I'm sorry but this was a stupid question lol

  • Will gaming consoles completely replace PC games?

  • @darkfang5820 why should they? PC will always be there as a platform.

  • Imagine logging in to your bank account to check the balance etc. ...

and if ur a teen and u chat about girls ...

  • speeh wil not replace keyboard it wil just become a part of the pc later on a few years from now

  • Will Laptops replace Desktop PC?

  • @LeonHau5 Deffo not

  • speach recognition is for blind people...lol

  • Chris Pirillo has it spot on. Speaking and writing are two different disciplines. I know many great speakers who cannot write for shit for example. This becomes much more important in the world of digital communication, where emails and text messages need to be concise and quick. These types of situations require skills in writing that can't be duplicated with the spoken word, only due to the fact that it would "sound" really bad.

  • Ok this is exciting stuff I got an iphone for it's dragon nuance dictation app so I could write a book on the go. As you noted it doesn't work well. Here's the key to streamlining it, redesign language in general. English has become so fragmented and people so creative, that we are primed to organize our communication. Here' a question I'd like to hear your thoughts on, will speach replace touch/cursor interfacing.

  • can anyone speak computer language?........ noooooo therefore what r u going to use to program?

  • have you tried the app VOXER it replace typing texts with voice texts, its pretty cool

  • I highly doubt speech would ever replace the keyboard. If nothing else, simply because of universities and offices where it would be absolutely ridiculous to have a room full of people talking all day long. But also, as a journalist, I could never do all of my writings by talking, they take too much word choice and self editing.

  • I don't see speech recognition replacing the keyboard entirely.

Speech recognition has come a long way and is better now in OSs like Windows 7 but far from perfect. I can see many purposes in which some people might ditch the keyboard in say 10 to 20 years as speech recognition gets better. Gaming and programming isn't on the list.

For gaming however, I could see more people turning to Microsoft Kinetic if the Windows 8 rumor is true or more people using game controllers in the near future.

  • maybe mind control will replace mouse and keyboard?

  • Unless you don't have to talk like a robot for the command to go through, no.

  • NEVER SAY NEVER MY FRIEND ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE ((~*{

  • no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no........ Its Crap

  • NEVER!

  • Yes, had it since Star Trek.

  • Speech recognition will never replace the keyboard. Maybe replacing the keyboard for general users, however for computer programming it'd be a nightmare. All of the special characters that are used in programming would make programming by speech a nightmare. If I didn't have a keyboard I'd have to say ( ) { } $ ; every time I used them which is at least once per line, usually several times. Multiply that by thousands of lines of code and it's a waste of time. That's my thought.

  • i have tried windows speech recognition even that it is dodgy i would prefer to type

  • Man hosting and playing counter strike with speech NNNNNOOOOOO

    I DON'T THINK SO !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well no, a lot of people including me don't want to say everything I type, if it did what would be the point of email or test verses calling? or voicemails?

  • No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No and NO!

  • Short answer No.

Could you imagine playing a PC game especially FPS games with voice control?

  • @ULT1MATEGAMER thats a game hes talking mostly for web surfing and other uses gaming are u retarted

  • chris just reply to these dumb questions by typing a response instead of making a whole video about it and going all in depth in an answer to these random questions

  • @ULT1MATEGAMER "Turn left! No, not that left! Shoot! No, keep shooting! Not at him!"

  • @ULT1MATEGAMER If realism is where we are moving than FPS's should be moving to motion controls. But I see what you mean and pretty much agree.

  • @ULT1MATEGAMER what about other technologies such as virtual reality

  • @robb180t i wanna play games not die!!!

  • @ULT1MATEGAMER Maybe eye controls ?

  • @ULT1MATEGAMER maybe those games could track eye movement ?

  • @JazzyPhil59 Maybe you could just say 'Kill Him'. :P

  • @ULT1MATEGAMER Or trying to be quiet e.g. nighttime but chatting with someone or surfin' the web. Talking is also more tiering than typing. Keyboard won't be replaced by speach recognition.

  • @ULT1MATEGAMER - I can't imagine playing one now. :)

  • And how are you going to type commands on the Terminal ?

  • Not until they find a solution for gamers...perhaps that one special thing you used to type a sentence with your mind? If they could perfect that, you wouldn't need a mouse, keyboard, or even voice recognition.

  • No as how can you play games with Speech Recoginition, it will be like "go to that building, shoot that person" Etc.

  • No abandoning of keyboard !!!!

  • ppl, just type in michio kaku, ray kurzweil, kevin warick, nanotechnology, quantum computers, tele imersion and technocalyps and every one of these ideas will be coming in the next 10-20 years! :)

  • Big

Q do you that because of the smart-phone will ever replace things like the laptops or netbook -or desktop in what they can do and more etc and do you think android will ever be moded for the desktop ? ? ? ? ?

  • I don't like speech recognition.

I feel like an idiot talking to my computer...

  • No, not everyone has a golden voice. What if you get tired talking?

  • i hope not, im a mute no joke

  • I have a stuttering problem so I hope it doesn't lol

  • ! problem if your deaf well speach recognition is useless, andone can use a key board, even the blind(obviosly not standard it'd be brail) but speach recognition is also a problem for those with speaking disorders, also its noisy, say if your looking at well things you don't want others to know then a kry bord is perfect one tap sounds like another, well exept space

  • Chris do you ever feel sick and tired of your job and want to quit?

  • Talking to computer for hours is tiring.

  • dragon is probably the best out there right now.

  • Plus, if you're similar to me, you need time to think in between typing.

  • Imagine when you're searching for porn..

  • What will be the future of Monitors? will they be better than HD? will they be like the screans u see in the movie Avatar? perhaps? please respond

  • @the1000th1 screens like in Avatar already exist lol. So how where those monitors, TOUCHSCREEN, exists, TRANSPARENT, (OLED) exists .... ROUNDED , EXISTS (FOLDED OLED ) ..here is your answer...

  • like @the1000th1 said. The technology for screens like in Avatar exist, it's just not commercially viable right now. You can't pick up a transparent touch screen monitor from newegg for a couple of hundred dollars yet - maybe when the manufacturing processes have become cheaper and easier we'll see them in 5 years or so. lol

  • @the1000th1 how is he supposed to know?

  • @the1000th1 They may look cool, but are not practical for everyday use, 3d will become more common, but hologram projections are not practical. They may be available to masses but, are still not good for production.

  • @the1000th1 Yeah the Future of Monitors and TVs is Ultra High Definition Television (or UHDTV, Ultra HDTV, 4320p, and Ultra High Definition Video (UHDV). Number of pixels: 7,680 × 4,320, Aspect ratio: 16:9

  • @the1000th1 Lol. Computer screens already run higher than 1920x1080 HD and have for a long time.

  • @the1000th1 i use 3 1080p monitor in eyefinity enabling me to play at crazy resolutions!!!!

  • @the1000th1 You'll probably be able to get a 30" display with the resolution of 5000x3000p :D

  • @the1000th1 think were gonna use some kind of hologram devices. And answer for this video: speech recognition will never completely replace the old stuff

  • @the1000th1 4k is already something that is better an HD. So there is no doubt that 4k monitors will be the next big thing in the years to come. Plus, most movies are recorded in 4k but the quality gets downgraded to HD (Blu-ray) or 480p (DVD). So yes, there will be monitors better than HD

  • @the1000th1 Imo like screens in Avatar (curved AMOLED panels). Transparency (if needed) isn't a problem with OLED. The ageing problem will be fixed. Maybe we will see some ultra HD resolution like quad FulHD?

  • @the1000th1 - That's not a bad question.

  • @lockergnome well i appreciate your support. Perhaps you can do a video about my question? can you possible subscribe to my youtube channel? Thanks!

  • imagine trying to dirty text with speech, now that would be weird. especially if your in a library or at school even worse if your at the dinner table XD

  • I use a Dvorak keyboard :)

Someone needs to invent thought-to-speech. But it would have to have pairing so that someone can't steal my thoughts :)

  • It won' replace the keyboard. NEVER.

  • on a mobile phone maybe. But on a computer? I don't think so...

  • i don't think so like when in chat with a friend.

but just for writing a paper for school a must.

i use note pad to type faster then paste it like in this comment.

pc just wont keep most of time when i'm online

  • Average man speaks 7000 words a day. Increasing it may be too exhausting for many. It requires a lot more energy than writing.

  • I've taught my mouse to obey basic voice commands like left, right, scroll, double click etc.

  • Which science fiction gadget might turn into a reality?

  • Average man speaks 7000 words a day. Increasing it m

  • I agree. I've used Dragon Naturally Speaking and it's not that good.

  • I think there are sometimes where you just want to type something. Try typing symbols or an address, or something that has to be formatted perfectly. Plus, sometimes you just "have" to type rather than talk. For example, if I'm in a quiet environment, I don't want to be awkwardly talking into my phone or laptop, I would just type one the keyboard and make almost no noise at all.

  • chris looks like shepard from masseffect

  • I dont thing it will ever happen. How would you write code and other things. And if somethings wrong you need to edit it. And in libraries and stuff you cant have everyone talking aloud to write papers. So i say yes it will be use a lot more. But never completely replace a key board. Not speech anyway. Something else maybe.

  • try at night? try at a live bloggging sesh, try in a loud class room, try sending a n im in skype? try playing games

    'CLICK' .'where?'

  • Speech is alright as long as it remains at the imperative level, a keyboard is applicable to any text entering situation.

  • but other than that it's not worth it

  • I use speech recognition for typing school papers and notes, buy

  • what car u driving ? is it high tech in some sort ? XD

  • This Is Illegal Dude!!

  • Chris my Question:

Do you need an iPod if you own an iPhone? if yes, why so? and if no, Why do you own both of these devices?

I'm considering to switch to iPhone and I want it to play my music well! You convinced me to buy it! =)

  • Maybe speech recognition will replace it, but not entirely...

  • speech recognition has its place in the world of typing. In fact I am using speech recognition right now. Yes it is a bit clumsy to use at times. It does make mistakes from time to time. But if you do it right, there will not be any mistakes to be found. But will it replace the keyboard ever. I really do not think it ever will. There will always be a place for the keyboard. Speech recognition will never take over all the way.

  • I think speech recognition has its place, but not as a direct replacement.

  • Chris my question is...

Do you think that video calling will take over normal voice Calling?

  • Chris: I disagree. One can edit with voice. Sometimes editing with voice is even easier. For example, I can say, "Capitallize 'hi" or "Italicize 'The Seventh Seal.'" Presto, it's done. One can say, "Delete from X to Y." Or "Replace X with Y." Or "Delete 'international'", etc. At first, the idea of typing with voice seems un-intuitive, but once you've done it for a while, you get used to it. Bottom line is, eventually it'll be much quicker than typing.

  • I prefer a keyboard

  • 1) press pause

    2) hover house over red bar at the bottom of the video

    3) hold down the 3 button

    4)?????

    5)proffit

  • Speech recognition replacing the keyboard will make secretly looking at porn on the internet more complicated

  • Hope you're drinking driving juice.

  • @ProspectNY11211 Meant to say hope you're not drinking driving juice.Sorry i was drinking typing juice.

  • talking*

  • the reason why it wont is simply because not everyone can speak of speak properly. im ralking engrish or disease

  • fuck no

  • Unlikely. Direct mind control is far superior and not too far behind. If speech recognition does become mainstream, it won't be for long, and it will never completely replace keyboards.

  • Eh, I prefer typing over speaking if both were accessible to me. Especially if I want to stay quiet in my house.

  • Hold 0 for troll face ; D

  • hey whay type of car is that???

  • @estebargus83

    2010 Toyota Prius

  • @findthecomputerroom6 Valid point made!

  • Is YouTube taking the YOU of out of YOUTube?

  • Current day speech recognition has a LOT OF WORK to do if it even wants to compete with the keyboard lol. The last time i tried to use it was a year ago and it barely ever did anything i said.

  • @wolfeedarkfang Plus there is the fact late at night where i live i gotta keep my voice down. But to use speech recognition i have to use a loud voice. Not very user friendly IMO.

  • I would like too see speech recognition and something like xbox kinetic as a mouse

  • I tried Speech Recognition but Android keeps blocking cuss words.

  • NO, it will not because I use Windows 95, 98, Me, and 2000! My Windows 7 laptop can do it, but w/ bugs. :P

  • no, for the same reason we don't take notes on a tape recorder or study with voice recordings. You can't keep your business to yourself. also what chris said.

  • i dont think speech will replace keyboard because at the moment transcribing audio is not that advanced and can make mistakes, if we did replace them with the current technology there may be problems like in the military where you have to be precise with what you are saying and if the software makes a mistake and says something totally random it would not be very good.. also youtubes attempt at transcibing audio is hilarious if you switch it on

  • I tried speech recognition on my pc... quite fun but..no.. I would not use that instead of a keyboard.

What about those who can not speak? and would the software be compatible with ALL languages even different dialects. Image playing games without a keyboard..

  • Speech might replace keyboard SHORTCUTS in a lot of software. Or at least augment them. And for informal text (like twitter and facebook) where incomplete and run-on sentences don't matter. Maybe even casual emails.

On the other hand, I do hope speech will be folded into OSes more. I'd love to be able to wake up in the morning and speak to the room "any emails from my wife or friends?" and get an intelligent answer. But there's more to that than just accurate transcription of speech.

  • Unrelated, but do you think that external harddrives are trustworthy enough, for you to store your 'life' on them.

  • In the future we will probely use IBM Watson!

  • Will human mind reader will replace mouse ?

  • What about gaming?

  • @Chintendoeddman [Gamer] W A D S W D S SPACEBAR ONE SPACEBAR

  • I don't think the speech recognition software with replace with keyboard. With speech recognition, there are times where you can easily make mistakes and have it type what you didn't want to say so it still has some improvements in that area.

  • I have an accent. Speech recognition software does and and never has worked for me.

An quite honestly I think the keyboard is the greatest input device ever created.

  • QUESTION FOR LOCKERGNOME:

What problems do you see that will arise from peoples disregard for privacy, not only theirs, but others as well, ie: twitter, facebook, etc, along with apparent lack of caring about their online security and digital footprint?

  • problary not for pc or atleast not replacing for the pc afterall i as a gamer would be kinda pissed if i had to say jump left right run duck shoot and all that stuff while playing a game so certainly not replacing it. whereas the "telekinectic" technology that is being researched whereby you get a chip which reads the electronic impulses sent in order to make out what you want to say/ do

  • I think it will become the easier solution for things like typing essays or reading out something to be copied down to the computer. But I dare you to try playing anything other than an RTS with speech recognition, or try to code something by speaking, it just won't happen. And speech will never replace a keyboard for editing text, it would just be too hard.

  • It's just a matter of time for the keyboard to die!

  • Not replace, but it will be half and half. Sometimes it's not convenient to talk if you are on a public place and sometimes you are doing something else and can't type.

  • Replace? no, as an option along with a keyboard, sure.

Even if it was perfect there are many times you cannot or do not wish to talk to your computer.

  • i don't think it will ever replace keys .. you'll always need keys to input some stuff you can't say, maybe you can spell

  • Nah. I hope not. Could possibly be optional though.

  • sometimes, when i speak i type the letters on the keyboard in my head

  • Do you feel Kinect (non-touch) like controls will take off? or do you feel we have to wait until iron man technology is around before it will really take off?
