when you think of all the people who have died for the colour of their skin, their religion, or their politics. you wonder if it will ever end. thank the gods that south africa finally saw that what they were doing was wrong. now lets see if the rest of the world will follow suit.
A high school friend of mine was lucky enough to see this tour at a smallish theatre in Berkeley, CA ni 80-81 time frame. Gabriel was just feet away from him when singing this song and was crying.
I was only twelve years old when I went to the Wembley concert. Well aware of the situation in SA at the time, out of the many outstanding performances on the day, this is the one that stays with me still.
Where is Gabriel's song about the quasi-state that still practices Apartheid? Apartheid South Africa's ally: Israel! US tax dollars actually flow to this anachronistic terror state! Apartheid South Africa was not bad at all compared to Israel - did you know that Apartheid South Africa shared something with the US? Yes, and ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION problem - guess all that BS about the poor ol' Blacks was a little overstated. Meanwhile Israel gets away with ethnic cleansing and murder.
@ScottfromTexas Moron. It is the Arabs that practice aparthied not Israel. Where is multiculturalism in the arab world? Why are Christians killed in Eqypt, why are no other religions allowed in Saudi Arabia? Israel is the most pluralistic country in the middle east.
this is an amazing song, and it tells a story worth being told over and over again....I too remember this concert, and I too taped it....I was 23 at the time.
When this concert was held, I was a very sheltered kid in Jo'burg. I was so ignorant of what was happening in SA - I knew the government was fighting 'terrorists' in South West Africa but that was about it. It would've blown my to mind to have known that so many people around the world were opposed to SA.
I still know what I did that day I was twenty years old, the concert was broadcasted on radio, and I recorded all the stuff on cassette, now I'm fortytwo and I still think that Peter Gabriel belongs to the greatest personalities in music we have, apartheid is gone but millions of people in south africa live in poorest conditions apart from the football crap, Peter you're great!!!!!

I was at this concert... at the time I was 17yrs old and Gabriel was 38. Now I'm 38, which is worrying as I don't look nearly as good as he does here!
wat een geweldige boodschap hadden deze muziekanten in die tijd ...... en ja het heeft de regeringen onder druk gezet , de MACHT is aan het volk!!! heerlijk om dit weer eens terug te zien .....
Jim Kerr ( Simple Minds ) who introduced Peter Gabriel on stage, is a massive early Genesis fan. He attended the Foxtrot tour of 1972 in Glasgow. Gabriel remains one of Kerr's biggest heroes.
Because of Peter Gabriel's vocal support of those who aren't able stand up for themselves and his support for Amnesty International that got me involved in letter writing for Amnesty - something which I have done for more than 20 years now. I'm sure his passion has encouraged others like me to get involved. He's not just a "white artist jumping on the cause bandwagon". He truly believes what he preaches and puts his money and reputation where his mouth is. I have the utmost respect for him.
THIS MY FRIENDS IS WHAT A TRUE TRUE HUMAN BeING IS LIKE, GOD BLESS AND LOVE FOREVER PETEr, PEACE AND LOVE TO THE WORLD, HATE WILL NEVER DEFEAT LOVE OR COMPASSION YOUR FRIEND jimy
actually the bagpipes was the part of simple minds who were the musicians for gabriel on this day as well when they covered it on street fighting years ! very celtic
I was at Wembley and Harare to see Peter sign BIKO. fantastic. He is our hero for helping us destroy apartheid. Spreading the word, helping to get Manadela out of Jail. Peter, whatever you have done in your life, this single act makes your life, a life well lived. We love you for that. Fan forever. Walter - born into apartheid, you helped us destroy it.
Israel is a apartheid state, a racist zionist state that treats Palestinians even worse than how the whites treated blacks in S.A. in the 1970's and 1980's according to Nelson Mandella and Arch Bishop Desmond Tuto.
I remember hearing this song on the radio when I was young back in the 1980s.
Never knew what it was about but I loved the tune. When I was in my early teens around 1992-93, I found out what the song was really about and I was amazed at the powerful tune and how music could bring out such powerful messages.
always got to say most bias, its always the eastern hemesphere, have you ever centered on oh i would say the western hemesphere, ? native americans have been run down since the world knew we existed, should have let us be man, what do you call us savages, who are the real parasites,savages?....
Peter could not have had a better band to back him up on this song. Interestingly enough, when the Simple Minds first got their start, Peter Gabriel enjoyed their music and ask them to be his opening act for a concert tour. Thank you for sharing this wonderful video. And thank God that officially Apartheid and its perversions are now behind us in S.A., though the deep rooted hatred of mankind can never be erased.

LOL i cannot believe some of the comments here, this concert was to basically in the end help free Nelson Mandela, it was a concert for the hopes of millions of south Africans who for many years had suffered persecution at the hands of des-pots. Peter Gabriel and amnesty international and others were fundamental in their fight for justice for all people, not just white people.
