  • This music reminded me why i always listened to the stereo while playing games.

  • Didn't they MSX cartridge have a special sound chip in there, like the Konami games ? Full FM synthesiser effects beckon ?

  • I love msx still, despite it's limitations, they made really good games for this computer. But Salamander and Nemesis are way better than R-type..

  • the sound is terrible. I suggest the TG16 version for closest to arcade conversion. the next would be the Sega master system then gameboy. other versions of this game other then the arcade were trash.

  • The authors should decide - music in game or effects. Together they collide because there are not enough channels to play both.

  • @UltimateTr0ll You're wrong. Amiga and C=64 also have pretty decent conversions.

  • @Airiin14

C64 rtype has no sound effects. That alone makes it completely worthless.

  • @Arkhandroid What?? I don't know what version you have played or with which port you're mistaking it, but of course it has sound effects.

  • @Airiin14 Allow me to rephrase since you missed the sarcasm and disdain of my post:

The sound effects suck so bad and were neglected to the point where the SID's music drowns them out and you barely hear anything except little clickypops and nonsense, as opposed to all of the good versions of the game in which the sound effects and music blend nicely.

    IE: R-Type on PC Engine.

PS: Don't PM me on YouTube to say "BETTER RESEARCH BEFORE YOU POST, MY FRIEND".

  • @Arkhandroid They suck - it's true. But they are present in the game. You wrote that port has no sound effects at all, which wasn't true. Somebody in the internet was wrong, so I was obliged to clear it. That's all, my friend.

  • @Airiin14 "in" the internet? ,man I wish I was in it instead of ON it.

But, if you think those cracklyblips actually count as sfx, I feel sorry for you. I also feel sorry for you for feeling obligated to correct the internets

AFAIGAF, there are no sound effects in the game. Just very loud SID music that occasionally has weird static percussion. If the C64 is all OMG SUPERIOR because of the SID, how come the sfx+music blend was totally screwed up?

and were not friends so stop calling me one

  • @Arkhandroid Yeah, making fun of one's english is definitely a good argument in discussion. Besides, where did I wrote it was superior? I just wrote it is decent. The game is playable and that's what counts the most, my friend.

  • i need to install 2x GTX295 to be able to run this game at reslution of 1280x1024 with 10 fps tops

  • You need to learn more about Computer history and hardware to say something about this computer.

The hardware are very limited but can do amazing thing if you are a good programmer or hardware fan.

  • you need to learn when people are joking on things

  • Yeah!, and more English :)

    msx audio at its finest

  • Don't like the scrolling in the MSX version

  • 4 bit??

  • No such thing.

  • is this video taken from the msx1 or msx2 version?

  • MSX2. It was one of the first R-Type conversions. Bad scrolling, nice graphics, sound is OK and programming is good. Played it too much. 8-bit.

  • This is MSX1.

  • worse scrolling than the spectrum version, but at least the enemies don't constantly flicker on and of like the master system version, overall i think it's pretty good though

  • Makes me appreciate the Master System version a whole lot more!

  • Looks way better than the Speccy version.

  • maybe graphics is better in this version than speccy, howe3ver this version SUCKS, it runs so sluggishly and the scrolling is so sucky that's unbelivable

spectrum version is very good, just c64 guys who cannot cope with colour attribute limited graphics says it sucks

  • looks like an msx1 game to me... ¬_¬

  • Looks horrible. And the sound is damn annoying.

  • I had this one when I was a kid.

R-type for MSX1... Who could imagine Irem did such a reckless challenge at that time.

    Thanks for uploading.

  • I had this ROM in those days. However, I was not able to defeat the first boss. I watch this video and try to challenge it because I understood a way. Thank you very much for a great video.

  • I seem to notice that the POW Armor placement is different in this version as well. I have the TurboGrafx version (on Virtual Console) and it is hard as HELL to beat. Only reached Level 2 then got killed by one of those spidery things from behind. Gah...

  • ChangeV, the cart supports MSX2 but it doesn't act much different on an MSX2, prolly a few colour palette differences is all. Many MSX games are like that.

  • It's easy because of the choppy scrolling!
