If he is alive, he probably faked his death to be left alone. He has had lots of trouble in his life and as Dave Dave said, it all started with his father. If he is still alive, I think he just wanted to end his carreer with a bang to refocus his attention on other parts of his life. Maybe he is pursuing some love interest or trying to create a more "normal" life for himself outside the media spotlight and out of his fathers reach?
