My violin teacher told me I needed to lift my left arm under the violin and have my left elbow across my chest so I could reach the strings better. I find this very uncomfortable and impossible. What would you say about left arm position?
i've been playing off and on for about 15 years. (practice for a few weeks, don't play for 6 months, that kind of thing.) i naturally move like this when i play standing up in front of people. after watching this video i feel like i actually know what i'm doing!! i've done something right!! horray for me! i'll be watching all of your other videos after this. thanks for posting.
Professor, do you have DVD on these techniques in CD stores? My kid just started learning violin for 1/2 year (he's 6 years old) and I think it'll be a few years before he can understand these videos.
Hi ProfessorV, Well, I have to say your playing is something!! My cats usually leave pronto when I play but even when you were playing off key my baby stayed. He was looking at me but he stayed!! Go figure! lolragdollmommy
Professor V, I practise without me violin and pretend holding my bow and violin. I rock and breadth deeply as well. I feel
like I am dancing Viennese Waltz. very relax with the breadth. I also feel i have to pay you too. I try to watch one a day too. what's the most recent lesson #? I want to make sure I have not miss any. thks
Very helpful--I'm an adult student (multi-instrument:about 30 mos, some 40 years).
I 'truly' look forward to working with this.
Your reply concerning relaxation v. fast bowing was almost another lesson.. Thanks a lot.
I took a masterclass to help with this awhile back and, you've helped me. Without whining, articulation and balance have been very troublesome for me.
great video, I have some questions about the technique though: my teacher taught me to use wrist to cross strings when play fast, is it considered cheating and bad for the development?
my other question is about swing while playing. I think moving around while playing is natural. However, my teacher don't like the idea of practicing with body movement. I am kinda confused here.
xiaoleideng, try watching the video "Ben Chan - String crossing trick" for a great example of arm movement while string crossing. As for movement; if I am playing anything fast, I put my weight over the left foot and stand still. This video is more about relaxation. Too much of this makes an audience dizzy! TE
wow,it feels like i opened premium account on youtube :D thanks alot,
i did buy violin on my birthday and didnt get teacher, but here i got your videos.....so hiii sir, thanks alot :)

I find I do this naturally when I've had a couple glasses of wine. I also think my playing improves but maybe that's the wine :)

its just that there are different teachers
and they recommend different techniques
its up to you to judge which is better at certain situation it doesn't mean that they are wrong.
well for your teacher i think he just want to emphasize formality
and for the wrist i find it useful when playing fast especialy the A-G-A-G-F#... part of canon
i think it depends on the passage of the piece that you are playing if your whole arm can keep up with the speed then go for it.
i think its all about options
