troglodyto yes lip syncing was the norm back then. They would "simulcast" the sound on FM radio precisely for the better sound quality than tv audio. Thing is tv audio until HD has been the same principle as FM. It probably wasn't bad on big console sets with 15" subs and 100 watts or more of audio power. But on the average tv with a single small speaker and a couple of watts it was mediocre. It was in the late 70's/early 80's that tv audio made a sea change in sound quality along with stereo.

They're not "performing", they're lip-syncing to the original recording. There's no electric piano player visible, though it's a prominent part of the song, and somehow that guy gets acoustic rhythm and electric solo sounds out of that longhorn guitar at the same time. I have always loved this song and this group but wow come to think of it they really look somewhat shorter, just notice how big the guitars are compared to them. This friend of mine has a dad who came from Russia and is the same age as these guys, born in the 40's. I guess nutrition was not as good in Europe and Russia following WWII so people born around that time in war torn areas like Europe and Russia did not grow enough earlier on. My friend's dad had the same problem because of the war.
