wink is such a tacky host..he says at the end...thank yo Pete for being the BEST opponent we've seen for our champion...that basically is saying ..all those who came before were losers..
I seem to recall that Thom McKee gave Ken Jennings a standing invitation to join him at his home in Maryland(?) for a night of Trivial Pursuit. I wonder if they've had that game yet. If not, I'd sure like to be the fly on the wall for that one.
This match was great. It's not often that we have two opponents who really go at it for long periods of time. People say the red catagories were bad since they gave too many bonuses away; one red catagory was enough & that was what mae this game great. If it hadan't been for the secret catagory we would not have this famous moment in TTD history. Pete was very gracious bout his loss & Thom continued his winning streak. Wonderful match I wish we could have it every game.
Thom McKee and Ken Jennigs are 2 AWESOME Contestants.
and Ken Jennings maybe the Highest Winner in all of Television Game Shows, but Thom McKee will forever be the 1st EVER Undisputed King of Television Game Shows.
According from numerous sources, the "Secret Category" (one of those darn red ones), plus the accumulating pot, a feature from the original 1950's "rigged" TTD.
Mine too. I came on at 7:00 pm on WPVI-TV in Philadelphia, right after ABC News and the PA Lottery drawing. The Joker's Wild came on at 7:30, and in 1986, TTD (with "Red Category" Caldwell) went to CBS at 10:00 am and TJW was replaced with Wheel of Fortune, with Jeopardy! coming on at 7:00.
No, it was "AM Philadelphia," a local morning talk show with Wally Kennedy (now an anchor on KYW-AM) and Liz Kepner. This was in the days when WPVI was owned by Capitol Cities prior to the Capitol Cities/ABC merger. "Donahue" came on at 10:00 AM and "Action News" followed at Noon. TTD and TJW were on at the 7:00-8:00 hour, now occupied by Jeopardy! (7:00 p.m.) and WOF (7:30 p.m.).
Nope! I rememeber watching this show on WOR-TV (channel 9) in New York City back in the 80's and again on CBN back in the mid-80's where they used to carry the game show block. CBN was a cable channel for its time long before it became ABC Family.
@HomeoftheGoodGuys It was on the USA Network too before everything changed in the mid-1990s. You know already what became of the network, right? NBC Universal, Monk, Law & Order: SVU, Burn Notice, and Psych ring any bells?
@tyrese3745 What sucked was USA only showed a limited part of the run, from 1982 to 1985, then back to 1982. All you saw of Thom on the USA reruns was the 1983 tournament.
Now THIS is what I call COMPETITION and a CLASSIC Game

Thom McKee was the first player who actually knew everything when he left with $312,700.

One correct answer from the Secret Category and the pot automatically doubles.
