I got a letter from HTV once and the back was filled up with the logo written backwards. When I held it up to a mirror to see it properly, I realized my mirror looked like a tv screen, made of glass too. Very clever graphics.
I always have fond memories of HTV because I used to go on holiday in North Wales as a child in the 70's. I wasn't at all happy when the "TV Aerial" and logo got ditched in the 80's.
Anyway, brilliant as ever Applemask. Please keep making these great documentaries.
A slight error, the 2nd version of the 1993 'glass' ident you use was the HTV West variant used before their news broadcast, used only by HTV West, and only before their local news. There was a re-vamped version of the jingle, which was known (in our house at least) as 'the ice cream van' jingle!! Excellent stuff though, keep up the great work.
HTV Wales and West both had their own continuity, presumably produced at their own studios in cardiff and Bristol respectively.
My memory of pre-S4C is fuzzy, but I believe the contnuity announcers used to annoucne in English or Welsh, depending on the language of the following programme.
You got it slightly wrong when you talk about Carlton taking over HTV, it was first taken over by United News and Media who owned Meridian and Anglia at the time. When Granada bought UNM they had to sell one of the franchises and sold HTV to Carlton. At this point there were strange Carlton/Generic ITV hybrid idents.
You're already handling boring facts as it stands, might as well be accurate instead of jumping directly to Carlton-bashing as is the usual time-honoured way.

@TVnut15 I skipped over UNM straight to Granada for expediency's sake, but the latter part I didn't know about.

Wouldve been interesteing to hear your view on the Carltonised version of the HTV idents.

I think the 1993 music sounds like the attack of the microphones!

3:04 - it looks like it's made with processed cheese pieces. The arial was much better.

Brilliant, as always! You get the balance just right. 10 out of 10! Keep it up.

No mention of what the continuity was like did HTV Wales have a different continuity to West or did they mix Welsh presenters and English
steveh31no2 2 years ago
I expect they had some Welsh-language continuity, but I don't have access to any footage from pre-S4C.

Loved the references to Brian Eno and Tescos own-brand packaging in this one

I don't think I could have made all that entertaining to hear about, so I just skipped to the end.
