Athena Asamiya is the first school girl of fighting games not Sakura. Sakura Kasugano appeared for the first time in 1996. Athena Asamiya appeared for the first time in 1987. She came out way before Sakura. Also, Athena has her own unique moveset where as Sakura was generally a Ryu knock off character that Capcom needed to add more female characters.

I loved Street Fighter Alpha 3 and its characters. However, at that time, I think Capcom started overdoing it *way too much* with the "sailor-moon/maid cafe-esque" girl characters (Indrig, Karin, R. Mika,Maki, Sakura) trying to appeal too much to Japanese "Otaku". Don't get me wrong, I think these characters are great additions to the Street Fighter stable/canon. But I would prefer to see more woman characters like Chun Li,Cammy,Rose,Crimson Viper,etc. for the SF franchise down the road...
