  • do you think that this dslr would be better than a up to date entry level,

  • @123drue that was the entry level back then, camera are way smaller now.

  • Nikon is suppose to be pronounced as nee-kon. not nye-kon.

  • @MrBladez9 I have already pronounced NIKON as Nye-kon NOT nee-kon which is the United Kingdom's Pronouciation, I sorry but the U.K. pronouciation sounds like Mrs. Nikeeee like Snickers Chocolate Bar. It is NOT a Nike Sports shows or Sweater or Jym Trouser of Nike. The is a True Genuine Instrument Pro-DSLR & FULLY Pronounced "Nye-KON" not Nike-Neekon which is only the U.K.Nike Sports Brandname!!!!

  • @MrBladez9 I have already pronounced NIKON as Nye-kon NOT nee-kon which is the United Kingdom's Pronounciation, I sorry but the U.K. pronouciation sounds like Mrs. Nikeeee like Snickers Chocolate Bar. It is NOT a Nike Sports shows or Sweater or Jym Trouser of Nike in North America. The is a True Genuine Instrument Pro-DSLR & FULLY Pronounced "Nye-KON" not Nike-Neekon which is only the U.K.Nike Sports Brandname!!!!

  • @Jules7892 u pronounced 'nye-kon' in U.K pronounciation but 'nye-kon' is made from japan. pronounce it 'nee-kon' as it was made in japan.

  • have you seen the sony nex-5its pretty cool

I hate how people that dont know anything about cameras think that the slr's are cheep just cuz ther big you know?

  • They're actually called Digital SLRs because they have a Single Lens Reflex system. Not because you can change a lens, that's called having an interchangeable lens - like the new Micro 4/3 systems that are now out.

  • thanks for the video!

  • that was very informative! if i wanted to take a macro pic on a SLR...would i need a different lens? or can i just change the setting to Macro?

  • @ammaretto You can use any lens for macro, but lenses made for macro allow you to focus closer.

  • so much has changed in 3 years but that slr is still great

  • hey man can you tell me please what lens you have on the D80. Thanks

  • @frak6666 nikon 12-24

  • A little more research is required. A digital single lens reflex or DSLR isn't called a single lens reflex because it's ability to interchange lenses. It's called an SLR because of the mirror inside the camera to support it's TTL viewfinder.

  • What about some of the other fundamental differences, like the through-the-lens viewfinder and phase detection auto focus on the SLR? These things alone make it worth the switch imo.

  • What about Preference between Panasonic Lumix Lx-3 or Nikon Slr?

In Price and Long term usage?

  • @Specialforce1942 nikon all the way

  • @Specialforce1942 PANASONIC Viera, for which you are communicating with a Viera-PANASONIC,is the MOST Exquisite in 3CMOS Pro-Manual-Iris-Shutter Speed-Manual White Balance Professional Video Cameras in the 1920x1080progressive Recording Video SDHC & SDXC,32Gigabyte,& SDXC 64Gigabyte TRUE Professional Video Cameras.Sony isanother. But in PANASONIC Lumix,There NO Pro-DSLR made by Panasonic, the Closet Panasonic Lumix Comes is in the Intermediate Manual Digital Cameras 30x Zoom!CMOS,NO RAW!Fixed Lens

  • @Jules7892 Proper Expert English Linguistics"NIKON".Since a FULL "O Vowel" is followed after the "K".IT makes and forces the "I" to become a hard "I" NOT a soft "I". Basic Elementary School Grammer in English, forces the "I" in NIKON to become a HARD "I" therefore forcing its TRUE English Interpretation to be Pronounced "NYEKON" NOT Neekon.Although, yes the Parts are Made in JAPAN,NIKONs are"ALL Assembled at NIKON Assembly Plant in Malaysia",So"NYEKON" Not a "Neekon".It is NOT a Snickers Neekon!!

  • What about ur preference between Panasonic Lumix LX-3 or Nikon Slr?

  • "dslr" doesn't mean that the camera uses an interchangeable lens (fyi, there are also fixed-lens dslr's). The "d" stands for digital, and "slr" stands for single lens reflex, which deals with how light is manipulated within the camera.

  • i have had a point and shoot camera with 6x zoom it was nice. now i have a dslr with an 18-55mm lens that came with the kit.. anyway i want to be able to zoom in to distant things say 30x zoom in point and shoot terms. mine is a sony slr. how much will i have to spend on a lens to do that . also what lens how big and so on . really it is birds i like to get pics of . birds that are often far off up in tree or something and i dont want to use a tripod

  • i remember i was arguing with someone... they claim they can take JUST as good as photos with a point and shoot as my D5000 they said photography is simple and pictures are pictures. i love my SLR

  • @1994toyotasupra what a noob.lol

  • @dsmrocker i am a noob ive only been into photography for about 1 and a half months =D

  • @1994toyotasupra i wasn't calling you a noob. lol i was calling the person who said the point and shoots take just as good pictures. lol i'm a noob too. lol i've been shooting since xmas of 09.lol

  • @dsmrocker ohh , yeah he annoys the shit about it to me. hes like why buy that expensive of a camera is just stupid and i say ( mhm what ever you say cuz your right over anyone ) hes like one of those ignorant people

  • Compact cameras are also point-and-shoot

  • @xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx875 by point and shoot you mean like at the time you click? or you have to wait 2 or x sec so the lens and flash work and them you have the pic? thats what i hate about digital cameras when i want a pic of a specific moven it take years to capture and when it does the moment is gone.

  • y wood u compap them like u no the slr are better what ever nvm

  • okay this may not pertain to this topic but.. I've been thinking of getting into film photography and buying a nikon fm 10. I have no clue what film photography is or its importance besides it using a film. how do you upload (if there is a way) film photographs on your computer. say if i wanted to upload so i can put it on on my myspace/facebook.? thanks.

  • @megacuh you would have to get he film scanned. you can do this at a film store.

  • I had a compact camera for a few years, and did loads of photography, so I decided that I'd do some research into SLR cameras, and decided to go with a sony a200, and the second I switched it on and took a shot, I think I fell in love with it, the picture quality, combined with the ability to get beautifully blurred backgrounds, and also the feel and weight of it, I rarely even touch my old P+S, now except for parties etc...

great review, I think you got it spot on :)

  • what's ur preference... nikon or canon slr?

  • Nikon

  • @lockness89 nikon

  • this is much better than krypton films

  • is it true it is easier to take good pictures with DSLR then a digital camera if you know how to use both?

  • yes.... better depth of field, able to perform extremely well in low light-depending on your lens, and focus is faster and can catch many subjects with great quality.

  • cool, thanks!

  • Oh well, actually i think reflex cameras are called reflex because they have an internal mirror system that allows you to look at what the camera will take as a picture when you shoot. interchangeable lenses are just another feature. in fact, there are other non-dslr cameras that can interchange lenses!

  • Very nicely explained. Nice one!

  • guys if you never used a camera you should start with a compact.

practice with it,take thousands of shots and if you think you've become really talented at photographing and you want to take more professional photos then upgrade to slr.

you see people are taking driving lessons with (for example) an everyday Toyota and not with a Dodge Viper.

    you know what I mean?

  • let's make it short SLR-s and a compact camera aren't comparable

  • hate to be stupid... what's the meaning of SLR?

  • single lens reflex

  • Oh thanks! by the way keep up in posting informative videos Goodluck

  • your video is very informative.

thanks alot. i always wanted a "professional looking camera" but i dont know where to start nor did i know what to call it.

    i have a question though,

if you were to buy a digital SLR, with all its manual features would u need to take a photography class to use it? are they complex to understand and use?

i dont want to buy something that i'm not going to use to its full extend.

  • AHAHAHAHAH, you're funny.

I started with a D40, and no.. trust me, you don't need a friggen' class to use it..read the manuel.

  • im an art person but i have alumix tz5. when i can afford i wil get an slr but it might be a while. . . the tz5 works fine

  • that 'compact' camera was HUGE.

  • dslr expensive big heavy can not take video !

    compact is way to go

  • dslrs can take HD video now.

  • you mean nikon d90?

    limited only 5 minutes

    and the quality not good

canon mark lates model is crazy 1080p real hd video record

but its a lot of cash

  • in my opinion, the d90's video isn't as bad as everyone says. the d90 itself is a great camera, and it's a bonus that it can record hd video as well..so it's convenient!

  • If you want to shoot video take a camcorder! DSLR's are photographs ;)

  • yes thats what Im saying dslrs are for foto shooting which means dont have video recording... that many people including me need that badly.. i upload videos on youtube and a cheap compact camera video recording makes my day

anyway my point is dslrs are too much expensive although price drop

just for 3 frame a second and little better noise reduction I dont wanna spend extra 1000$

    cheers

  • just for 3 frmaes a second and noise reduction? lol u must read a lot more about dslr cameras. well yes they are heavier but i will say the disadvantage is more the fact that it isnt too secure to walk around with it

  • dude I have canon full frame

yes the picture quality much better but

dslr very very expensive also you neeed very good lens

    flash and so on

it will cost like 5000$ total maybe more

if you can sacrifice the big image size and some quality you can have same results when there is enough light

    just for 400$

    so thats my point

for the money its not worth to buy dslr

    anyway

  • I am about to buy a d40, i know that it does not have a built in motor, but i am ok with that because i would rather buy a d40 and have money left for extra batteries and cases and stuff, which brings me to two questions i have for you because you own so many of these. 1) is the Nikon d40 have a good battery life? 2) although it is not a d60 or d80, does the d40 still maintain the picture quality to capture sunsets and edit them with software and stuff?

  • the nikon d40 has plenty of quality, just less mega pixels. Also I do not own all the cameras I review. I only own the d300. I know about other cameras because I either borrow them or use them in a store. The battery life of the d40 is great.

  • ok thanks. im still going to want some extra batteries, im gonna order generics off of ebay. they are still lithiom ion and should hold a good charge.

  • WOW. What type of lenses is that ?

  • nikon 18-200mm

  • interesting, i have the successors of the two cameras, G9 and D90, but never made a comparison between the two.

  • They are NOT called SLR's because they have interchangeble lenses ! .... Single Lens Reflex simply implies that it uses one set of optic that give both the user view AND the image on the film plane .... its nothing to do with lens changeability ..GET IT RIGHT ! ;-D

  • I think there is a bigger difference between a DSLR and a digi compact than a film SLR and a quality film compact, due to the digi compacts tiny sensors.

  • Nicely done. You speak well and clearly and know the subject well.

One point I'd add, is that when making enlargements, one often crops to part of the image. In such cases the larger sensor's quality will become evident even at smaller print sizes.

    Also, I'm skeptical about 11 x 14s made with the G7 vs the D80. But, maybe you're right - I'm just guessing.

  • SHow us the F100

  • I didnt have it when making this review

  • Thanks for the overview... It really enlightens me but I am still undecided if I will get the SLR or the compact cam coz I really wanted the best but the only thing is the size of the DSLR turns me off, so huge and bulky.

  • @edpannewyork

take a look at the Sigma DP1 or the DP2 compact cameras.

  • it's telephoto... not "Telepho"

  • good video .. too bad u're just another nikon loyalist

  • yea... have some diversity! i personally like canon.. haha..

  • I'm laughing at 8:54. Great video. Explains a lot.

  • ;4:48 when u started the d80 up did u shoot 2 pictures?

  • I'm pretty sure he took just 1.

  • Comment removed

  • One thing I think that you left out is that an SLR is a single reflex lens, this is where a miror covers the sensor and when you take the picture it folds down and hits the sensor and goes up. Compared to a compact camera uses a combination 1s and 0s that tell what colors go where and when you take a picture it freezes that code of 1s and 0s and gives you a picture. Another thing is that the smaller filter gives you more compression in jpeg format than a dslr... Just though I'd let ya know....

  • I know I forgot to mention that in the video.

  • i agree, u can read this stuff on their websites lol, or just in the info when u buy it online.

    i love how its not just a normal compact camera . . . . its an " advanced " compact camera ; P

  • jcwhatcounts20 but the new nikon p90 with an amazing 26-624mm lens (24x) so ppl who cant afford dslrs should in my opinion, get that good video

  • i have the g7 and personally think having the big lens option make you think you might as well be using an SLR anyway

  • what kind of case should you use for a compact that allow you to easily tuck the neck strap into the bag. THose little belt camera pouches are to small for this

  • for the g7 I am not really sure

  • great video

  • I think you were wrong when you said the G7 is an all plastic body. It has a metal alloy body (possibly magnesium) but there are parts that are plastic.

    Good comparison though.

  • good review man...

  • good video

One of the most important reasons for me buying a dslr was, because of the larger sensor, you also have a better control over depth of filed because the depth of field of a point&shoot is just ridicoulously huge and I'm a bokeh fan

  • bokeh is great!

go to my profile and go to the flickr link. i hav some good ones up there!

  • question i wanna ask you because it seems to me u know ur stuff quite well. Lets say i take a pic wit a compact digital camara and it has 10mp and then i take a pic wit lets say a d60 wit 10mp as well, which photo is gonna look better and why? thats what i cant quite understand with the photo quality wise. id really appreciate if u can answer that

  • An slr will be better because it has a sensor that is many times larger than a compact cameras sensor. The large sensor allows each pixel to absorb more light producing pictures with less noise and much better color accuracy.

  • ohh ok so the slr will give a much softer crisper pic right?

  • sure

  • i just got my d60 today, you should make a vid like how to use shutter speed and aperture in like different enviorments. ur shooting pics in a thunderstorm helped alot.

  • im getting a P80. do u think thats a better camera to get in the price range of a 300 and under price?

  • yes

  • ok thanks. keep reveiwing ill keep using as i improve my cams :)

  • i would go for a d40 more than the p80. Close to the same price and better image quality, being a dslr.

  • recomend induro or gitzo? I´ve red some tests and induro was at first place with 77 points and manfrotto and gitzo 66/63..I´am not sure which to buy...

    - induro was far away more stabil at difrent surface that other tripod including gitzo and manfrotto

  • I sure induro is fine

  • what do yout think of induro tripod? induro c214?

  • those tripods are nice, they are like a third party brand for tripods.

  • i buy D80 w/ 18 to 200 mm

  • yea the great Headless camera reviewer boy!

  • Hey can you make a review on what is in your camera bag.

    Please

  • qcon, an inrelevant question, which tripod do you use? and which bag, for d300, with all weather cover is good?

  • gitzo tripod and a tamrac velocity pack

  • I am so getting the D80

  • Why ?

    The D90 just came out.

  • Because the D80 is a lot cheaper and you get most of the basics. The D90 does have a better (CMOS) sensor than the D80, more megapixels, larger (and more pixel density) LCD, and a video mode among other things. But for an extra 300-400 dollars, it's up to the individual whether or not it's worth it.

  • once you're over 6 or so MP, there isn't any noticeable difference. i just bought a d80. i was torn between the d80 and the d90, but for me the sensor and the lcd weren't enough to justify the extra money. with the money i saved i was able to get an sb-600 and a 55-200 vr

  • Why did you reply to me

  • where is your head?

  • he has no head. HAHA. but, he talk using his mouth. his mouth is on his face. but, where is his face? :D

  • Very nice comparison...will help a lot.

    I'm going from a Sony H9 (messy cam) to a Nikon D90...

  • i have the G9 and i have the tele-converter

  • wats the lens on that D80?

  • nikon 18-200mm

  • am i able to use that lens on my D40? i know about how the D40 can only use some auto focus lens and the the older one have to be manually focused.

  • yes you can use that lens

  • vr?

  • yes

  • very nice info!!

  • That was great. Very informative.

  • Hey, good evening! I just bought a D80 this week...my first DSLR!! Proud Pappa...I love this baby, man! I got the 18-135mm and they threw in a 'free' Quantaray 55-200mm lens. So, how good, in your opinion, is that 70-300mm vr lens? I totally want that, but it'll be awhile. Gotta get a speedlite first...the SB800. What do you think?

  • what is that screw on black weird shape lense adapter that is on the d80?? like what does it doo ??

  • are you talking about the hood or the filter

  • :| noob its a flower pedal hood

  • Noob its 'petal'..

  • Noob im not a noob cuz that was a typo noob :P

and that was 3 months ago,,,,,,,, why are you replying to old posts?

  • Question is y not?

  • what is that screw on black weird shape lense adapter that is on the d80?? like what does it doo ??

  • it keeps off glare from anything too bright.

  • i dunno what to get out of the d40 and d40x (or maybe D80?), with the d40x being more expensive, i might go for the d40 but is the d40x better in different ways than more mega pixels? its my first DSLR and the top of my budget is about £375 (maybe could stretch to £400!). Could you help me with a reply? and also what about lenses and other stuff to go with it? any reccomendations?

    Thanks very much

  • go with the d40, its a great price. less than some compact cameras. for lenses i suggest you get the nikon 18-70mm and 70-300mm vr. if that is too much than get the nikon d40 with the nikon 18-55mm and 55-200mm vr.

  • Thanks alot. I think im gonna go with the D40

  • Okay, great video, you seem to know a lot about slrs. Now I've finally decided on the Nikon d80, so what lense is better,

the nikor 18-70mm or the 18-135mm?

  • I would get the 18-70mm. If you get that one then i would also get the 70-300mm vr lens.

  • Thanks, that's what I thought. Doesn't the 18-135 really get too flaky at it's maximum focal length?

  • yes. the 18-70mm is a better performer

  • put the slr up against a nikon P5100

  • why is he pronouncing nikon like ney-con is not call ney-con is call nikon as nee-kon is not that hard. americans do that with iraq they say hi-riq lol i find americans abit funny lol

  • i was wondering why he was saying it weird...

  • Its pronounced Nick-on, you moron!

  • LOL EYE-RAQ, george dubya bush!!

    americans....

  • technically speaking Nikon is spelled with an i non an e its not neekon its nykon you can tell by the way its spelled

  • its just what part of the world you come from, here in the uk its either:

    *nick on* or *ny con*

anyways nice vid connor :) i watched all of them.

  • its just what part of the world you come from, here in the uk its either:

    *nick on* or *ny con*

anyways nice vid connor :) i watched all of them.

  • Nikon SLR vs Compact cameras

Its a Digital SLR.. Huge difference Dude!!

  • F.Y.I. SLR = Single Lens Reflex... you see through the lens.

  • The video is great. You just forgot one thing. To mention that size of sensor inflicts with DOF. With SLR cameras is easy to get shallow DOF...but with compact or p&s that is just difficult...

  • wow thanks cleared up allot of questions

  • Would be great to see the comparison of a phone cameras sensor compared to a compact and a SLR sensor is there any good sites I could get this information from?

  • No one will do that. It's just stupid. SLR camera's are for serious use...and cameras in phones are just for play...be serious...

  • You get serious. I said compact camera's and phone camera's. The latest camera phones have had great reveiws and in daylight conditions can match consumer compact for image quality. The compact camera market is becoming saturated and most people don't understand sensor size and how more mega-pixels create more noise especially on smaller sensors. So piss off you gimp.

  • "comparison of a phone cameras sensor compared to a compact and a SLR sensor"-- do you even know what you said? and by the way that is just sensor...why is that so important on camera...i mean it inflict directly on quality of picture but that is not the first and the last thing on camera...

...and forget phone camera's, they are just for kids...or imagined photographers...

    ...be well!

  • if you look to what i put before that I said ''Great review brilliantly explained would be great to see a comparison of a compact camera and a phone camera'' Pixel size is not important but most people believe that having more pixels give you a better picture. Phone cameras are for kids so are compact cameras so your point is?

  • The smaller the camera the more noise you get especially if that camera dosent have a view finder most camera phones and point and shoot have lcd screens now sow in poor lighing and even in good lighting your sill going to get an un Godly amount of color and luminat noise where as an slr you get very little luminant noise and no color noise

  • Great review brilliantly explained would be great to see a comparison of a compact camera and a phone camera.

  • that is a great range and both of those lenses are great. the only other lens you might need is an ultra wide angle if your into landscape. i would suggest either the nikon 12-24mm if you have the money or the tokina 12-24mm if you want the best bang for your bucks.

  • Hey, i recently purchased a Nikon D80 along with a 18-55 lens and a 70-300mm lens, and I've got to say, that the Nikon D80 is the best camera I've ever owned, it is easy to use for beginners but also offers professional features. Currently i have a lens rage from 18-300mm, so i'm just curious as to which lens i should next purchase. Your opinion would be appreciated. ;)

  • Excellent review. Covers all the bases.

  • Just like AConfire said, Olympus made a lot of 35mm SLRs with fixed zoom lens (the IS serie I think), and digital cameras like the Olympus E-10 and E-20 are SLRs too even if they have a fixed lens. Just some examples.

  • Just a quick note... SLR doesn't mainly mean Interchangeable lens's. SLR means that you see the image straight through the lens. What you see through the viewfinder is what you will be getting. You look in the viewfinder = straight through the lens.
