It may not be the true bass guitar part written by the Jonas Brothers and co., however that doesn't mean it's not a true bass guitar part. A good bassist can play in the traditional bass guitar role, but s/he can also step up and play solo's, be prominent, and act like a lead guitarist with a bass. A good bass guitarist is able to play in any way necessary for the song in question.
