Always placing your X clockwise or counterclockwise doesn't work, but you can still force the game if you remember the oxo/oxx/xox pattern.

Imagine the numpad on your keyboard being the boxes:

You go 5, your opponent 1. By the rule, you now go 4, forcing him to circle 6. By the rule, you now have to check 7 - ending the game, as your opponent can't win anymore and will just randomly circle any box, breaking up your pattern.

You just have to keep the pattern in mind and practice forcing it.

@countsmyth It always works as long as you go first, the opponent isn't deliberately trying to lose, and you go COUNTER-clockwise if the opponent uses a center spot and go clockwise when the opponent uses a corner. But it only works once per audience as they can soon see that the game only ends one way when played correctly.
