That Buddha looks so monumental from a distance, but the closer they get the smaller it looks. I have a small Buddha made of brass and few wooden ones. The look really cool, much cooler than a guy hanging on the crucifix, though I prefer that guy.

Lovely green countryside. The statue is actually of Budai, a Chinese folkloric deity sometimes seen as a Bodhisattva in Buddhism. There's a new religious movement called I Kuan Toa that's popular in Taiwan who refer to him as Maitreya and who built the shrine (Wikipedia).

My bad, I don't know anything about Taiwanese Buddhism, but I read that they mix Taoism with Buddhism which might explain the Budai statue. The shrine seems quite new and I can't find any information about it but it might be just a regular Taiwanese Buddhist thing, don't know.

I just looked it up and the statue was built by the Providence Maitreya Buddhist Institute founded by Wan Hao-Te, which is a disassociated faction of I-Kuan Tao religion.
