The best.....that's really subjective.....he wAS TRUELY GREAT AS WAS COLTRANE, sonny rollins...what about Joe Henderson........I love it too.....but at least we still have MB...what about him....
@bluetony888 sorry for late reply. Mike played so hard at times that he blew his throat out once. Now I dont know what that means but he had to have an operation because of it. HEAVY CAT. If God played tenor it would sound something like Micheal B.
man this is the first song i hear of his. cant believe what iv been missing out on. could anybody give me some reference to some of his best songs or which ever is ur favorite/s
Michael Brecker was actualy, and to a surprise for many, black, he got infected by AIDS in such a young age and he could have probably succeeded if he only had gotten a little while longer to live, back in the home country, the AIDS took away many dreams.
Don't compare them. That's immorally wrong and stupid, at least in the case of Coltrane and Brecker. Brecker jammed with Coltrane growing up. I go to Brecker's high school, so I know. Just listen to and enjoy both of them. They're wonderful players in their own ways, and comparisons like that ruin one's listening experience. Just sit back, relax and enjoy.
It is great that today we can stil listen to his absolutely fantastic playing; at least he left us with whole bunch of great music... never tired of his style, sound and soulful playing... I don't believe I will ever get the chance to thank him, but anyhow, thank you mr Brecker!
mike's totality as a professional sideman, saxophone virtuoso, recording artist, his ability to exist in literally every genre of modern music, it is nothing short of staggering to observe. take it from someone who stands, barely visible, in his shadow; mike was on his own planet in these terms. truly a gift to share the time/space continuum with him.....
my high school band director has been wanting people to see what musicians are up to, so he has a weekly current events assignment. He plays alto and soprano sax, and legitimately listens to smooth jazz like a nerd, so a kid forged an article saying that Kenny g was dead. The director FREAKED!! It was awesome.
Realmente Mike era el mejor, y lo seguira siendo hasta que alguien pueda superar lo que el hizo. Dios le dio un don muy grande el cual desarrolo muy bien. Me hubiera encado conocerlo...
I know exactly how you feel. I discovered his music not too long after his death and it saddened me greatly to learn of it. R.I.P. Michael, the world misses you.
It is a phenomenal and emotionally-draining composition, especially the original recording. However, this particular arrangement and performance is a bit...ehh. Brecker wants to stretch out on the melody, but Metheny insists upon playing guitar in unison there. Two leaders competing for control. It doesn't quite work. Incredible tenor and guitar solos though -- they're best on their own.
This shows Brecker's versatility in his playing so well, he has so much power but it is so controlled! Amazing! Metheny plays great too. thanks for the post
I never thought much of matheny's music!! I think that was in the 70's, it was all pentatonic and that is when mark eagan and danny gotlieb left him...he's gotten better but still a bit boring...
This just demonstrates that Michael was as much about inner soul and profound sensitivity as he was about mind-numbing technique. I thank God that I saw him play live, unforgettable. God bless you Michael and thank you.
In some ways I prefer this rendetion to the 80/81 version... always nice to hear the boys loose and playing like they're in a club rather than a studio.
great, i watch it again and again, for months, and even I am a saxophoneplayer, and I love the way micheal played, I would like to ask, if there is any chance to get the full solo of pat in an extra take?
I wish the spammers would do more demographic research...maybe I'm wrong but I'll bet most people who look up Metheny or Brecker aren't interested in hot new ringtones...
fuiste el mas grande de todos el jazz llora tu partida, seguramente en un rincon del cielo estaras derramando notas intensamente. adios brecker eres mi referencia total
HEY EVERONE, I found a pianist, who is so good. She may be even better than Michael...well maybe not that good, but definitly my someday surpass him. Search for "long vent: improv on piano"...Its amazing. Some of the best I've heard on YOUTUBE.
Saxahorn, please, stop posting the same comment on all Michael Brecker videos...you're stupid, you can't compare a sax player with a pianist ! What do you do this for ? It has not any sense ...
he was THE GREATEST! so it`s not so weird that many people arround the world were thinking about him, one, two, or tree days before hi die! he was a worldwide sax master!!! now they got the best saxophon sound upstairs in heaven!!! we all miss you mike!!!
I always said that Michael Brecker's playing was so beautiful, that it was as though he had wings. I am sure that he literally possesses a pair now, where his is residing. This is my favourite Metheny/Brecker tune. Rest in peace Michael.
This song always touchs my soul, and now...about souls, I wish comment a very strange coincidence what happened to me monts ago. I'd readen in the net about the rare illnes of mike, around one year and half before. I must to confess that later I almost forgot it, believing that he'll find cure, and I had no more info.
Well, sunday january 14 in the morning(spain), I "suddenly" thought in Michael with certain worry I hurried up to google, and.. He had passed away less than one day before
(cont.)Coincidence? maybe. It was 1/500 prob., taking account the days I could to question the same and I didn't.Why exactly that day? I'm still surprised and moved. I´m free and I prefer to believe that there are more things in heaven and earth...
Anyways, Thanks michael. Have a nice trip wherever you go.
I'm very skeptic of just about anything, but I had a similar experience. Instead I didn't google him but I started learning some of his licks from an old article in Guitar Techniques magazine. 2 days later I find out he died the night before that!
mobius II thank you so much for this post. Ever since I've heard the studio version of this I've been searching for a studio version, and here it is. Beautiful tune.
Yeah...they're both great...I remember being in a band that opened for a group called "Dreams." As I recall the horn players were the Brecker Brothers and on drums Billy Cobham. Thx for sharing
Really too long ago to remember who played bass. I remember Cobham came out and did push-ups before they played. They did a song called "New York" which we subsequently covered in our band.
