I don't know how people who point lasers at aircraft think they won't be caught. Lasers leave a trail that is extremely easy for a helicopter to follow.
I think Mythbusters should do an episode on this. While a laser has never actually crashed an aircraft YET, it has diverted them, causing police to lose suspects they're pursuing or risking the patient aboard a very time-sensitive life flight. So lasers on aircraft CAN kill, one way or another.
There is no way this is going to harm or crash any helicopter nor aircraft. Total bullshit completely like the police to say they could have flown off the road into a ditch or whatever. What are they going to crash into? They don't have to look at the laser. They can get some sunglasses if they don't like it. I am going to hit them with a 2000 lumen spotlight wtf. When taking off and landing, the LAST thing you want is for your vision to be impaired even for a moment. Landing especially requires full concentration. its a bit overvalued i think...because if you know the nature from laser technics then you know of divergence: each meter that the beam travel trough the air the beam becomes wider and less powerfull, yes sometimes the pilot can see the beam especially wen the laser is a green laser because of the higher sensibility of the human eye to the green spectrum(RGB cones) we have most cones for green in our eyes. but almost always the beam is on that hight reduced to almost no power.

@powerplantnl How is it not worth years behind bars? It's a mindless act that makes pilots disoriented when flying an aircraft... You're threatening the pilot and whoever else is on board of their life. Better to punish them now than wait for someone to actually take down an aircraft with a laser.

Despite the exaggerated claims of the media, lasers are usually just a minor annoyance to pilots. There are virtually no fatalities from lasers. The punishment (years in jail) definitely does NOT fit the crime.

this is right. I live like 30 miles North of Lindbergh field and I've seen alot of times a laser appearing on a car or bike or street sign. You get used to it but you always still have that feeling of "holy shit is that a sniper?" in the pit of your stomach.

Even if you just get blinded for a second, there goes your night vision, and at a critical time in the approach too. Aggravated assault and interference with a flight crew are the standard charges. Two guys from Buffalo are serving 5-7 years or something along those lines for being absolute idiots like this.

@TopazSkillMauler It's light. It goes on until it hits an object, where it will get partially absorbed and will bounce off somewhere else. Light does dissipate however, so if it goes over a long distance it will hit a wide circle rather than a small dot.

its a bit overvalued i think...because if you know the nature from laser technics then you know of divergence: each meter that the beam travel trough the air the beam becomes wider and less powerfull, yes sometimes the pilot can see the beam especially wen the laser is a green laser because of the higher sensibility of the human eye to the green spectrum(RGB cones) we have most cones for green in our eyes. but almost always the beam is on that hight reduced to almost no power.
