I am huge fan of Suicide; Alan Vega and Martin Rev account for well over 30 cds in my music collection. I have not one Springsteen CD. Although not to my taste I respect this man. This is the best cover I have ever heard (not just of Suicide). I can see he undertands Suicide and does not try to copy them. The song is minimalist, improvised and passionate; it is the spirit of Suicide not an imiitation . As powerful and beutiful as the original. And to do this as an encore for HIS audience..wow!
cool cover. You know what's funny is if the real Suicide had ever opened for him, they would have been pelted with garbage--just like when they opened for the Cars!
@weaselidiotu Well yeah, Springsteen's not punk, so it's going to be missing a certain edge. Springsteen's voice still carries it though, it's just a different kind of thing when he does it.
Thank you so much for posting this great video. I have looked for this song for so long since I was at the Royal Albert Hall concert, it was brilliant and the set will always stay in my mind.
Springsteen's were in Max's Kansas City, the NY nightclub where he got signed to Columbia Records; he gave songs to max's stars Patti Smith (Because The Night) and Robert Gordon(Fire, which was covered a few years later by the Pointer Sisters) and he was clearly a fan of Suicide;
the Max's family sticks together!(yes, even Madonna who got her start there as a rocker in the late 70s,before 'going disco'),which is why she had Iggy & The Stooges induct her into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame
got this on a 10" vinyl. brilliant cover version of song by SUICIDE,a true legendary electronic / pioneering duo fro 70"s New York. Alan Vega is a god !!!!
You know what Alan Vega thinks: "At the end of the interview, when asked what's his favorite Springsteen song, Vega answered "'Dream Baby Dream.' On my death bed, that's the last thing I'm going to listen to. I'll play it at my funeral."
It's not phony at all. Suicide are one of the most original bands of all time. Why do you think your hero, Springsteen covered the fucking song? Ask him what he thinks about them.
It's phony real to be indignant about my liking Suicide more than Springsteen. It's also stupid and childish.
haha right... you are worthy of deeming a legend's rendition as pathetic. Yes, perhaps the original is better, but Bruce delivers his personal take on the song. Artists are allowed to experiment and sing it in their own way (in this case, this sounds like classic Springsteen)
heartfelt but oddly literal. suicide are always already in dub space [they bring something new to it too] sound and mixwise, and that gives their music a weird wild serenity and tenderness - always reminds me of lee perry's late period black ark recordings, which is something for two white art punks from new york. respect to the boss, but he doesn't go there with this.
Nothing official, but almost any bootleg from the second half or the "Devils & Dust" tour should have it. He played it a LOT once he "discovered it on that tour.
the hairs are standing up on my arms. im not even a super big fan but jesus...the boss can pick a great tune. everyone make sure to peep the original by suicide. ★★★★★
anybody else think that this tour influenced bruce's singing? To me he sounds like he's singing in almost a country style even on the hits on this magic tour..
My respect for Springsteen grew even more when I found out that he was using this song to close his shows. This song has been a favourite of mine for over a quarter of a century. Keep those dreams burnin', baby.
You can hear the Suicide sound in his song State Trooper also. I found out about Suicide a few months ago from an Lcd Soundsystem lyric. Love there early work.
I saw this song/show 3 times in 2005. Amazing finale to a great show. We were "havin' church" in the arena for the last 6 minutes and 39 seconds (if you know what I'm sayin').
If you liked this performance, you must check out the other one here on youtube from jenshenrik. When he stands up in that one it's like he's almost in a trance he's so into it...Aaaazing!

I think the first Suicide and Springsteen records were recorded in the same studio, in Blauvelt New York , at the end of my street. Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. 's really a great great record , right up there with Trout Mask Replica and Vintage Violence.
@shorty30586 Hey Shorty! Maybe u are still alive, it has been 3 years. I saw him a few time on this tour. You could knocked the couple of thousand people overe with a feather when he played this! I watched and very few times I saw a audience react in this way and I have been to many, many different concerts. Thanks Bruce!
I saw Springsteen twice during this tour and the best song was the last....Dream Baby Dream! The show in Bridgeport, CT (my hometown), Alan Vega was there and Bruce introduced him. What a thrill!

Bruce Springsteen doing a cover version of a song by SUICIDE!?!? (Alan Vega & Martin Rev.) I knew "State Trooper" was inspired by their work, but Wow! I'll give Bruce credit for putting more personal soul and vocal emotion into this than Vega & Rev do, turning a love song into something just shy of a hymn.
This song knocked me out when I saw him in DC. Got a bootleg copy & copied the song for my son who was leaving for college where he'd be playing baseball. The kid is following a dream. Told him to listen to this song when he felt like throwing in the towel. Magic
Amazing Video!!! Saw him on Nov 16, East Rutherford, NJ.. Bruce Springsteen is the best.. idc what u people think.. the people who r hatin. Im i jersey boy at heart!
Springsteen knows music, back in '84 mentioned Suicide being a huge influence on his recording "Nebraska". Suicide is one of the most underrated pioneers of punk and the type of music Zorn and Sonic Youth would later do. Joe Strummer's future in the Clash was sealed when he saw Bruce in London. Bruce eventually met with the Clash when they first came to the US.
Saw Bruce do this in Cleveland. It was the most heartfelt live performance I have ever experienced in my life.
