Not to take anything away from Pavlec's play (and it was ballsy), but old-time hockey goalies wore no masks.

Again, different players in a different era... but there was a time were masks/helmets were taboo in hockey (and football and baseball, for that matter. They still are illegal in rugby.)

The old timers couldn't shoot the puck as hard as the guys now. Rugby has scrum caps which can be worn.

@mercapri302 - Scrum cap is legal...but it only really prevents your ears from getting mangled. Doesn't protect the face and you can certainly still get concussed while wearing one
