HAha why do Beijingers use Chinese characters?? Do you think chinese people ask that question when they go to an Arabic speaking country or to America? LOL!
I can answer you this question, because I live in Beijing : Everyone live in Beijing knows it, it's true, and they can tell you tons of details of it.
Thanks for the answer. So I guess its like it used to be in Poland before the fall of the iron curtain, everyone knew everything by the word of mouth or underground publications.
That Massacre was a painfull and awkward time of my country, it is horrible, but people's still have lives to go on,even the students were killed didn't really have an argument, they are just unsatisfied with the change of China. Now everyone just think there isn't a really good way to go, so just live with it.Blaming the polictics won't make a change, politic is a dirty business anyway.
I would say my English is fluent as I'm educated in English but to read pinyin and to figure what it means takes reflecting on the context of the sentence/phrase in order to get the correct meaning. Replacing Chinese characters with letters will introduce a host of problems and it's just not feasible Learning to read and write hanzi is part of Chinese life, culture and civilization advancement if they have the opportunity. It is a great joy to know Chinese hanzi, it's a wonderful language.
We say "那个" a lot, especially people from hebei and beijing, when we can't clear our mind and think out what to say, we even use "那个" just like saying "hmm...", so please don't beat me ont the face if we will have a conversation. haha.
Chinese characters have so much meaning and culture is them... they were developed many thousands of years ago. So much rich history there. And they're really neat because some of them actually resembles a drawing of the thing it represents... so it's just dumb to get rid of them.
The real reason why Chinese (as well as Japanese) still uses characters is that it has so many homonyms. In speech, normally context indicates the right meaning. When writing, a text written in only pinyin would be way more confusing than using characters, not to mention short sentences or loose words which by the character can always be recognised.
Only because of the characters Chinese and Japanese have become the languages they are, so you can't just remove them.
Kind of an insensitive question, don't you think? Of course the Chinese use Chinese characters! It's who they are! We shouldn't try to uniform everything so much...I love the richness and variety of the world.

Asking about changing characters was not a silly question.
Pinyin has tones to differentiate between 'horse' and 'mother'.
When the tones are the same you have an argument, but then what do u think they do with the spoken language when this is the case??? They use the context. It's the same problem as with written pinyin but they still manage.
Vietnam did it and China could too. Perhaps it would take some of that pressure off the young students if they didn't have to learn characters.
I think though that even though characters are a bad choice from a practical standpoint, it is something so strongly associated with the culture and something so unique and also very beautiful and artistic, that it would be a real shame to toss them aside just to get rid of a few cases of confusion and to make it easier to learn. There must be some use for aesthetics in life rather than just choosing simple practicality as being more important than anything else.
no it's not a bad choice. An educated Chinese would almost never write a character wrong, whereas an educated university student in my school always forgets how to spell (like "dilemma", you know)
The reason that the Chinese can't romanize their language is because they wouldn't be able to tell mother(妈)from horse (马). Both of which are romanized as "ma". Also it generally doesn't matter what dialect one uses, it usually means the same thing when written down in characters.
smacker's correct about the chinese character question, but who said the it's an american or an englishman who asked the question? english is not the only language who uses letters u know. anyways i still love smacker, just wish the questions are a bit smarter.
In this whole discussion about letters people seems to forget there is already a "traditional" and "modern" way of writting the characters BECAUSE the tradiotional ones where more complicated to write and read!
So, there is already a change in the "letters". As long this change is comming from "inside China" and not from outside pushed upon them, the Chinese people will improve the "readability" of their language to make it easier anyway!

very primitive country... still ladies selling tickets on the buses??? wow! and using picture-like writing - so archaic!!! I am sure they have to use some kind of letters!!! How else could they type on keyboard or even write text messages on cellphones!!! Their blind pride is killing the chinese and makes them look really stupid on the eyes of foreigners...
well you don't look that bright in our eyes, either.
1. the ladies selling tickets also act as a guide, who greet the passengers, answer questions about routes, and deal with emergencies. it makes the ride a more pleasant experience.
2. we do have a phonetic system to spell the characters out. but we preserve the characters as well because: a. it is artistically pleasing. b. it is a good brain work out. it has nothing to do with blind pride.
For answer #2: You are using phonetic which are keyed in by using Latin letters... So in fact Chinese, that are using Computers, already use the Latin letters.
You just have to stick to Characters because a lot of words are pronounced the same and only in context (when talking) or chinese characters they make sense.
And: "Westerner" characters are Latin, so a long ago death language (and numbers arabic) so "Westerners" already adopted the system that are easier,... long ago :-)
I wouldn't say Latin is a death language... it might be associated with death somewhat through the tyranny of the Roman Empire... still, to be fair...
Well, it might be still thought and learned (as very good basis to learn other languages) but it nevertheless is no longer spoken or written in any country as official language (at least as far as I know :-))
That is what I meant with "death" language. It is also no longer "developed" as any language that is spoken in any country is permanently subject to change. Words can get new meanings, new words are created, etc.
the romanization of hanzi (chinese characters) is called pinyin, which was originally developed with the intention to eradicate characters (obviously, a failed attempt).
there are more than 70,000 chinese characters (probably more but that's how much large chinese dictionaries contain). even if u take into account of intonation, there would be at least 30 different characters for one pinyin 'alphabet'. for this reason, it would be easier to maintain using characters.
Well the alphabet has 26 characters, there are 4 different pronouncations (which are only added on top of the letter) so it kind of would be the same alphabet but with different "accents" on top of each letter (like the french and spanish handle it nicely as well, like á, â (or something like that).) But the main problem is that with the same pronouncation the meaning of the word could be completely different, so the Latin characters will NOT work, other solutions have to be found ...
Actually, there are some very good reasons why they can't change.
First of all, even with the heavy tonal aspect, Mandarin Chinese is a language lacking in phonetic diversity. Therefore, if one were to write it solely in an alphabet, there would be no way to tell the difference between the very large number of words that are all pronounced exactly the same but are completely different in meaning. Korean, however, is polysyllabic and more phonetically diverse, so they were able to change.
For comparison, look at Japanese: a language very, very phonetically limited with no tonal system, meaning that without the hanzi (or kanji, i suppose) element in their writing, reading above the 3rd grade level would be almost impossible.
Second, the Chinese have used the characters for thousands and thousands of years, and it is an irreplaceable and vital part of their culture. Smacker's reaction to the question shows this perfectly: we use the characters because, well, we just do.
Just read what you were replying to. I didn't say the word "should", yet you accused me of doing so. Or can you not tell the difference between "could" and "should"?
out of all the questions that have been posted throughout she picked those? ofcourse chinese people have to use characters, what kind of ignorant qustion is that. Just like smacker said "what would we be without them," the same applies for us: what would we be without are latin alphabet, we wouldn't be able to get very far in life, because things such as education we wouldn't be able to abtain.
1. Our traditional Chinese try their best to keep their love.
2. It is the same answer to many countries, why westerners do not use Chinese?? You have to use both sides of your brain, when you learn Chinese characters. (Figures and sound)
3. Too many populations lead to serious competition, including everything.
Why would Chinese still use the Chinese? If I were the one who has been asked such a "intelligent" question especially have to answer it in front of lens, I definitely will be too shocked about the question for quite a while.
However Smacker's answer is intelligent and straightforward. Actually she was a little bit annoyed by the question as saying:"What would we be if we speak English?"
I dont know why u people are answering this 2nd question, it's so dumb that I'm speechless.n'some ppl here are bitching about how smacker is not well educated. well u guys think only well educated ppl are smart? n' ordinary folks can't have their point of view on everyday life issues?that's the whole point of the show isnt it?! I hate it when ppl are so judgmental! n'that bus question-my answer is next time why dont you go ask the person who takes your seat instead of accusing the whole nation!
to sqly1983: so what, smacker just makes it so sincere to tell the real everyday life in china. sure then can interview a doctor or someone from the gov but it's all gonna bullshitting for sure
Well ... I was from Beijing and what I want to say is that "smacker" is a typical Beijing Old Madam ,典型的北京老娘们儿,(which means a person with "low education"), so her answers for some questions were totally wrong or no-sense.(e.g. the answer for buying bus ticket and the answer for chinese using chinese characters etc.) ...
funny idea... replace chinese charkters by letters... would be damn hard to read (just for the record: i'm no chinise)... same strange idea as writing western stuff in chin. charakters... also damn hard to get the meaning of it; i guess the reason why he asked is he thought chinese charkters work the same way as our letters (my grandma also does...)
Ufco is a rude idiot. They use them because thats there language why should they change it? I love the charachters. Ok there are driving me mad trying to learn them but thats the Chinese write and I wouldnt want it any other way.
People Don't queue up in London either. It's a freaking chaos. I mean public transport in London by itself is a freaking chaos already. It's very stressful!
I think maybe it's an old country thing.
I don't know where in Canada you're from, I've been to Toronto. People are polite there and things seem to work.
People in Hong Kong queue up too. And everything works perfectly. Public transport is stress-free.
Ufco is a dumbass! What kind of question is that? Your making the chinese give up their language and culture in order to romanize it? They fucking invented Pin Yin to make it easier for you! Thats basically stealing their identity, similar to what the french did to the vietnamese.
But it's not her first language and she speaks it VERY VERY WELL. She speaks it fluently. There's always room for improvement, but you should give her some credit for mastering the language so well.
Do you speak English (Her language) AS WELL AS she speaks her Mandarin??
what I said her Chinese "NEED TO IMPROVE", maybe she's good in speaking but if you listen to her you could know that she's a Lao wai from each word she says:), for me I believe that my English is better than her Chinese, I speak English & Chinese as a second language btw... :)
I'm going to Beijing in just a couple of months.. watching your videos is really helping me get mentally prepared and excited about going.. thanks for making them :3 I love Smacker, she's adorable XD
I love Smacker :) The question about why not using chinese characters in china and if you stand up, why would someone sit in your seat was stupid.... THINK ABOUT IT!!! Thanks SMACKER :)
about the seat on the bus, it depends on where you at. In city like liuzhou, GuangXi; people literally give up the seat for elders or pregnant woman every time they ride the bus. Also it has to do with how crowded the bus is. in China you just can't expect people keep your seat after you stand up when it's a very crowded bus.
HAha why do Beijingers use Chinese characters?? Do you think chinese people ask that question when they go to an Arabic speaking country or to America? LOL!

The second question is so stupid.
lindos 3 years ago
I dont know why u people are answering this 2nd question, it's so dumb that I'm speechless.n'some ppl here are bitching about how smacker is not well educated. well u guys think only well educated ppl are smart? n' ordinary folks can't have their point of view on everyday life issues?that's the whole point of the show isnt it?! I hate it when ppl are so judgmental! n'that bus question-my answer is next time why dont you go ask the person who takes your seat instead of accusing the whole nation!

Why do the Chinese still use Chinese characters??
----------------------------------------
Real Answer:
Chinese consists of countless homophones, so if we don't use Chinese characters, there will be endless confusions.
Smacker isn't well educated. She spent her time in the video just reiterating that the Chinese are still using the Chinese characters.

Smacker! You're so cool. I adore u. Can you smack those govt bastards torn down all those poor household houses to build that stupid Olympic games?
kongtube 3 years ago

"典型的北京老娘们儿" rofl!
I couldn't agree more...

It'a shame when I heard Chinese steal other's steat.

Why not just say "someone steal other's seat" instead of "Chinese bla bla bla..."
I didn't remember I stole anyone's seat.

What do you expect from an over-populated city?
The person who asked that question was a bit naive.

Oh god, can you imagine how ugly all the writing in China would be if they had PINYIN all over them?
hellokittysmoothie 3 years ago 3
It'd be like Vietnam.
It's a shame that the Vietnamese were forced to abandon their original writing system by the French.

funny idea... replace chinese charkters by letters... would be damn hard to read (just for the record: i'm no chinise)... same strange idea as writing western stuff in chin. charakters... also damn hard to get the meaning of it; i guess the reason why he asked is he thought chinese charkters work the same way as our letters (my grandma also does...)

UFCO's question was kinda STUPID....
hot12lips12 3 years ago 4
Ufco is a rude idiot. They use them because thats there language why should they change it? I love the charachters. Ok there are driving me mad trying to learn them but thats the Chinese write and I wouldnt want it any other way.

I think it is impolite when they don't line up on the bus.
danielpaco2000 3 years ago
I know what you mean.
Rab1975bit 3 years ago
Omg I love the HK subways.
stayplus 3 years ago
Ufco is a dumbass! What kind of question is that? Your making the chinese give up their language and culture in order to romanize it? They fucking invented Pin Yin to make it easier for you! Thats basically stealing their identity, similar to what the french did to the vietnamese.

your Chinese pronounce need to improve....
andelong 3 years ago
But it's not her first language and she speaks it VERY VERY WELL. She speaks it fluently. There's always room for improvement, but you should give her some credit for mastering the language so well.
Do you speak English (Her language) AS WELL AS she speaks her Mandarin??
Rab1975bit 3 years ago
what I said her Chinese "NEED TO IMPROVE", maybe she's good in speaking but if you listen to her you could know that she's a Lao wai from each word she says:), for me I believe that my English is better than her Chinese, I speak English & Chinese as a second language btw... :)

about the seat on the bus, it depends on where you at. In city like liuzhou, GuangXi; people literally give up the seat for elders or pregnant woman every time they ride the bus. Also it has to do with how crowded the bus is. in China you just can't expect people keep your seat after you stand up when it's a very crowded bus.
