This is seriously the best version of a great song. Can you imagine any of today's twerps writing such lyrics and finding that kind of intensity and sound with just three instruments and no synths? Thought so.
Thanks it's great. It's not 100% live audio though. There's definitely overdubbing of backing vocals, some guitar and synthesizer. Fantastic energy in this performance.
@87vwscir No overdubs. Stew does the harmony, and both Sting and Andy have Moog Taurus synth pedals that one plays with one's feet. I believe they were monophonic, I may be wrong. On the Synchronicity tour, they each had keyboards on the edge of the stage that they could quickly hit a note or chord on and then let ring.
@Nyquest I remember seeing urgh in an old movie theater in downtown Norfolk Virginia during it's initial release. I recall a bunch of us getting out of our chairs and slam dancing in the aisles when Joan Jett came on and did Bad Reputation. What a great concert film that was. I had the soundtrack on cassette but it's gone. This refurb you did on the video is outright excellent. Do you have access to the movie "Police around the world" that was another classic. Saw the cops 4 times in the 80's.
@Nyquest You have this entire frejus concert footage, just an amazing concert, I have the police around the world vhs, had it for 20 years but I never seen this concert in its entirity. I wonder if it will ever be released since this was the police at there very best! I have always wanted to see other songs at this concert when the world, Fallout and message in the bottle from this show, this show had a unique sound and the police were just on that night, it was an amazing show!
@Nyquest Do those other songs have a great sound when the world is running down, was sting dancing around the stage. Did he bring out Brian his stand up bass, for shadows and walking on the moon. that ampitheatre had a great sound, man I wish I had a time machine, if I had a choice of any concert in history this would be the one I would of attended and I would be on the front row. I'm sure it was a bummer when it ended, the fans were probably like what an awesome show we just witnessed!!
Fantastic quality! WOW. There is some footage of this same concert of them doing de-doo-doo-de-daa-daa where a guy chucks mud at Sting and he gets steaming pissed off at the guy, threatening to "rip his fucking arms off". Would love to see the whole concert similarly cleaned up. Thx so much for this Nyquest!
I've seen other footage of this concert where they sing De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da and some chap throws mud at Sting. Sting is pissing furious and ends up threatening to tear the guys arms off. Would like to see that too. This footage is fantastic, and the sound is monstrous, including Stings thudding fretless bass. WOW!
@Nyquest XTC, UB40, Jools Holland and Skafish played at this concert as well. Do you have that footage? I'd love to see it as little pieces of it were included in "Urgh! A Music War."
This was part of the material for The Police Around the World Movie but it didn't make the cut although De Doo Doo Doo and Don't Stand So Close To Me from the 80' Frejus show did make it into the movie.
It's where there's a guy throwing mud at Sting and Sting gets pissed and hits him in the head with his bass.lol
that was originally from the police around the world right? Man you did a hell of a job with it, fantastic, best i have ever heard it sound.....very well done....
This probably my most favourite representation of Stewart Copelands drumming. The filming edits arent just focused on Sting all the time... You get to see what Stewarts up to quite a bit... If I wanted to show anyone what SC was like I would go for this vid ( taken from Police around the world which is still only available on VHS tape! :( ). Ive devoted my life to Stewarts style of drumming - even buying a replica drum set up. He is truelly the master!
Yes it is/was. This is from the film Urgh! A Music War! Which was filmed at Les Arènes, Fréjus, FR 8/28/80. That footage (of Sting getting angry) can be found on 'The Police: Around The World' home video. It was during the song "De, Do Do Do..." A great show!
@monkeytrousers Ah yes Urgh! I was about 16 when Urgh came out and I knew this looked familiar. :-) Some other really good performances in Urgh. XTC, Echo and the Bunnymen. Even the Fleshtones were good! :-) Cheers
This clip is from a 16 mm music film archive that I have some access to, there is a lot of Police stuff. As I am a fan from way back & run my own production company(Nyquest Limited) I thought it would be good to telecine some of it & clean it up/sweeten audio & colour correct.
@Nyquest I've seen this clip before, and i got to give you compliments on the quality of the restoration, because everything is excellent. All the other versions of this are loud, distorted, and attempt to pick up the crowd furthermore degrading the the police by making them appear to be but a popular trend. You're editing technique is unique genuine talent.
@Nyquest It's an except from the documentary " Police around the world "....everyone can get that "access" ...i have the full documentary 4 example ;)
@ferrari934 It also in dvd now i guess, but this was an extract from the documentary "Police around the world" at the beginning of their carrers exploded..!! Thay travel every where in a different situation...so interesting ;) Might u still find it on vhs...amazong or e bay. Good luck !
Brilliant - best version of this available (very well done on the upgrade work). Very very clear sound, love the shots of Stewart - you can really see how he blasts round the kit. Dare I ask - is there any more?
There is hours of unseen footage including Australia 1980 South America, Glasgow 1979, Hammersmith 1979, 3 tracks from 1977 "Sting goes to the doctors"
"Sting Looses I out takes from "Police Around The World"
Alternate videos from Derrick Burbidge etc etc.
I wish I could load it up but I am unable due to contractual reasons. This is up cos its commercially available on the Urgh VHS release.
