The moral of the story is the honour and humanity in trying to surive, especially if you have a young child and you want them to have the chance of life. This guy did not want to give up. The opposite is those sick nazi fuckers the Goebells who murder their own children rather than let them have chance to live in a world they did not approve of. Thye knew damned well there might have been a chance to get them out past the Russians, if only a slim one.
@MaricaAmbrosius I don't think she was spoiled at all. She just wants SOMETHING to look forward to, rather than eking out a living in fear for the rest of her life.
@tjmuk Spoiled with things to look forward to, then? :) What would you have done? If you had a child?
I suppose I can respect her sacrifice if it was to ensure that her husband didn't have a second person to look after on their "road trip". She said in the scene where she left that they wouldn't make it through another winter there.
I think he could have addressed her emotional issues there. I think it would have helped not to ignore her statement that she felt like her heart was ripped out.
I'm leaning toward the wifes's view; there is absolutly no hope so whats the point? Survival just for it's own sake isn't living. At least if I offed myself some cannibal would get a meal and I'd be doing someone some good.
@dgl1962 yeah but if they had 8000 rounds it'd just be another shitty hollywood shoot em up blockbuster4 bullshit movie. Having a fully loaded gun would be like having a get out of jail free card.....it would take away a lot of the tension in the movie.
i like how viggo acts desperate and emotional but is whispering so his child won't hear, so heart-wrenching, especially the scene a little after this, the whispering becomes almost unbearable.
for one of the most disturbing, creepy, depressing movies i have ever seen...its ALSO one of the most beautiful, heartfelt, incredible journeys ive ever seen on screen.
although it CAN be slow at some parts....its very very hard to hate this film.
It better just be 10% charlize. Otherwise i shall go and kill the director. I hope the actor for the boy fits the mould of the character well.
and when the mom says "my heart was ripped out...blabla when i gave birth to that boy" or sumthing. what exactly does she mean? I always thought it ment she didnt like her son or sumthing. ugh i dunno.
The heart ripped out bit...does it mean that she suffers from the pain of having brought something she loved so much into a world that's so horrible? Imagine being a mother and bringing a child into a world of no joy or hope or humanity, only struggle and suffering and death...how devastating that would be, and how much guilt you would feel. Anyway, that's how I interpreted it.
it is kind of lame that they got a big name actress to be the wife. she had such a small role in the book, if the movie ends up being 70% charlize theron its going to be a different story.
TRUST ME...the clips dont take away from it...when you see it, theres MUCH MUCH more happening in those scenes (the clips take away good chunks of what really happened).

This was one of the best, most-realistic and heartwrenching looks at human survival against incredible loss.

Anybody notice the boy has a good resemblance to Charlize, almost as if he could actually be her real son.

What is more, I would have liked to hear what "more" she wanted than to survive. I think she's just spoiled.

Viggo's character's name is papa and he seems like a cool guy. In that situation, I mean I would be scared too but his wife seems like a coward.
