  • Who said that a bass is mainly to accompany other instruments? Charlie created an entirely new musical spectrum for the bass. One of the biggest musicians in jazz in the past decades.

  • How did Beyblades get me here?

  • so so beautiful.......

  • O improviso do Charlie Handen, é puro sentimento, que aliás, só tem mestre.

  • Très agréable. Ça, c'est du vrai jazz.

  • f... great piano solo !

  • Is this piece also called first song for Ruth?

  • KOCHAM TO!

  • Fantastic!

  • Charlie Haden actually showed me a long time ago that it's ok not to play complicated all the time. If you hear just one long note, then play just one long note. Lovely.

  • Beautiful

  • I've never heard anyone else sound SO like Stan Getz. Not an easy thing to do!

  • @flat5flat9flat13 I thought exactly the same thing. I saw this video elsewhere where it referenced Ernie Watts. In two notes (and one view) I knew it wasn't Ernie. So, where has Gary Foster been hiding? Yes, I know, the studio. He is a major player and this piece was gorgeous. I am trying to remember where I heard it before. It had to be Getz and Kenny Barron (People Time), but Laurence Hobgood also recorded a beauty with Charlie Haden and Kurt Elling.

  • This is passion and a poem talking to the universal man/woman. Pure love and genius

    .

  • only one word to musicians of this caliber :MASTERPIECE!!!!!

    Marvelous PERFORMANCE,Fantastic!!!As Always JAZZ!!!!!!!!!!

    genius and technical capacity.

    All members are genius.

  • And on bass: Poal Nyrup!

  • Very nice video, thanks.

    But: Pianist is Alan Broadbent.

    Mrpostroel

  • I recon that you edited out the talking, but who the fuck start talking exactly in the beginning of a piano solo. TV-people can sometimes be really stupid. Nice upload though...

  • Gary Foster is so Fine. Sounds like Getz. The definitive Version of this Song for my likening is Getz and Kenny Barron on:"People time".

  • so nice ! です.

  • man he knows how to play less...

  • Can't wait 'till he comes to "Vossa Jazz"-festival 26. March!

  • Hayden thinks out loud more beautifully than anyone else

  • @leoray1234 well chek ernie watts ;P and then tell me

  • Charlie Haden actually has something to say with his instrument. No gimmicks, no tricks. He just speaks the music that is resonating from the well of his soul. Like a bird singing from the treetop. Naked and beautiful.

  • @libertatus Lol, stfu. You just ruined this great piece for me. Jerk

  • @MsMarc1234 ........hehee.. Um, sorry about that.

  • @libertatus that's the gayest comment i've ever read on youtube

  • Wow

    MGXMusicUK

  • jedna miłość ... PL

  • What is that bib thing on Charlie's bass called? I have been looking for one but i cant figure out what they're called.

  • Its called a bass bib. Check out Lemur music or Golihur or any other good online bass shop.

  • Saw these guys at the Sydney opera house last week. I really didn't enjoy their performance. Listening to this i really can't understand why. I'm really digging it now.

  • sometimes it's just something at the venue you can't put your finger on or something about earlier that day that set you up or you just weren't in the mental state for it who knows. I'm like that sometimes.

  • Yeah. It wasn't an ideal venue for a jazz gig. Too echoey. I guess they were expecting a big turn out. Hardly anyone bought tickets though, they were giving out heaps of them for free. Thats how i got mine.

  • I was there too, also by means of a free ticket.. I agree about the venue. Opera house is never very good for Jazz gigs that need to be intimate. Even James Muller didn't sound as good as he normally does.

This song however was AMAZING. The sax solo was incredible, made the night for me.

While I agree that the gig was disappointing, you've gotta cut Charlie Haden some slack. I mean, he is like 80....

  • Hey Rainee you know this is Axel. :D

  • hahahahahahahahahhahaha

  • he's a young 72

  • Born in 1937 makes him around 72

  • i guess 15 years old SArabian wanker doesnt know muds about music

  • the most musical bass player ever.

  • no that is flea from the red hot chili peppers..:P

  • no bahaha

  • Ha ha ha ha ha! You're kidding right?! i bet you think they're the most musical band too! Ha!

  • no i dont say that but there one of the beste band of the planet

  • they exuly are.

  • Flea is great, but C.H is the greatest bassplayer on planet earth

  • jack blacks father in law?

  • lol he is

  • wow

  • Thats such beautiful lyrical playing. One of the best jazz musicians i've encountered

  • wonderfull !

Does someone knows when et where it was performed ?

  • The sumptuous sound of Charlie - there is no better alive!

  • Alan is playing beutifully, another beutiful hommage to Lennie Tristano (check the block chords)

  • so, so ,so beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • my favorite bassist of all time. any idiom. upright or electric.

  • WOW! thats was quite something!!! sax player is like a cup of warm velvet!

  • What a beautiful tune! It always makes me feel like crying. Charlie Haden is one of my most favorite bass players. His solos in slow tempi are very soulful and beautiful. His running bass in fast tempi are just incredible. I enjoyed every bit of this video. Thank you for posting this.

  • Charlie Haden always seems to put everything he has in each and every note he plays. That's what makes him so great I think. He doesn't need speed to keep it interesting. As a listener you don't simply hear the notes he plays, you also feel them deep within.

    A true master !

  • The best soloist on the planet...... TONE!!!!!

  • Charlie is the man. just sooooo musical and no bullshit. I saw him this year with quartet west and it was just great.

  • Now this is bass playing that does credit to the instrument. All those lightning fast boys like NHOP are marvellous, but they tend to sacrifice sound for speed. Charlie Haden is one of the few real BASS players, as were Percy Heath, Leroy Vinegar and George Duvivier.

  • Dont forget Ray Brown.

  • I don't normally like jazz in its purest form - I discovered Charlie Haden after hearing that Mark King (the bassist of my favourite band Level 42) presented him with a BBC Jazz award this year. I've really taken to this, it's so fresh. I also find it interesting to see how talented Haden is as a bassist - I've only really ever appreciated the pionneers of the electric bass before now (King, Clarke, Miller) but this is fantastic! Good post :)

  • I am listening to gary foster for the first time, amazing!

"cleaningness" of his sound makes me thinks of stan getz, great

  • Absolutely amazing! Normally you would hear Gary on alto...I recommend the duo cd with pianist Alan Broadbent (Live at Maybeck Recital Hall-Concord Label)..not one spoiled or unnecessary note...one of the top 5 'on call' reed players for Hollywood film sessions!

  • oh my lord i love this

  • I didn't realize that Gary Foster was playing with Quartet West. I saw him live a few times in LA, sometimes with Broadbent. Ernie Watts is great, but Foster doesn't suffer by comparison with anyone, IMO. A great Foster album is Make Your Own Fun.

  • Gary is playing quite a bit these days in LA with the Clare Fischer Big Band, either at the Vibrato Grill in Bel Air, or at the Four Points Sheraton at LAX...He just finished his 26th appearance with the Academy Awards Orchestra earlier this year--phenomenal!

  • Hey, I posted my comment 4 months ago! Your info would be very helpful if we were still living in the US. Coincidentally, a week ago I attended an Alan Broadbent performance here in Auckland (his home town) - beautiful, as always. I'd love to see Quartet West or Gary Foster again.

  • You can always tell when Charlie Haden is playing the bass. His tone is different than everyone elses, I can't describe it. Very mid-rangy and thoughful melodies.

  • As well, the dubious fingering technique. Somehow, it doesn't seem to hinder his playing at all.

  • Hehe, I would gladly sacrifice Simandl for that sound!

  • fingering techniques are for beginners.

  • No, I believe anyone can benefit from technique amelioration. However, it is not strictly necessary, as Haden's case demonstrates.

  • You start with strict technique, then you relax from it.

  • What do you practice after that?

  • you dont.

  • you're stupid.

and to the guy who says technique isn't necessary and charlie haden is proof of that, i'd like to point out that while he is an incredible musician, his intonation is not that great. just because he plays with soul and swings hard doesn't mean he's perfect.

  • Charlie Haden is lush. he is a great jazz musician and composer. end of story

  • thankyou for this beautiful performance

    from Kirsten MacKenzie, New Zealand

  • Great composer, great bassist, great American, great human being--Charlie Haden is not only God, he played bass on the very first album by God's immediate superior, Ornette Coleman. And the Quartet West is one of his holiest avatars.

  • Notice how he's standing a considerable distance from the drummer with a plexiglass baffle between them, plus he's wearing earplugs. This is because he suffers from tinnitus and hyperacusis,2 conditions I suffer from as well, and I can tell you it really make it hard to play music, making his playing doubly impressive.

  • That was amazing! I haven't heard Gary Foster before he's great the whole band are and Charlie's amazing as always 5/5

  • no one sounds like that on bass - and wow, Alan Broadbent has some amazing chops with both hands...

  • Charlie is singing on and with the bass! Great!

  • awesome. anyone know the chords to this tune? I transcribed it, but would like to cross check it as i can't find it online anywhere. thanks!

  • It doesn't get any better than this.

  • My friend Charlie Haden. He's the best!

  • great , I'm going to see Charlie Haden Quartet tomorrow in Rotterdam. Can't wait.

  • @elimk 3 years from your phrase... Did you saw him?

  • Is this Al Klink on sax?

  • Excellent. Ottimo.

  • man, gary fosters been listening to stan getz on people time!

  • I think you right there. Gary is doing a fine job but i miss the unique sound of Ernie Watts

  • That is more than evident at the ending.

    Thank You.

  • Great sound!

  • video stops and starts . Great player (with a wonderful bass too.) Hope it cleans up. Thanks TF
