Who said that a bass is mainly to accompany other instruments? Charlie created an entirely new musical spectrum for the bass. One of the biggest musicians in jazz in the past decades.
Charlie Haden actually showed me a long time ago that it's ok not to play complicated all the time. If you hear just one long note, then play just one long note. Lovely.
@flat5flat9flat13 I thought exactly the same thing. I saw this video elsewhere where it referenced Ernie Watts. In two notes (and one view) I knew it wasn't Ernie. So, where has Gary Foster been hiding? Yes, I know, the studio. He is a major player and this piece was gorgeous. I am trying to remember where I heard it before. It had to be Getz and Kenny Barron (People Time), but Laurence Hobgood also recorded a beauty with Charlie Haden and Kurt Elling.
I recon that you edited out the talking, but who the fuck start talking exactly in the beginning of a piano solo. TV-people can sometimes be really stupid. Nice upload though...
Charlie Haden actually has something to say with his instrument. No gimmicks, no tricks. He just speaks the music that is resonating from the well of his soul. Like a bird singing from the treetop. Naked and beautiful.
Saw these guys at the Sydney opera house last week. I really didn't enjoy their performance. Listening to this i really can't understand why. I'm really digging it now.
sometimes it's just something at the venue you can't put your finger on or something about earlier that day that set you up or you just weren't in the mental state for it who knows. I'm like that sometimes.
Yeah. It wasn't an ideal venue for a jazz gig. Too echoey. I guess they were expecting a big turn out. Hardly anyone bought tickets though, they were giving out heaps of them for free. Thats how i got mine.
I was there too, also by means of a free ticket.. I agree about the venue. Opera house is never very good for Jazz gigs that need to be intimate. Even James Muller didn't sound as good as he normally does.
This song however was AMAZING. The sax solo was incredible, made the night for me.
While I agree that the gig was disappointing, you've gotta cut Charlie Haden some slack. I mean, he is like 80....
What a beautiful tune! It always makes me feel like crying. Charlie Haden is one of my most favorite bass players. His solos in slow tempi are very soulful and beautiful. His running bass in fast tempi are just incredible. I enjoyed every bit of this video. Thank you for posting this.
Charlie Haden always seems to put everything he has in each and every note he plays. That's what makes him so great I think. He doesn't need speed to keep it interesting. As a listener you don't simply hear the notes he plays, you also feel them deep within.
Now this is bass playing that does credit to the instrument. All those lightning fast boys like NHOP are marvellous, but they tend to sacrifice sound for speed. Charlie Haden is one of the few real BASS players, as were Percy Heath, Leroy Vinegar and George Duvivier.
I don't normally like jazz in its purest form - I discovered Charlie Haden after hearing that Mark King (the bassist of my favourite band Level 42) presented him with a BBC Jazz award this year. I've really taken to this, it's so fresh. I also find it interesting to see how talented Haden is as a bassist - I've only really ever appreciated the pionneers of the electric bass before now (King, Clarke, Miller) but this is fantastic! Good post :)
Absolutely amazing! Normally you would hear Gary on alto...I recommend the duo cd with pianist Alan Broadbent (Live at Maybeck Recital Hall-Concord Label)..not one spoiled or unnecessary note...one of the top 5 'on call' reed players for Hollywood film sessions!
I didn't realize that Gary Foster was playing with Quartet West. I saw him live a few times in LA, sometimes with Broadbent. Ernie Watts is great, but Foster doesn't suffer by comparison with anyone, IMO. A great Foster album is Make Your Own Fun.
Gary is playing quite a bit these days in LA with the Clare Fischer Big Band, either at the Vibrato Grill in Bel Air, or at the Four Points Sheraton at LAX...He just finished his 26th appearance with the Academy Awards Orchestra earlier this year--phenomenal!
Hey, I posted my comment 4 months ago! Your info would be very helpful if we were still living in the US. Coincidentally, a week ago I attended an Alan Broadbent performance here in Auckland (his home town) - beautiful, as always. I'd love to see Quartet West or Gary Foster again.
You can always tell when Charlie Haden is playing the bass. His tone is different than everyone elses, I can't describe it. Very mid-rangy and thoughful melodies.
and to the guy who says technique isn't necessary and charlie haden is proof of that, i'd like to point out that while he is an incredible musician, his intonation is not that great. just because he plays with soul and swings hard doesn't mean he's perfect.
Great composer, great bassist, great American, great human being--Charlie Haden is not only God, he played bass on the very first album by God's immediate superior, Ornette Coleman. And the Quartet West is one of his holiest avatars.
Notice how he's standing a considerable distance from the drummer with a plexiglass baffle between them, plus he's wearing earplugs. This is because he suffers from tinnitus and hyperacusis,2 conditions I suffer from as well, and I can tell you it really make it hard to play music, making his playing doubly impressive.

As well, the dubious fingering technique. Somehow, it doesn't seem to hinder his playing at all.
timebomb98765 3 years ago
Hehe, I would gladly sacrifice Simandl for that sound!
willyager 3 years ago
fingering techniques are for beginners.
doddsalfa 3 years ago
No, I believe anyone can benefit from technique amelioration. However, it is not strictly necessary, as Haden's case demonstrates.

You start with strict technique, then you relax from it.
