  • Best project Mr. Griffith ever did before he went communist along with Opy.

  • love this movie both Andy Griffith & Patricia Neal were fabulous in it

  • Andy Griffith playing Andy Griffith before he was Andy Griffith...if you've never been to a shitty town that calls itself Mayberry, then you have no idea what I'm talking about. If you have, this should be a clear case of art imitating life.

  • the movie reminds some people of hank junior

  • One of my favorite movies. It did help give me a road map for show business success.

  • Marlon Brando and James Dean in....

    Mayberry, RFD...

  • Reminds me of Glenn Beck...and Jon Stewart. One is just more subtle than the other.

  • @motrelsnops

    Hmmm....I can see that.

Reminds me of "just for a flag" Michelle O.

But, it's all in what you perceive, right?

  • that is soooo Glen Beck!

  • I'm surprised the Reps aren't trying to run him too this time around!! LOL!

Shara "six gun" Palin could be Andy's running mate!

  • its glenn beck

  • excellent film!

  • I finally saw this on TV tonight(AMC). What a brilliant film, dark/noir but brilliant. Cool music in this film too. There's a great Andy Griffith record that came out about the same year as this movie. It's a called Andy Griffith Shouts The Blues. Great folk blues!

  • Andy Griffith was BRILLANT IN THIS ROLE! Patricia Neal and first timer on the screen Lee Remeck who are two very outstanding actressess in their own right really made this movie with Andy shine. :)

  • easily one of the three greatest performances in movie history... and arguably the greatest performance ever!!! your the man AG!!

  • Lonsome Rhodes Obama.

  • 3 Words: Lonesome Rhodes Beck.

  • ...or we could be living in Cairo

  • Al Sharpton?

  • Time for a remake, starring Jack Black in a buzz cut and with the name, "Ken Peck."

  • The L.R show to me was is like the Oprah show of today. Oprah says"Read this book, eat this food and vote for Obama ". We live in a world that is controlled by the elite and we are merely slaves to buy and work for them. Dont watch t.v!

  • Have to laugh about all this Beck/Rhodes comparisons..are you fuckin kidding me.As a very liberal individual I'm no fan of Beck's, but come on what he does is Ratings fodder, I.E more viewers=more advertising dollars for the network..they all do it. Ideology on steroids, no big deal. Rhodes became megalomaniacle which a lot of the movie was about. It's not like Beck, Obermann etc.are misrepresenting themselves unlike that fact twisting tool Michael Moore, A republican in democrats clothing IMO

  • I'd rather Glenn Beck be this guy than Obama really be the Joker.

  • Comparing Glenn Beck to Lonesome Rhodes is more compliment than insult. Rhodes was at least at good down-to-earth guy whose downfall was brought about by fame, fortune and the powers-that-be who manipulated him.

How many average people has Glenn Beck helped? Zero to my knowledge.

On the contrary, Rhodes used his position to help a woman whose house burnt down; Beck celebrated the burning of a man's house because he didn't pay his 75 dollar fee.

At least Rhodes has redeeming qualities.

  • Aww... Look at all the butthurt Glenn Beck fans. Keep crying idiots, it entertains the rest of us.

  • @nutbagbrew102 Get some of that fancy book learning, or you'll always remain a loser.

  • @nutbagbrew102 Actually, that's about sixth grade grammar.

  • Comment removed

  • @nutbagbrew102 That should be "as I said," not "like I said." Your swinish illiteracy is appalling.

  • Billionaire Communist George Soros,...the anti-American puppetmaster,....AKA Dr Evil.....follow the Soros money trail!

  • "O'Reilly violent against Moore. Cuban Healthcare- ideal conditions shown (which was untrue) ..lied about the CIA quoting him."

    You're the liar!

  • @4teepee ...lol ...that's quite a comeback ... look it up - and try and support your accusations. The cuban healthcare is riddled with people starving in bug infested hospitals - and Moore only reported the red-carpet treatment he was given. He lied about the Cubans living longer than Americans (American's live longer by 1.something years) ...and the CIA issued a statement saying they never said what he quoted they said in his film - thus 2 lies supported by evidence. Now support your b.s.

  • @anonyms404 LOL. Those are mere claims.

  • @4teepee Documented. Look it up - I'm not indulging you here - unlike the fact that you've provided nothing. Now enough. Done dancing your half-educated lemming walk.

  • @anonyms404 You're going to have to do better than that, moron. I knew you didn't have anything. You must have been listening to Beck too much.

  • @4teepee annnnnnd now into the name calling. Listen - you've pulled b.s. thru your posts - I called you out on it - so you asked me how they were the same - and I gave you the info - plus the evidence. You want more? Google what I just showed you or even looked up "Michael Moore Lies" on here and you'll find the support - so don't gimmie it ... have fun with your one-man-show.

  • @anonyms404 See my previous post, and get educated.

  • @anonyms404 I am not so stupid as to believe the CIA. So I looked up information on Cuban health. The 2006 United Nations Human Development Report's human development index states the life expectancy in the United States is 77.5 years. It is 77.6 years in Cuba. (Human Development Report 2006, United Nations Development Programme, 2006 at 283. That took me a whole two minutes to find.

  • @4teepee interesting how you look up the UN report - but not the report issued by the U.S. guess what a .1 difference is something I'm going to argue about - but the fact is the U.S. version is higher - and given that the UN sides with terrorist organizations and nations on Israel's right to exist - I don't put much stock in their b.s. either. What you said about the CIA shows you're just spouting rhetoric ... so we should believe Michael Moore and the UN over the CIA and the US ... right.

  • @anonyms404 You stand corrected. lol

  • @anonyms404 Ahh. A CIA lemming. I know one when I see one.

  • @anonyms404 Speaking of terrorism. Read about Operation Mongoose. Read also the Goldstone Report.

  • @anonyms404 Beca8use the CIA never lied about anything, they only gave people LSD without their knowledge... even the US says so. Heck, the UN has so little power that they're way more likely to be honest because no one gives a shit about what they say. But all politics is bs, and so is the media, and if you think differently you're either a moron or self-deluded.

  • @ciobanica lololol - so geeeee because people in the CIA have lied, that means that everyone's a liar all the time by your logic, right Cio??? Let's see - so that also means British Intel lied, Russian Intel. lied, Chinese Intel. lied, French Intel lied, Mossad lied ... let's see who else??? Oh just EVERY intel agency out there ... so EVERYONE was lying right? Who's deluded and moronic again? Ridiculous....

  • @anonyms404 Yes dude, that's totally the logical conclusion that can be drawn from what i said... especially when you take into context your post that i replied to... Might i suggest you read some book, article or something about logic, maybe you'll find out why when all X's are Y's it doesn't mean all Y's are X's. Maybe look up the definition of a Strawman argument too while you're at it.

  • @ciobanica you can't back up your accusations so you go down a different road. Get real. More b.s. from someone parroting left-wing propaganda.

  • @anonyms404 Well true, logic was invented by a bunch of gay people some 2300 odd years ago, so you got me there...

  • @ciobanica you used zero logic to get to your "non"-conclusions - and act as homophobic as you want, you can't change that you've got nothing to go on, but continued hate-speech (btw, I just love the lock-step lies your leftist people have spread all over the media by politicizing the Arizona shooting- it's been stopped now and the country ain't buyin' it - so you gonna' run for cover like all your friends - or you going to try and continue spreading lies with the few still in the room?

  • @anonyms404 Fun Fact: Stating that the CIA are no more trustworthy then any other organization that has an officially recognized history of lying is the only thing close to a conclusion i posted here so far... everything else you think i said it's only in your head... when arguing with multiple people it's a good idea to separate their arguments one by one so you don't get confused. Uness your trolling, then GG.

And pederasty was very popular in Ancient Greece... it's homophobic to deny that.

  • It's no wonder the rodeo clown Beck's mother committed suicide. You would have done the same thing.

  • so wheres becks alter ego like mr rhodes has in the movie? with a hundred people working for Beck for years now wheres the whistle blower(s) ? without any evidence showing Beck is faking it i think its a real reach to make an analogy of the movie and Beck. but for Soros his agenda is out in the Open now - no wonder he wants beck off the air - and if you agree with soros i hope youre ready to die for him and his cause - as we have groups already to counter any scuffle right now - you will lose

  • Glenn, is that you buddy? Acts like Beck, talks like Beck. Must be Beck.

  • Glenn BecKKK..!

  • Glenn Beck stole his shtick from this movie.

  • @4teepee yup ...him and Michael Moore.

  • @anonyms404 Michael Moore is no changeling.

  • @4teepee Michael Moore is exactly this character in this film. Instead of a "homespun" market/crowd - he caters to the leftwing, yuppie crowd. The ONLY difference is how they communicate to each. The b.s. behind it is zero difference. If you think otherwise, you're fooling yourself.

  • @anonyms404 How Glenn Beck and Michael Moore communicate is one difference, but it is a big difference. Beck knows he has an audience that is even less educated than himself and that does not live in a fact-based world. Another difference is that Moore has had the same political views from the time he was a print journalist for alternative media until he got into the entertainment realm. Beck rather recently came upon his "views."

  • @4teepee ahhh the old b.s. saw that one market is uneducated and the other isn't? Guess what dude - con-men (read up on how they work - lots of good books out there) operate on the "half-educated" ...these days that generally means people who are college grads and left of center. People who partially know a subject but not the whole. Further - don't even try and go down the road of Moore "being the same person" - he's a con-man out to help "the litle guy" - which is a key red flag.

  • @4teepee ...and geeeeeeeeeee what a surprise that you're in the defend Michael Moore camp and are at the ready with his bio on hand - right? You just out'ted yourself.

  • @anonyms404 I don't need Moore's bio on hand. I knew who he was before he was so famous.

You are driven by resentment toward "elites" who are better educated than you. But guys like Beck are not out to help you: Beck's shilling for the Wall Street banker bailout is a case in point.

  • @4teepee Wow - you just swung this to me being "resentful" and how I SUPPORT Beck? Is there a reason you just made up b.s. out of nowhere (re-read what I wrote- owned)? Further - this isn't about "who Moore" was, is or is going to be - it's about him being a con-man no different than Beck or this Andy Griffith character. Feeding an audience b.s. they want to hear. Look it up - get FULLY educated. Oh - one last thing: It's not smart to lie in a post where anyone can read what I really said.

  • @anonyms404 I may have conflated you with Nutbagbrew.

However, explain and give conman examples of just how Michael Moore and Glenn Beck are similar.

  • @4teepee - Sure:start with Beck -he stated Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Walters made statements that sounded like they disdained their audience. They called Beck out on this on their show when he guested and he dodged the question. Moore - exact same thing: appearing on talk shows - outright lying about what people said, taking it out of context, etc- specifics: O'Reilly violent against Moore. Cuban Healthcare- ideal conditions shown (which was untrue) ..lied about the CIA quoting him.

  • @4teepee ...those are just 2 - I could go on and on - but I'm not because you're not running this - you got called out for doing exactly the same thing and now you're backpeddling ...so let's stick to it here: Moore is an idicator. He represents people who think they're educated - but are only partially so - and they have more money. This is the reason why leftist propaganda has sprouted in the country - the half-educated are easily swayed by what they want to hear.

  • SO you think this is Glenn.....You must be George (screw everybody) sorus

  • Sounds like Morton Downey jr.

  • No one uses the media like Obama does! Although he having a hard go of it lately.

  • If anyone is using the media these days it's Obama and crew to lie to us.

  • Glenn Beck is the new Lonesome

Rhodes but where is our Pat Neal leaving

the mic on while Beck goes off on the

gullible, easily led tea party Evangelicals.

Now even the square jawed Rev.

    Franklin Graham wants

a piece of the tea party action.

  • PURE GLENN BECK

  • @johnnydarkly

    I disagree.

  • @johnnydarkly ..

SO does THa as$ hole George Sorus

  • Lonesome Rhodes Beck!

  • Glenn Beck is that guy!!!

  • I watched this movie last night, and I found it to be spot on in showing the way certain unscrupulous people can use the mass media to influence public opinion.

Very good trailer, and thanks for posting, friend.

  • does anyone know what song is playing during the preview? It also plays on the DVD menu screen.

  • In the simplest terms, this characterization shows what happens when your trusted icons ,who are themselves puppets are hollowed out & filled with something that will cost you dearly -be it life or liberty.BTW That applies to right or left "wing".

  • @TumbrelJockey couldn't have put it more perfectly. Leftwinger's see Glenn Beck (and they wouldn't be wrong) and right wingers see Michael Moore and others in the mainstream press (and they wouldn't be wrong). It works both ways ... funny how one side gets called on it (Beck) ...but the other side is always given a pass.

  • @anonyms404 Another example is the deep cover assassin programmed by Eastern Bloc Intelligence with a ultra right wing "legend" in "The Manchurian Candidate".The possibilities are many.

  • Lonesome Rhodes was a shot at Arthur Godfrey, who for a time was as big as it got in radio and tv. Like Rhodes, Godfrey presented an folksy good guy personality when in fact he was a scheming tyrant behind the scenes.

The comparisons of Rhodes to Glenn Beck are, IMHO, wide of the mark. Beck's apocalyptic shtick is closer to a crooked televangelist like Jimmy Swaggart.

Also, Olbermann is as big an idiot as Beck. He's a Howard Beale-wannabe with a hefty dose of misogyny thrown in to boot.

  • @TypicalJAFO - I feel that most cable news personalities these days are all somewhat modeled on Howard Beale. Network got it right 35 years ahead of the curve. Good post, will check out godfrey.

  • Lonesome Rhodes Beck is one of the most brilliant references ever. A frighteningly prescient portrayal.

  • Becks ratings have dipped two seasons in a Row now, although still not suffering, I wander what his end will be? if things become catastrophic for him. Much like Anne Coulter he's run out of ideas on how to entertain, proving that shock has limits and like porn becomes boring after a while. Too much stimulis makes Glenn a dull boy.

  • LonesomeRhodes (Andy Griffith) A Face in the Crowd and Bob Roberts (Tim Robbins) from the film Bob Roberts seem almost prophetic of Glenn Beck. I think it's true, the movies do talk to us about things unseen, but this is . . .the twightlight zone. Olbermann had it right all along, Glenn Lonesome Rhodes Beck.

  • Now I know why Keith Olbermann calls Beck "Lonesome Roads" (or is it Rhodes?) The character seems just like Beck - a cynical jerk exploiting idiots.

  • YAY~ I live in the town Piggott that this film is filmed at :3 I feel so special 8D GOOD OLE' PIGGOT, ARKANSAS HOME OF THE MOHAWKS

  • Kazan later said that the movie foretold Ronald Reagan.

  • I could not agree more, Beck is lonesome roads, And it is amazing how many stupid Americans gulp it down.

  • This should not only have been a smash hit, but should have launched Griffith as a major movie star, even if he hardly starved moving on to TV. And if Beatrice Straight could win an Oscar for six minutes in "Network," then Kay Medford should have been at least nominated for the terrific scene she sews up in this one. "Crowd" is one of the best cautionary tales about celebrity worship ever told.

  • Time for a remake!!!!

  • Lonesome Rhodes Beck

  • Just re-release it and call it "The Glenn Beck Story".

"They're mine! I own them! They think like I do! But their even more stupid than I am. So I gotta think for em!"

  • IMO, the most brilliant film ever made. And no hyperbole there...it really is THAT good.

  • Glen Beck would be perfect in a re-make, amazing they wrote the script for him so many years ago.

  • Just saw this for the first time last night, check it out if you haven't already. It's quite ahead of it's time and still relevant today.

  • This character must have been a hero of and a real inspiration to James Carville.

  • @xxdonaldqxx Well at least somebody here realizes that this movie can be applied to the left just as much as it can to the right. For all the Obamabots on here saying this is the story of Glenn Beck, how much moreso could you compare to Obama...a man who didn't accomplish his fame because of any particular merits he had but rather because he's a man made by the media? I mean, for all the idiots doing whatever beck tells them...there are more doing what the left wing media told them to do in 08.

  • @cllewis1 Not really no. But nice try.

  • @cllewis1 Yeah . . . no merits . . . see if you can get into Columbia, Harvard Law and teach at law at UChicago with "no particular merits." I doubt you could even spell your name correctly the applications.

  • Beck does a great job of illustrating 6th grade behavior.

  • I agree with allot of what Glenn Beck says. Allot I don't. However I am a little leery of him because of his radical emotional swings, fat head and the fact that he is a recovering alcoholic. If he does expose himself to be a Lonesome Rhodes character he will stun allot of people but it won't surprise me . I hope he he doesn't crash and burn, but many do.

  • I hear the movie flopped when it came out back in 1957. They ought to re-release now that the times have caught up to it.

  • I think Glenn Beck IS this guy.

  • @Muggadoogy

Right, cuz Beck is certainly malevolent and power-hungry.

That's sarcasm, in case you didn't catch it. But I agree that some of the stylings are similar.

  • @Muggadoogy Get real.

  • @Muggadoogy i think andy griffith is this guy. griffith is nothing like andy taylor.

  • @johnrunion For sure, I get your meaning. I go way back. I watched the Andy Griffith show when it was

new. I'm a bit older than 'Opie'-- Ron Howard. My reference to Glenn Beck is better seen at another Face In the Crowd clip: Rhodes gets hired by the big boss.

1957 Face in the Crowd /message in movie

  • I think glenn beck is trying to be this guy.

  • Oh that HOT Blues sound. Why can't I hear it on my radio anymore ???
