@weitaoting It's how shark-fin soup is fished that makes it so reprehensible. Fishers kill them to get at a TINY amount of meat, and often just cut off the fins and throw them back into the ocean alive. It's not like a pig or a cow where we kill them instantly and use the entire for food.
@Jonmad17 Well, using part or whole of the animals doesn't make it more ethical than the other because killing is wrong. It's like blaming the shark fishers for "wasting the shark meat" because we don't eat the whole of the shark. If we eat the whole pig and cows, it is the same inherent mistake. Tell me a good reason why we should just stop eating shark fins, instead of turning into a full vegetarian.
@weitaoting Again, shark fishing in more inherently cruel given the fact that they aren't killed instantly, but flayed alive to preserve the taste. There's also the fact that sharks are an endangered species, and that shark fishing kills thousands of other forms of aquatic life. Farming might be cruel in some ways, but it doesn't have those problems.
v No we shouldn't. Firstly, there is the issue of eating endangered species and fucking up the ecosystem. Secondly, shark fin really doesn't have a taste of its own so finding another substitute should not be too difficult (ex. "bubbles" in bubble tea. You eat them for the texture, not the taste).
But the issue is that every Chinese wedding/major celebration I've been to serve shark fin soup as a display of generosity. It's the convincing them to get rid of/replace that tradition thats hard.
@Pokemonandblackberry PROTIP: If enough of it is made that it's accessible to middle-class -- maybe it might be time to start doubting its status of "delicacy."
Back when it actually WAS a delicacy, it was BECAUSE it was a small part of the shark. That's how the concept of "delicacy" WORKS.
@LuisReefTank I don't care about sharks, but you have some nice tf2 videos. I just started playing that game since I stopped playing Xbox since its getting expensive and am discovering free computer games.
@MrInfinite09 Even though the chines may catch all the fish in there local area and move to another area and catch all the fish there. The Pacific ocean is too big to let them go extinct because of human activity.
@TheSchug But that's where you are wrong, in short the population in the world in increasing as; the current calculated population is about 6 billion; and in the upcoming yeas it will increase to about 9 billion to 11 billion; the connection is as fallows: Increasing demand for shark foods will mean increasing killing of sharks which leads to decreasing the shark population. And sharks just like mans need years to become adults; kill all the adult sharks = extinct species.
@TheSchug That is simply wrong. You need to get out more. Take a trip anywhere south of the united states and you'll find people killing sharks for chinese shark fins soup. The reefs of Belize that used to be healthy with sharks are now being raped by shark fin killers.
People with your lack of understanding said that we couldn't kill all the whales either.... We didn't, but we easily could have.
@elleleeanne Cows are not on the brink of extinction because we eat meat. Like cows most of the animals we eat are bred especially for that purpose and their populations are kept artificially high. Sharks are not bred, they are caught in the wild, mutilated and left to die. This is not a matter of being a vegetarian or not, this is not a matter of animal cruelty or not. It's a matter of ecological conservationism. Shark species are going extinct because of our consumption habits.
@elleleeanne Yes, it would. But breeding sharks is incredibly difficult and costly, which is why a big shark-breeding industry hasn't developed. It's much cheaper to fish them in the wild.
It would also be preferable to simply kill them rather than leaving them mutilated and bleeding to death. Imagine cutting off a cow's leg and letting the cow live. Imagine the horror that animal would go through.
@Ikus13 I don't see how breeding sharks just to eat them is any more ethical than eating them for the wild. Do you know the ecological costs we caused just to breed cows and pigs in the world? That caused more damage to the ecology so much more than sharks going extinct. It's just the human selfish ego to want to preserve animals so they don't go extinct. A shark's death is no different from a cow's death, they suffer the same thing, just as you will suffer when you become someone's food.
In fact,Chinese are known to practically eat any known wild carnivore ever encountered in China. The Chinese are much more further advanced along the evolutionary cooking chain than westerners, over 5000 years. Just different Culture! Snakes,Turtles,Starfish,Crocodile,Seahorses,BirdNest Spit, Scorpians,Rabbits,(Organs, feet, tails of Pigs,Cows,Chickens,Ducks,Quails,Veal-Lamb)

Yao Ming you have eaten shark fin soup many times! I know!
how is this any different from catching dolphins? Japan has been slaughtering dolphins and killing them for food also but killing sharks is a bigger deal than that? A shark isnt just killed for shark fin. What about shark meat or shark cartilage? This organization is stupid. Your trying to ban catching shark just because of shark fin? What about the other reasons to not catch shark?
@sunnivastromskog that's because most of the common fish that we eat are not on the verge of extinction, sharks do not reproduce as fast as they do... PLUS sharks are very high up in the food chain in ocean ecosystems, making it extremely significant THAT'S WHY
@sunnivastromskog Two reason, sharks are on the verge of extinction and second reason is the brutal way they are killed. Their fins are cut off and the LIVE shark is thrown back into the water to die a painful death.

this is awesome~wish there was one for the Japan area. Its definitely eaten here alot more than whale meat, even though the whale cause is getting more media attention.Shark fin soup is considered just as much of a delicacy here as it is in China.
Why don't they start farming sharks for sharks fin soup? That way they won't have to hunt wild sharks to make the delicacy? Anyway, I think it's really hard to dissuade ppl if something is part of their food culture. There has been no progress either on dissuading the Japanese from eating whale meat.
@mineowyn It is impossible to farm sharks because they travel huge distances during their lifetime, many thousands of miles for some species. In fact most have to keep swimming to keep water washing by their gills in order to breathe. It would be like saying lets raise elephants so we can kill them for their ivory, it just doesn't make sense.
@UGENAdotORG except ivory is not consumed, so the numbers needed aren't as great? If you buy ivory it's jewelry or decoration that will last you a long time, so your demand won't be so great that you need to farm them. If sharks can't be in captivity, how come aquariums keep sharks? And zoos have elephants. I'm sure if we didn't farm cows and chickens they would be extinct by now given the global consumerist culture. Not to say that farming is good for the health of these cows and chickens.
@mineowyn Actually, while lots of species are kept in aquariums, they're almost all wild-caught. It's very difficult to breed ocean animals in captivity... I was reading a conservation biology textbook published in 2010 and right now one of the biggest issues is figuring out how to breed sea life reliably in captivity. So, no, we really can't farm sharks.
Good news is, there are plenty of substitutes for shark fin soup available! You can't tell the difference in taste or texture.
@mahdogzbite@kzchuah82 actually there is a slight difference, shark are just finned and the rest are throw back into the ocean. It's like cutting off the arms of a person and throws him back into a forest. Also finning creates a lot of waste, as only 3-4% of the shark is eaten. While killing chicken and pigs are still very bad too, at least they are killed first and over 75% are consumed. Anyways it is true being a vegeterian is the best solution~
What if you could see how so many people die in wars...............Could you still play 1st person shooter video games? Remember when the buying stops the killing can too.
@mopbrothers wow your a stupid jag off the reasons they make those make those games is for entertainment of course people know alot of people are killed in wars! yes i play 1st person shooters becuz they are fun and entertaining... cod was made 4 a reason to play and have fun!
@mopbrothers \wow your a stupid jag off the reasons they make those make those games is for entertainment of course people know alot of people are killed in wars! yes i play 1st person shooters becuz they are fun and entertaining... cod was made 4 a reason to play and have fun!
I don't think any of us who is non-vegetarian, is in the right position to criticize sharks-finning coz there's no difference with d slaughtering of poultry. Have we asked ourselves "what if u can c how bacon is made, if u can c how many zillions of chickens, pigs, fishes r killed 2 end up in soup n dishes?". n plz save me d crap of wildlife n poultry differences. Animals r animals, if u love them so much, dun eat any of them.
@kzchuah82 The main difference is that sharks are a non-sustainable animal that the entire ocean ecology relies on. Chickens are bred for food and are easily grown. Shark fin soup is a status delicacy that uses very little of the animal and depletes the natural resource to a point of endangering the existence of the species.
@kzchuah82 the thing is....the difference between shark fin soup and bacon is that pics are not endangered and there are still plenty of pigs.. sharks are endangered and if we dont stop killing them like we do everyday they could go extinct and EVERYTHING that we know now will be different just because these top predators have disappeared.
KNowing the Chinese (Myself included) they probably wouldn't even care. Hell, they'd more than likely say how it's a WASTE that the whole shark is also not being used for meat...then continue eating their shark fin soup.
Stunning, thanks WildAid. You've done so much for the sharks - please keep up the good work. I commend you all. This senseless and disgusting murder of an age-old species must be stopped before it's too late.
@stopsharkfinning In fact,Chinese are known to practically eat any known wild carnivore ever encountered in China. The Chinese are much more further advanced along the evolutionary cooking chain than westerners, over 5000 years. Just different Culture.Snakes,Turtles,Starfish,Crocodile,Seahorses,BirdNest Spit, Scorpians,Rabbits,(Organs, feet, tails of Pigs,Cows,Chickens,Ducks,Quails,Veal-Lamb). You ban this, Chinese will move on to the next exotic animal on the menu!!!
The culture arguement is bogus. The facts bear this out. Sharks have only become endangered in the last few decades - the Chinese have been eating more and more of this soup as their wealth has increased. It was originally only consumed on very special occassions by the very wealthy - now it is being consumed for pretty much any occassion, birthdays, night out with friends, any excuse.
Everyone makes mistakes. Yao Ming got married in 2007. This public service announcement was created for 2010 and filmed in 2009. How do I know? I am in this video. Therefore, Yao is not a hypocrite, this is all for a good cause.
I was not saying Yao Ming is a hypocrite, my comment was just a matter-of-factly talk without adding any opinion. I realized that it probably was not his decision to have Shark fin soup on the menu. It could be his parents, his wife's parents, or the wedding planner's decision who knows.
Sadly it still can not change the fact that his wedding banquet did serve the Shark fin soup which greatly conflicted with this Ad.
However, according to what you said - looks like I got the wrong info (out off Google) about the time line (of the Ad and the wedding). Thank you for correcting it for me.
What happens to that shark after the fins are harvested? Do they eat the rest of it, or is it thrown away?
This is a barbaric practice that needs to stop. I understand that it is cultural, but our ocean populations can no longer handle this kind of damage as it once did. People need to stop being selfish and think of their children.
If 2012 is the end, well thats great, we made it to the end of time, but if not we are screwing our children royally
@FiestyCat86 ...usually the sharks are alive when their fins are cut off, then they are thrown back into the ocean finless, they helplessly to sink to the bottom and lie there and die.
@WildAid Frankly for cantonese and mandarin version, it might have better impacts if you can find a Hong Kong star that support your efforts. Yao Ming ..... is not that well known in the real Chinese circle in comparison.
@TLWalther - Several months ago, I saw this PSA in a cab in Guangzhou (Southern China) -- Yes they have TV screens broadcasting programming, but mainly ads.
I have to say that the presence of the PSA was quite unexpected -- in a good way.
Help put an end to bloody sharkfinning and overfishing! We must Help Save Sharks from becoming biologically extinct now, before it's too late. The future health of the oceans depend on a stable and healthy shark population to maintain its amazing biodiversity. Sharks are a foundational keystone species that help control the delicate balance of the marine ecosystem by keeping populations of countless marine animals at stable and healthy levels.
Without sharks there will be a total collapse of fisheries and marine life around the world. Help Save Sharks, they need us now more than ever, and we need them too. Please watch the movie 'Sharkwater' to learn more. ~Peace~

Animals r animals, if u love them so much, dun eat any of them.
kzchuah82 1 year ago
@kzchuah82 The main difference is that sharks are a non-sustainable animal that the entire ocean ecology relies on. Chickens are bred for food and are easily grown. Shark fin soup is a status delicacy that uses very little of the animal and depletes the natural resource to a point of endangering the existence of the species.
thelowmax 1 year ago 2
@kzchuah82 the thing is....the difference between shark fin soup and bacon is that pics are not endangered and there are still plenty of pigs.. sharks are endangered and if we dont stop killing them like we do everyday they could go extinct and EVERYTHING that we know now will be different just because these top predators have disappeared.

Excellent stuff with Yao Ming. I saw the mandarin version last week, playing in a taxi in Shenzhen. Keep up the good work guys!

KNowing the Chinese (Myself included) they probably wouldn't even care. Hell, they'd more than likely say how it's a WASTE that the whole shark is also not being used for meat...then continue eating their shark fin soup.
netzero26 1 year ago
Stunning, thanks WildAid. You've done so much for the sharks - please keep up the good work. I commend you all. This senseless and disgusting murder of an age-old species must be stopped before it's too late.

FIN EATING DIRT BAGS
SERVITE888 2 years ago
And it is being consumed by people who 20 or 30 years ago would not have eaten it. It's a status symbol thing, not a cultural one.
stopsharkfinning 2 years ago 30
@stopsharkfinning it's a status symbol as part of their culture. So yes, it's a cultural one!
fusion01wp 1 year ago
@stopsharkfinning In fact,Chinese are known to practically eat any known wild carnivore ever encountered in China. The Chinese are much more further advanced along the evolutionary cooking chain than westerners, over 5000 years. Just different Culture.Snakes,Turtles,Starfish,Crocodile,Seahorses,BirdNest Spit, Scorpians,Rabbits,(Organs, feet, tails of Pigs,Cows,Chickens,Ducks,Quails,Veal-Lamb). You ban this, Chinese will move on to the next exotic animal on the menu!!!
iullynot 4 months ago
The culture arguement is bogus. The facts bear this out. Sharks have only become endangered in the last few decades - the Chinese have been eating more and more of this soup as their wealth has increased. It was originally only consumed on very special occassions by the very wealthy - now it is being consumed for pretty much any occassion, birthdays, night out with friends, any excuse.

Shark Fin Soup was on the menu of Yao Ming's wedding banquet. And that was about a year after this ad aired.
Check it out on Wiki.

serious?? hypocritic!!!

@PurpleRifle
Everyone makes mistakes. Yao Ming got married in 2007. This public service announcement was created for 2010 and filmed in 2009. How do I know? I am in this video. Therefore, Yao is not a hypocrite, this is all for a good cause.
shaylishya 2 years ago 4
@shaylishya

FiestyCat86 2 years ago 3
@FiestyCat86 ...usually the sharks are alive when their fins are cut off, then they are thrown back into the ocean finless, they helplessly to sink to the bottom and lie there and die.

I NEVER EVER eat those things. BTW, I hate Japanese eating the whales.

where is the Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese version?
that's where our target group is, not English speakers ...
TLWalther 2 years ago 5
We have made Cantonese and Mandarin versions which will air on CCTV this coming year.
WildAid 2 years ago 12
Excellent. Make sure it will get aired on Hong Kong TV as well - we desperately need to educate people in HK about this.

Good job.

@WildAid Frankly for cantonese and mandarin version, it might have better impacts if you can find a Hong Kong star that support your efforts. Yao Ming ..... is not that well known in the real Chinese circle in comparison.
AQUARIUMHOBBY 2 years ago
@TLWalther. I saw a Putonghua version in Shenzhen -- while riding a taxi of all places!
You are right that the target group is Chinese-speaking.

~Peace~
