First of all, UP sensored the true voice of this fine locomotive. I'm so tired of hearing dime a dozen K3LA horns. Doesn't matter now since it sits in Ogden doing nothing but it should have an old cast P3 or the M3. Just took a few shots on track one last weekend. She still has 3500 gallons of diesel too!
At Last we know the fate of our old slice of the great rio grande. 5371 is safe in the collection in odgen utah where she rests on track one. im glad i got see her in service. at least future generations will get to see what i fell in love with so much as a young adult, even if not moving or running hard like i saw her in my brief encounter with her. long live the denver and rio grande western
She looked beautiful in Cheyenne I wish I saw it running though then that would have been amazing. But still at least I saw it with my own 2 eyes and the contacts that I had in
interesting to note since the retirement of the 5371, the viewing per month of this video has over doubled. the 5371 remains safe and sound at cheyenne with rumors of a full as built restore job by the UP heritage fleet up there.... will be interesting to see what happens... long live the black and gold
I think its great that a normaly 'tough' company like UP are going to restore this unit and its great that they recognise the historic value of this machine.
Actually Wheeling and Lake Erie 5391 and 5413 would be the only two remaining DRGW SD40T-2s left, if the UP retired the 5371. And other than a very small "WE" over the road number they remain as they were when delivered!!! So no worries...the Rio Grande lives on!!!
regrettably, the 5371's voice has been silenced and she has been retired by union pacific. there are rumors abound as to her fate, but at least she'll be in a museum as a static display, or more hopefully, part of up's historic diesel fleet. 5371 old gal, you did the black and gold proud, we'll miss ya and thanks for the memories
@texaswestern70mac I had the privilige of visiting UP's steam shop in Cheyenne. In the building where they keep the 844 and 3985, and there was 5371. She looked good as ever but an odd note the number boards were missing (maybe being repaired). I have some pictures of myself in the cab. But she is in good hands, i wouldnt be worried.
Sorry but that where she belongs, and she will never leave. I got lucky enought o run her the other day, she was in midvale, and i had to move her (lead unit on the tramp) to get to my power for the day (utah railway) ;)" A#1
she belongs on the dirt train in helper, where she was for 10 years, sorry :/ mel baughman misses that engine, and since it aint back there any more, ill bet has since retired....
I heard that this engine isn't going to be patched and is going to be donated to the Salt Lake City railroad museum when it has its next major componet failure
no it isnt, luckily enough, but the bastard trainmaster at salt lake took it away from helper as soon as he heard this, hasnt been back since, so im a little pissed at that, but at least itll stay rio grande till it dies....
Yeah, this is Castle Gate. I grew up near there (1/2 mile away). The train's whistle (is that right?) makes me so homesick. It is beautiful country - God's country as I am told often.
I filmed it at castle gate, Utah, on my railfanning vacation in late july, its still unpatched thank god, but you'll have to travel to Helper, Utah as i did to photo it.
To be the true voice, it needed an M3 air horn on it.

Strange - but this horn sounds like the Canadian tuning variety.

I just wish they would have left the good ol' Nathan M3 on there instead of those "dime-a-dozen" K3LA's
