This is an appalling posting! The controversy surrounding John Calvin has nothing to do with his being a faithful servant of God; but it does have a lot to do with his shockingly pessimistic anthropology (we are totally depraved), his rejection of free will (which is presupposed on every page of scripture), his doctrine of double predestination, his establishment of a violently oppressive theocracy in Geneva (including burning heretics), and his biblical literalisn. Need I go on?
It's funny how so many people hate Calvin. No wonder. People don't naturally embrace the glory of God as a foundation of existence of everything. We exist to praise the Lord. :)
Calvin was a serial murderer.........the Pope of Geneva used his power to oppress and silience others thru persecution and torture and murder. To say Calvin is controversial bcuz he was so godly is just deceptive and wrong. Crazy wrong.

I would have loved to see some of these guys talk about Calvin's neo-Platonic dualism. Considering that this is a sort of gnosticism and the early Church condemned gnosticism, how is it that Calvin's gnostic teachings are embraced as biblical by the Reformed?
Perhaps, Doug, it wasn't the gospel that made Calvin so controversial. Perhaps it was his distortion of it that was so controversial. And there are many reports that Calvin was not a good man. His diabolical treatment of opponents, Jews and others is a testament to this.
Doug, Jeremiah and Athanasius never put anyone to death nor desired anyone's death as Calvin did with Servetus. How can you gloss over Calvin's horrific legacy of violence in such a cavalier manner?
Many non-faithful, heretical teachers are also controversial.
Another, answer that I think should have been answered based on Calvin's biblical worldview/interpretations and not on some vague comparison. I mean, that's not why he was controversial. It was the substance of what he preached. Say something about that. Do you know what I mean? His answers are lame.
I agree with Mr. WIlson in that, for if you say something true, but the people who are listening just AREN'T WILLING to hear it, furthermore, they will want it to be supressed... you're being very controversial...
A frequent thing with most Christians... if you say to someone 'if you don't put your trust in Jesus, you'll be separated from God... eternally' ...that's a PRETTY controversial statement, something we all as Christians should endure constantly...
PhilGeissler, you heard mr. wilson correctly but you understood him incorrectly. he was using a comparrison from scripture, that all christians can agree on, to show that a faithful servant outside of scripture will just as likely be controversial. if you or i preach the gospel at a gay and lesbian fest you and will more than likely be mocked and hated but this is not compare you and i to christ. does that make sence?
Did I hear Mr. Wilson corrcetly? Did he just compare Calvin to the prophet Jeremiah and the apostle Paul? I guess Mr. Wilson will next compare Calvin's "Institutes of Christian Religion" to the Epistle to the Ephesians. Can you say, "Cult-Like". Just being real.
@PhilGeissler Jeremiah and Paul, like Calvin, were just men. How is it "cult like" to make that comparison? It is not like he compared Calvin to Jesus, or to John the Baptist even. Calvin's "Institutes of the Christian Religion" is considered a classic of theological thought on par with Origens "On First Principles", Augustines "City of God" and Aquina's "Summa Theologica", and may I add that it is the best out of the aforementioned works.
@WorshipInTruth Friend, I don't doubt that Calvin's, "Institutes of the Christian Religion", are a classic. But they were not written by an Apostle or God-Breathed; Paul's epistles were.
@PhilGeissler I never claimed that it was, but if it is in fact Scriptural then it IS of the Ghost. You cannot proclaim the Gospel of Christ without it being of the Ghost, it is not the works of your own. "Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost." - 1st Corinthians 12:3

@cosmogang When he says "Calvin is a threat to the devil" he's believing and assuming everything you want him to say instead.

He also compared Athanasius to the Apostle Paul. Is that also cult-like?
