To be honest I don't see how a food crisis would happen. Not unless a) supply is rapidly declines (famine, fertile lands dry up) b) demand rapidly increases (population explosion).

Food will always be in demand so there will always be intensives for farmers to keep producing food with their land. Unless, I don't know, agriculture capital becomes scarce (tractors etc.), or the population explodes, I don't see it happening.

I could be missing something though.

kolo, soil is being depleted of nutrients. That's why fertilizer has to be used. Fertilizers used in intensive corporate farming is made from fossil fuels, notably natural gas. Fossil fuels are limited. Manure of course can be used but land being fertilized with it can not grow nearly as much food. Water shortages are becoming the norm and the population keeps increasing.

I mean, given what you've just said, outside natural disaster food shortage is a slow building crisis. It's definitely not "engineered to go off in 2010" or anything like that.

@kolomgorov because of the policies of the WTO and other international entities, there is not currently enough food to feed the current global population. this is due the the pracitice of neo-colonialism where certain groups within a developing nation are permitted to use high technology farm techniques and export what they produce, rather than feed the native population. for example, Britain does not produce its own food.

Here is a plausible scenario:

1. Government monetizes the debt, printing money to pay debt.

2. This results in hyperinflation causing the dollar to drop in value which sets prices to sky rocket.

3. To combat rising prices the government administers price ceilings on consumer goods such as food.

4. Farmers have no incentive to produce food because the cost of farming far outweighs any profit they can make.

If a total collapse were to occur I have no doubt that our government would try to maintain its grip over the people, but I don't think they'd be successful.

If this happens it will obviously be the state's fault, and will probably be used to justify more state control, assuming the state doesn't collapse.

the only way for people to die from food shortages is if the state puts price restrictions on food that make the price so low that it doesn't justify the cost of production

however, stocking up on any real wealth (including food), as opposed to fiat currency, is a good idea.

When the dollar dies, of course there'll be trouble with importing food from other countries, and it will also be a mess to trade food within the US

But there's nothing special about food here. Everything that is imported into the US will be in shortage. Until people figure out a way to deal with this. But no one is gonna die. In times of scarcity people value food over other goods and they'll figure out a way to get it.
