Syn and Zacky said in an interview for Guitar Player magazine that they changed their style of music because they were trying to take examples from their influences (Pantera, Maiden and Metallica mostly) and realized their influences didn't have to scream to get big so why should they? Though M. Shadows blowing his vocal chords mighht have been the biggest wake up call.

Their old screamo stuff was good, I love Waking the Fallen, but City of Evil is just as A7X as their first two.
