( cont'd ) ... I am 42 with 2 kids - my son turned 5 on Sat and my daughter is 2. My Grandfather died yesterday at 94. His legacy to me is pretty much identical to this... working hard and not complaining while you are doing it. At this moment, I DON"T have cancer or any type of terminal cancer. my Mom died at 58 6 years ago .
I owe it to Mr. Pauch to do what it is I have to do because I can - and I will.
I have been enthralled with this man since I first heard of him appearing on Oprah to reprise his "Final Lecture" speech to his students. I have since watched as much as I can to learn in his words what has insipred him in his life - he has moved me greatly.
Wow what an incredible man is all I can say. I am very touched everytime I watch the lectures and this one yes definitely brought tears to my eyes. I lost my father and to have been able to listen to his life lessons anytime I wanted God I would give that for the world. The family is very fortunate to have what he left behind...for those of you who have not lost a family member remember to make the most of all that you have while you can.
and leave the rest for karma, and your dreams will come to you. Nothing is certain, life is uncertain but death is the only certain for every beings. Before about 3 night ago i saw his speech. I wrote these 7things i learn from Buddha's teaching in my writing books, so when i watch his speech, i was very happy for all human beings can have such a chance to influnce by a big great Buddha like Randy. Why karma takes control of every cycle, because this how the world form. This has no conflct with
to understand, learn, and use karma cycle to make good changes in their destiny. i don't get pay, and i won't take your anything for charges. Helping others is our job and wisdom. What i see Randy is he has a greatest love inside, and he delivers the best message about karma to all beings. what he tries to deliver was 1st HAVE THE RIGHT FAITH, 2nd THINK THE RIGHT WAY, 3rd SPEAK THE RIGHT WORDS , 4th USE THE RIGHT TIME, 5th DO THE RIGTH THING, 6th MAKE THE RIGHT EFFORTS, 7th LIVE THE RIGTH WAY
have this man to leave all of us. There are not too many of you know how important karma to all of sentient beings. It takes control of every bit of matters of everyone's life. karma is a cycle, and it is the turth of the nature. What start the karma then? Your mind. Mind makes world. Mind plus all the knowledges you learn from education makes the cycle of your and others karma. I wish i could have meet this person, because i help people by chance to get heal from sickness by teaching them how
Amituofu to Randy and his family. i saw his speech by accident last night. The last thing he mention at his speech catch my most attention. He said " do the right thing, and let karma take care of the rest, and dreams will come to you." i am a Buddaism. Buddaism is an education and not a religion at all. My english is not very good, but i wish i can help this man in all kinds of way, and also the rest of all others people who saw his speech. It is such a very big lost for all sentient being to
His lecture and this remains my best you tube ever. Until now it was "Validation", a short black and white movie clip. Being an occassional smoker, I feel guilty... Not smoking may not keep you safe from cancer, but smoking has a chance to take you there. No healthy person have a right to smoke ! Look at all the people who would walk to the moon and back, if something would take their disease away !

How sad his death was for his students, and how hard it must be for his wife. However, this was an extraordinary person, and I susprect she is extrodinary as well. I share Randy's vocation as an engineer, and wish that I had have been fortunate enough to attend one of his lectures. I have seen his last lecture and I often use humor in mine to keep the audience engaged. I hope his kids make him very proud.
Markneveu's comment seems pretty unfairly reductionistic considering the circumstances. Cynicism is usually a good thing, but you're venturing into the realm of playing the contrarian.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
He admits that he did all this stuff as a solution to an engineering problem: how to make as much money as possible in his remaining time to leave money for his family. That's fine, but we should recognize that his motivation as a media wh ore was to pile up money for his wife and kids, not some selfless gift of some amazing knowledge he had to give the rest of the world. He had worked with Disney, Inc. and knew how to hype stuff - so he used that skill to monetize his death and cash in on it.
@markneveu1 I believe that working w/Disney already was going to give A LOOT of money to his wife. C'mon, this guy's retirement plan was too good, and Im sure that he had a life insurance, do you think he was worried about piling up money for his wife?? trust me, he already had it before he started going out do speeches. Otherwise, he might as well stay w/his family enjoying the last days of his life instead of going out touring!!!!

You see, everyday we meet people dealing with small stuff and overeacting, complaining a lot over small things. Think about what this guy went through. Many others out there. In general, people are not thankful for what they have. They can see, smell, taste, walk, breath without a machine, man, just keep trying. This guy is a hero. He has been through something we all fear the most, the unknown. In my opinion, faith is the only thing will make you get through the uncertainties we face.
@blingerninja no its not, have you ever heard of the statement "Begin with the end in mind" Death keeps you in check and lets you know to do things now, not later.
@mohammedabshaun But even with that logic, the idea that motivation lies in the knowledge that life will eventually end is depressing. The idea of "living fast, enjoying the moment" becomes overshadowed by the notion that eventually, it will all end. Yes, knowing there is an end sparks motivation, but it's ironic to think "I'm living the happiest life I can because I know sorrow's on the way."
It's like saying "Enjoy that candy right now 'cause tomorrow, I'm pulling all of your teeth."
ooh maan.....this is soo painful to watch....my fathers younger brother who is 49 yrs old, and has two boys a little older then randys and a baby girl exactly her age, and he is going thru terminal cancer....god this is painful to watch.....i wish i could be with him and show him this video....
What a guy, His simple heart is Big! May God be with Yaw! Anyways it is best dicribe in Bible " Our life is like a Vapour!" Its gone as fast as seconds. By watching his video I have learned that to never trust tomorrow! Do all things you want RIGHT NOW!
Dont put off your dreams in the "Next week when i get a free time" context. PPL DO IT IN THE FUCKING NOW! lmao. ANyways God bless his soul. And I will meet you all of yo ass in heaven so, save the remaing message for afterlife!
I came back here because someone replied to my comment. I saw the video Sep 2010 now it's Jan 2011. I'm 32 rebuilding everything about my life, body, mind etc after I walked away from what should have been a fatal car accident. I have a second chance @ life, but none knows how to give advice on how to live this 2nd chance better than someone who's not given one. My heart races thinking about this video. I live by his words daily & he did change my life. My name is Zadig & I thank you Randy.
For me it's an accidental visit to this page and boy I have turned fan of this soul who is living the hearts of many dearones. I am sure his kids will be very proud of him and make him proud. I believe all his emotions are expressing his love for his kids, realizing he is gonna miss the very fun seeing them grow and successful as he has seen many of his students. God has his own plans and we are so helpless in judging his wisdom.
Life is so god damn cruel why does life take away people such as this guy and not other arseholes that kill and rape people etc... It's not fair that life takes him at such a crutel time of his life he has 3 young kids and a loving wife. Sometime i wonder whats the point!!
@deezm8. Please watch his full lecture. And then comment again. I think your missing a core point about what the what's fair doesn't mean anything. What matters is what you do with the situation you have.
You know the saying in The Matrix about viruses and humans. I've always found it so right but we got to admit that all humans or humanity or whatever still got so many fascinating things like love, life, wisdom etc. I hope he is at peace in heaven.
Look we're all somebody when life seems forever, and it's easy to have negative feelings towards someone. But it comes to a point, when someone is down to their last breath, you have to see the humanity in them. Humanity is to be human. To be human is to be nothing like anyone else. Whatever happened between the two of you as you claim, the question is, what happened to the humanity in you? With life we show layers; in death we expose our layers. He did that. Compassion!
it's 1:30 am. while working on my petroleum engineering assignment, for company i wanted to hear a voice instead of music . I came upon his last lecture because the title said 'dying speech' and obviously a disturbing title. near the end of his speech, i was curious and googled him only to find out he passed away long ago. How sad to discover such a man who's already gone. I wondered about his family. he kept the tears away, but we the viewer or I couldn't. He reminds me what truly matters
This man was incredibly brave. His courage and strength to face dealth, was a true inspiration. Most people, and I would have prepared my coffin, but he embraced what he had left, and used his time to inspire others. What a kind and giving person. My heart goes out to his chilren and wife. Rest in peace Professor Randy Pausch. You will forever be remembered for your courage and strength.
"Too bad John Coffey from the Green mile couldn`t take the cancer from him and give it to Paris Hilton."
It's hard to understand that someone who seems to be think highly enough of someone like Randy Pausch to watch his videos can at the same time be such a disgrace to humanity. This includes the 27 people who gave a thumbs up for the above comment. It's too bad that Youtube only shows the number of thumbs up for some months now.
These are the words that spring to mind when I watch this video (or other videos with Dr. Pausch and his wife Jai, such as the interview with Diane Sawyer: moving, inspirational, passionate, and thought-provoking. My thoughts go out to his family.
everytime i watch randy pausch's videos it makes me feel a little comforting because my mom has cancer and she only has a few weeks left to live. shes only 49 too and im 17..sometimes i think its unfair until i watched the last lecture and it made me realize that every single second is important in life.
Isn't it ironic that somebody dies who had everything to live for and indeed wished to live, while others live on and on for years and decades of excruciatingly boring, tiresome, and tedious days of empty, sterile existence.
I had heard about the The Last Lecture but did not see it or read about it until I read Cpt Sullenberger's amazing book, Highest Duty. He co-authored it with Jeff Zaslow.
Consequently, I purchased the The Last Lecture and Randy's story moved me to tears. God Bless Jai, Chloe, Logan and Dylan.
Randy, even though I never met you in person, thanks for being an inspiration...

i wonder why this guy went so public about his personal farewell. These messages should have been private cuz they are personal. i guess he made few extra bucks by making himself a celebrity
@bahabdoulaye He died. He didn't make a few extra bucks. He worked to provide for his family in his absence. He didn't set out to become a celebrity, he set out to make a difference in the world, for his family. And to reach out to others and make that same difference for them, because I think he realized that in this world, they are also his family.
when im starting to act like an idiot , taking life for granted again.. i will watch randys lecture. Thanks for showing me the way. rip mr randy pausch
My psychology teacher assigned Randy's book to my class. We all groaned. Reading assignments never receive warm receptions in high school. But then she told us about his story and showed us part of his speech on YouTube. I've never seen a group of students so eager to read. What he left behind is truly a great thing.
This man is a great man. I respect his sayings and the way he fought for his life and wife and children all good people die young and let me tell u Professor Pausch is a great man
he became an accidental celebrity.....but you can see that hes that teacher you liked the most in high school or college, hes the best boss you ever had, it wouldnt have mattered if Randy hadnt done the Last Lecture because those people around him would never forget him, and CMU would honour him for his contribution. I know im thankful that i saw the Last Lecture, even if it was on youtube. I thank God for sharing Randy with us. Rest in Peace Randy, thank YOU
@Dyno86 I remember Randy saying its a teachers responsibility to make learning fun...your mention of that favorite teacher in High School reminded me of that.
this video has changed my life. it shows us that we need to take life for granted. Let ower children live their lifes. Let them be kids. It has really touched my life. Thank you for those words.
This person has changed my live. Its so true when he talks about child hood. We should be like that with ower kids. Let be kids, let them live as kids. Let them live.
Life is not about what we can accumilate as we get to keep nothing, it is about what we give away everyday to those we love and more importantly to those we find it hard to love, Randy gave all that he could to all those he loved and to many he never knew.
We find the meaning of life when we live for a reason that is greater than our self.
Why hasn't The U.S. National Cancer Institute tested Rick Simpson's Cancer Cure Hemp Oil. Is it lack of personnel (2,100 staff members) or limited financial support (2010 budget of $5.1 Billion dollars)!
Professor Pausch found a wonderful way to leave his legacy- to share his life's learnings. Such a precious gift from such a very special human being. Such humility and heartfelt sincerity.
I hope your lesson will live on in the way we all lead our lives. What a shame it would be otherwise...
i always literally cry when I see his last words... there's always hope in his mind... courage... a very good example of a father, a teacher and most importantly, a legacy maker!!!
Yeah He is my mentor. He is the highest mountain, the wisest person. I agree that Last Lecture is the best book ever. It isn't about the book, it's about one special life, which was for all of us. He gave us more than all science. He proved that everyones life can be amazing, no matter how long it's exist. THE BEST WISHES FOR RANDY'S FAMILY. .. and BEST OF ALL FOR HIM wherever he's now.
@florencelovme Because, it's not exploitation. It's a shared expirnece we will all have in common, in time and in some way. Oh, this makes you uncomfortable? Good. Now take that sinking feelling in the pit of your stomache of feeling the potential of your own mortality (hence, why it makes us feel uncomfortable) and do something AMAZING with the time you have in your life..That is the purpose....
@florencelovme He is a living example that you live life to the fullest to the very end. So many people teach you how to get involved in self destructive things all your life and you never ever truly live, but only exist. This is not exploitation and it's not wrong. You yourself just have to adjust your attitude and your perspective on things.

It's a crying shame that we rely on death to remind us how to live.
blingerninja 1 year ago 54
@blingerninja no its not, have you ever heard of the statement "Begin with the end in mind" Death keeps you in check and lets you know to do things now, not later.
mohammedabshaun 5 months ago
@mohammedabshaun But even with that logic, the idea that motivation lies in the knowledge that life will eventually end is depressing. The idea of "living fast, enjoying the moment" becomes overshadowed by the notion that eventually, it will all end. Yes, knowing there is an end sparks motivation, but it's ironic to think "I'm living the happiest life I can because I know sorrow's on the way."
It's like saying "Enjoy that candy right now 'cause tomorrow, I'm pulling all of your teeth."

It's hard to understand that someone who seems to be think highly enough of someone like Randy Pausch to watch his videos can at the same time be such a disgrace to humanity. This includes the 27 people who gave a thumbs up for the above comment. It's too bad that Youtube only shows the number of thumbs up for some months now.

bahabdoulaye 1 year ago
@bahabdoulaye He died. He didn't make a few extra bucks. He worked to provide for his family in his absence. He didn't set out to become a celebrity, he set out to make a difference in the world, for his family. And to reach out to others and make that same difference for them, because I think he realized that in this world, they are also his family.

Life is not about what we can accumilate as we get to keep nothing, it is about what we give away everyday to those we love and more importantly to those we find it hard to love, Randy gave all that he could to all those he loved and to many he never knew.
We find the meaning of life when we live for a reason that is greater than our self.

I dont agree with this exploitation of someone's death.
I see no purpose of it and it should be kept private and personal, not to mention that it makes us very uncomfortable to witness it.
Im sure he was a great professor, but why does he have to put himself and us throught it?
Sorry but No. This is just worng.
florencelovme 1 year ago
@florencelovme Because, it's not exploitation. It's a shared expirnece we will all have in common, in time and in some way. Oh, this makes you uncomfortable? Good. Now take that sinking feelling in the pit of your stomache of feeling the potential of your own mortality (hence, why it makes us feel uncomfortable) and do something AMAZING with the time you have in your life..That is the purpose....
MouthforWar78 1 year ago
@florencelovme He is a living example that you live life to the fullest to the very end. So many people teach you how to get involved in self destructive things all your life and you never ever truly live, but only exist. This is not exploitation and it's not wrong. You yourself just have to adjust your attitude and your perspective on things.
