  • This song is really soothing.

  • Every movement of every Beethoven sonata is a masterpiece. But then there are movements like this one, for which the word 'masterpiece' is simply inadequate . . .

  • ah those adagios of beethoven...magical. amazing interpretation. hats off.

  • 4 people accidentally hit the wrong button!

  • @hungrylittlepuppy a faulty but honest error.

  • @hungrylittlepuppy

  • I thought the first and second movement were boring, but Mr. Kempff makes them both sound very powerful and additive songs.

  • who the fuck dislikes this? seriously

  • @CorporateAllianceAus 4 Lang Lang fans..

  • XD ........

  • @konstantinoupianist what is lang lang lol?

  • @animegalc4 If I am right, Lang Lang is a chinese pianist.

  • Initially one almost thinks he is blind, but he seems to be hearing the notes without looking totally at the key board! Amazing! Tremendous! Greatness viewed in person!

  • pretty standard after a couple of years of solid practice and correct technique training

  • i don't fell any thing related to the mvt1. may be he feel. if yes: it is like a girl hangout in her first time & go wildly in the days after. the mvt3 is the time she own the bad girl title.

  • Wow,I think someday I'll still cry listening to Beethoven's music

  • Someone said on an earlier post, that Beethoven's sonatas go from amazing to amazing to amazing... thats exactly right, and the easiest way to put it...

  • its obvious that he can see the sound...

  • Comment removed

  • i almost cried, the first time i heard the second mvt. because of how beautiful it was.

  • I find it interesting that Kempff pedals the broken octaves, most pianists do not.

  • @Jolteon206 i find it interesting that you are

  • Not bad for an old man.

  • his face is like one of a peacock

  • I THOUGHT HE WAS BLIND AND DEAF

  • @cactuskid007 nope just Parkinson's. like that dude from back to the future

  • If this aired today, a great title would be “Wilhelm Kempff unplugged”. Unfortunately, performances such as this are not customary today.

  • It's beethoven taking control of kempff wath we are listening, transmiting his feelings

    words can't describe it!

  • This is better than Barenboim!

  • I wished he was still alive, than i could go to his concerts .. i think he was a verry great man ..

  • @Marjohke he is still alive moron

  • @kg6iif he died in 1991 moron

  • Hey, quit the name-calling. Yes, it is true that he died in 1991. No reason to call each other morons.

  • @hezhenbang It's 1990 moron

  • Hey, quit the name-calling. Yes, it is true that he died in 1991. No reason to call each other morons.

  • este movimiento me parece mucho más apacible, sereno, no feliz pero si calmado, en parte esperanzado, como un niño... muy fresco... muy bueno ^__^

  • dat chic on the audience looks fine

  • ..not anymore though

  • Man you're an expert on aging : )

  • i like this mvt. the best. and wilhelm kempff plays it jusst beautiful

  • does anyone know how hard it is to read piano music? cause i would absolutely love to learn Beethoven and Chopin.. i would just really love it

  • how long have you been learning piano?

  • lol...depends on the person and how easy of a learner you are. It also takes coordination to especially to play pieces by Chopin and Beethoven. First you mut learn to read music which may take a year of constant work. Once you learn to read it you can start learning these pieces. I learned hard pieces not too long after I learned how to read music. My first "hard" pieces was Fur Elise by Beethoven. It isn't that hard though but its pretty. I suggest that..then I went to Moonlight Sonata 1.

  • its pretty hard...its like learning another language

  • If it's Chopin, it's usually hard, to really hard. But if you don't know reading piano musics... you'll play like shit sure, because with Chopin the most hard isn't to read his partitions, but to have the technic to play it.

Generally, Beethoven is easyer I think (it depends of course of the partitions, don't compare moonlight sonata 1st mvt to 3rd mvt, with Chopin it's the same thing).

  • I love this guy. Wish he was my grandfather to teach me :)

  • @mephisto66773 Yeah Wilhelm is my fricken hero. I just think its awesome how he gets really into the piece you know?

  • @mephisto66773 he actually died in either 1991 or 1995

  • @mephisto66773 he actually died in either 1991 or 1995 at the age of 95 he was 75 in this one I think lol

  • @afgdrbhyz he died in 1991...

  • @mephisto66773 I sometimes think of things like that too.!

  • @mephisto66773 You can find someone with the same passion to teach you for $40 an hour on craigslist.

  • @FCKEVRY1 -_- not with the same musical ability...

  • @FCKEVRY1 with the same musical ability as long as any beginner is concerned.

  • @MattTheOak best comment ever

  • Klasse Interpretation !!!

  • Thank you very much for your efforts. I cannot see how you are the first classic repetoire compiler I would be subscribed to yet I am happy that quandry has been eliminated.

  • I rated it 5 starts before the video ever started.

  • For those who live near Berlin, Germany: it may be well worth their while to go listen to a piano recital by Manfred Reuthe. He is out of the school of Paumgartner and took master classes with Kempff when he was young, together with Detlef Kraus.

  • I used to take my kids to hear this, when they were very young. they'd love the first part, sleep through the middle and wake up again for the 3rd. I was happy when they were...

  • To my mind this guy is the ideal candidate for Beethoven except Beethoven himself.

    ***** for this!

  • I'm surprised that he actually managed to get anything written that wasn't more than a few lines long without giving up. I wonder how many rooms his ideas that didn't pan out would fill...

  • The crossover at 1:58 actually made me laugh ^_^

  • Is it the recording or is the piano out of tune? Very well played though..

  • The recording is from 1968 in Paris. If it is from a television show I don't know what system they utilized then (at one time they had a SECAM based system with more than 800 lines). I suspect it's black and white film though.

  • i have to write a paper on sonata and i still don't get the moves that everyone is talkin bout

  • I've noticed that alot about beethoven's sonata's, how they go from sad (mvmt 1) to happy (2) to mad (3).. Pretty cool

  • True. Many of them do have this "progression".

  • i don't think this movement is a happy one... it's "intimo", it's closer to the soul than to the stomach, as for example the first one seems to be opposite. I think you need this second movement after the explosive first one.

  • hehehe, that is how a sonata is usually composed haha. Check out some other composers pieces

  • apparently, he was bipolar

  • Apparently he is attuned to his instrument and a master of piano expression. Please LISTEN,

  • Beethoven was bipolar..supposedly.

  • So is steadfastcoward. What does this have to do with the price of Brittney Spears in China exactly? All the cats still jam with Ludwig VonBee.

  • I hope you still realize you're not making sense.

  • I see plenty here. And your asking me to look up trailer babes who aren't even A-list trailer babes and jam my inbox, even though the nearest one is in Dickinson, North Dakota and should go hit on one of my distant relatives not but down the street...

Not everybody enjoys music from Bach to Jello Biafra. I'll try to cut you some slack but lay off the dead pianist. In his day he was loved,

  • Never said anything bad about him. Do you happen to be socially retarded?

  • By the way, nobody appreciated an ostentatious douche bag.

  • Americans want douchebags with a low cost and in quantity. Why are you asking a 43 year old single male about this?

Alice Cooper would not be amused, by the way.

  • Alice Cooper's biggest hits are not only BALLADS, the LP they came from was a tribute to his favorite singer, Frank Sinatra.

    Live what you want, mosdomo.

  • @Demonstrator1 no they dont grow up

  • @Demonstrator1 i have also noticed a lot about his sonata's. you know, how they go from amazing, to amazing, to amazing. pretty cool

  • @Demonstrator1 I know, I love that

  • @Demonstrator1

    a lot

    two words

    learn it

  • haha BAM

  • @Demonstrator1 thats not specific to Beethoven's sonatas, thats just the structure of the sonata form. and 3 isnt 'mad' its a rondo, it doesnt sound 'mad' at all. the rondo part of any sonata is always faster, and more lively.

  • @augustina0 ur right, and if uve heard his moonlight sonata u no

  • @Demonstrator1 think about how he sat there and wrote it. He probably sad down because he was down about something, and as he progressed through the first movement, he became happy with it, setting the stage for the second movement. As he kept playing through the second movement, he remembered what he was sad about to begin with in the first movement and probably got pissed about it, hence the third movement. The last movements are usually longer cause he jus got more and more mad about whatever

  • He's a music machine. The way he feels what he plays is incredible. These videos make the music more enjoyable.

  • amazing touch .

the piano just sing and sing ........

  • Si alguna vez Beethoven elevó una plegaria al cielo, fue sin duda, a través de sus adagios y demás movimientos lentos (segundos movimientos) de sonatas, conciertos y sinfonías

  • Beautiful playing.

  • This is brilliant playing, but it's a shame about the obsession with Kempff's face, which has lead to some blatant modifying of the original footage. There are passages where the music is clearly detached from the footage by quite a few bars (note where the left hand takes the treble on page 1). True, we do occasionally see his hands playing exactly what we hear, but I think there's been quite a bit of editing here.

  • I agree, there is a lot of editing here, but really, we're here for the music, not the editing :D

  • I think it is fundamentally wrong to separate and reedit the two. Who are they to decide which expressions should go with which parts? It is patronising and artless and I think we are perfectly capable of appreciating his playing best without their fruitless modifications.

  • The editing is an insult, and I wonder if it was just done for that. I do not need to be prevented from watching the expressions in his face, who does the editor think he, or she, is ? ?

  • I feel emotion is imparted into the music. Even if they edit his facial features, the music he created stays untouched, injected with his passion...this you can feel, and no editing can erase that.

  • To be perfectly honest, I'm wondering whether this is the original live recording at all. He plays note perfect right through, and the interpretation sounds identical with my Deutche Grammophone studio recording that I bought many years ago. So I think it's possible that someone has matched up the two, either that or the original DG recording was recorded in front of a live audience, but I'm almost certain it wasn't as there are no ambient sounds and no applause.

  • It's quite obvious this is a studio recording. It's why the first movement video has the music begin before he starts playing in the video, and the video jumps forward to catch up. The audio has just been matched up with the video. However, the fact that he is playing in the video exactly in sync with the music- shows how perfectly he was playing it on both occasions. Masterful job of playing, as well as of video editing :)

  • What we might have called the "AM radio" or "American Bandstand" version?

I must assume this was edited for a television show, and they do get sloppy?

  • There is no ugly in this, it is the most beautiful and yet memorable piece. Also the pianist is perfect with every music sheet he get I really want to be just like him in 20 to 30 years and that will be my goal.

  • i discovered that this movement is actually harder than it seems... because of its relatively slow tempo, you can hear every wrong note you play, unbalanced loudness of the chords... you have to really concentrate.

  • wow that is so true lol.

  • Actually this is my favourite part of this sonata :)))

  • Kempff was the best pianist of 20th century

  • Certainly he was one of the best. I couldn't leave out Rubinstein and Horowitz, though. Subjective, of course. ;^)

  • Alas, let us not forget that the glorious human race spawned but more than one musical genre. Do not forget Art Tatum, even though he wasnt of the 'classical, romantic, baroque' form.

  • Someone's been watching too much Everwood.

  • What is Everwood?

  • @steadfastcoward

Everwood is a show that used to be on WB. It follows a family of three, focusing primarily on the father, a former neurosurgeon, and the son, a piano prodigy.

  • Thanks for the refresher. Knew the name but I've never seen the show.

  • absolutly wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lal, please people dont embarrass yourself by trying to talk German, you talk complete crap.

Das kommt einfach davon, wenn jeder diese scheiß Internet-Übersetzungs-Dinger nimmt -.-

  • ich bin ein berliner

  • Really?You're a jelly donut?

  • lol. vielleicht benutzen diese Leute "diese scheiß Internet-Übersetzungs-Dinger" nicht; vielleicht können sie einfach Deutsch nicht gut sprechen.

  • This is simply beautiful, bravo!

  • Kempff brings the pieces of Beethoven to life, enough said.

    *sits back and enjoys*

  • Kempff is soooo AMAZING!!!!

The Best BEETHOVEN Player 4 EVER!!!!!!!!

  • Tears rolling down my face ..

    This piece is so emotional

    you cannot be moved

  • Perfect.

  • Do you have Opus 54?

  • Thank you.

  • somebody derailed the audio/visual before 3 min, video is about a bar and a half ahead of audio until 3.43 ...would have been nice to see his fingers

    what an incredible, musical soul

  • Beautiful

  • It truly does take a mater to play another master's masterpiece just right.

This is amazingly beautiful and has been a great help. :)

    All hail Kempff!

  • anyone knows where I can get this dvd and what it is called?

    thanks... it's amazing!

  • What we see here is a man that does not only understand music, he also understands Beethovens style and how to use his personal charisma.. A great performer indeed

  • This is how the piano should be played.

He makes it seem joyful to play, he has not just memorized some notes. He lives it, every line. Amazing.

  • plays as though he`s in heaven,,, such a peaceful performance.

  • sir what the hell are you talking about
