I would hate to be so myopic that I can't appreciate anything different: check out Ruby Turner's version, or, for you Brit blues fans, Christine Perfects cut. A great song not only can, but should have other renditions. True, some singers can shred, but others can elevate or take a tasty tangent - I can listen to 6 versions of this song in a row and not get tired : I can't listen to Etta (or anyone) do it 6 times in a row.
I'm not saying other versions shouldn't be recorded or have no merit, but don't come here saying Beyonce's pretty-but-souless version is better. Beyonce is a good singer, however she does not have the right voice to convincingly sing the blues. Her voice is light, clear as a bell with a youthful, girlish tone. This youthful quality and her style of singing don't convey the lyrics convincingly and putting across lyrics with emotion is the essence of Blues singing.

Etta James (EJ) is a true artist and Beyoncé Knowles (BK) is a commercial artist. EJs version is edgy, raw and, has duende. BKs version is managed and rehearsed and put together just enough to gratify masses. The first time i heard this song was on the movie cadillac records, and to me, after hearing the oringinal, it almost doesnt even sound like the same song. Beyonce put her own swing on it and did beautifully but Etta brings the soul and pain to the song. And its true......most singers today dont know what it means to sing with soul. I have not met or heard of any SOUL singer like Miss Etta and the other Legends in today's music. With the exception of Christina Aguilera of course. So far Christina is the only singer I've known who can sing with pure soul and emotion.

Reading some of the comments about style over substance I feel I have to point out some (but the minority) of todays stars are driven by the market forces! Some of them are actually very talented I'm thinking about the voice of Chritina Aguillera which is fantastic when applied to the right songs, but would not sell many records for her.

Us 40 year olds do also download music, but my point was my children are not exposed to anything but market driven music except by me, who plays it constantly in the faintest hope they will share my enthusiasm unfortunately I'm still battling the record moguls who flog decent talent to death without exploring their sometimes evident talent.
I listen to a vast array of music and this is probably my favorite song of all the genres I listen to. I've heard some fantastic covers but Etta nails it!

I thank her for bringing etta back to life, for there were a lot of people whom did not know her or her music. If you dont like either version, then dont listen to it. my favorite songs by Etta are "Fool That I Am" and "Trust in Me". I think Dinah did them b4 her. To the younger folks, you'd be surprised that your "originals" are not . It was the same with my generation. I found out by looking at old movies and listening to older relative's collections, that my ORIGINALS were actually new renditions. That's the Music Business. I'm not a RAP fan by any means, but it started out as an expression of real life. That's what's missing today in music.

You all must understand Beyonce just portrayed Etta in the movie. She never said she was a "blues singer". So of course she not going to sing exactly like her but she does sound good singing these songs anyway. Beyonce is in her 20's- Etta's is 71 yrs old so of course there's a different. Beyonce is not trying to compete with Etta but you all got to admit, she brought Etta back to life cause b4 Cadiillar Records came out, you didn't hear 1 word about Etta........

No doubt. It all started with Billie Holiday for me. The way artists like Billie Holiday, Etta James, Nina Simone and others sing is so sincere and true. They put so much thought into what they are singing. Today the biggest with lyrics is how many notes can fit in a syllable (yes YOU Christina Aguilera). Just pisses me off when young people are completely ignorant to any music produced before 1990 (and that's being generous). Thanks for posting, I'm glad you agree!

I would hate to be so myopic that I can't appreciate anything different: check out Ruby Turner's version, or, for you Brit blues fans, Christine Perfects cut. A great song not only can, but should have other renditions. True, some singers can shred, but others can elevate or take a tasty tangent - I can listen to 6 versions of this song in a row and not get tired : I can't listen to Etta (or anyone) do it 6 times in a row.

I'm not saying other versions shouldn't be recorded or have no merit, but don't come here saying Beyonce's pretty-but-souless version is better. Beyonce is a good singer, however she does not have the right voice to convincingly sing the blues. Her voice is light, clear as a bell with a youthful, girlish tone. This youthful quality and her style of singing don't convey the lyrics convincingly and putting across lyrics with emotion is the essence of Blues singing.

Its all about the duende and Etta has it, Beyoncé never will. If you do not know what it is, look it up the spanish poet Garcia Lorca best explains the idea. Etta James (EJ) is a true artist and Beyoncé Knowles (BK) is a commercial artist. EJs version is edgy, raw and, has duende. BKs version is managed and rehearsed and put together just enough to gratify masses. The blues is simple yet difficult i.e. the talent lies in the ability artist to make something very simple interesting.

The first time i heard this song was on the movie cadillac records, and to me, after hearing the oringinal, it almost doesnt even sound like the same song. Beyonce put her own swing on it and did beautifully but Etta brings the soul and pain to the song. And its true......most singers today dont know what it means to sing with soul. They sound nice but there is no life or meaning behind their words.

I have not met or heard of any SOUL singer like Miss Etta and the other Legends in today's music. With the exception of Christina Aguilera of course. So far Christina is the only singer I've known who can sing with pure soul and emotion.

I guess allstatebass was born in the wrong years and did not listen to real soul and blues. When you think of real soul and blues singers with real and genuine singing voices then Beyonce comes a poor last. I have a feeling that B gets this old school stuff from her mother. she has a great mentor. I think that is where she gets much of her direction. I am sure that for a good amount of time she was locked away in some room somewhere listening to those legends like Etta , Ella, Chaka and practicing her vocals using their music. Look at the song that she did for the Austin Powers movie and the Get Me Bodied choreography is from the 70's

Reading some of the comments about style over substance I feel I have to point out some (but the minority) of todays stars are driven by the market forces! Some of them are actually very talented I'm thinking about the voice of Chritina Aguillera which is fantastic when applied to the right songs, but would not sell many records for her.
