  • R.I.P. True Legend

  • R.I.P. ETTA JAMES WE LOVE YOU <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

  • Rest in peace etta james

  • As I learned today of Etta's death, my heart hurts. She personified all the pain i ever felt in a way

that was inimitable. She will be sorely missed. God bless you miss Etta. I hope you're in that

heavenly choir of those who have gone on to the Church Triumphant before us; i.e., Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Mahiah (sp) Jackson, et al. She was and is incredible!!!!

  • R.I.P. u will be missed

  • R.I.H. Ms. James, we will miss you!

  • My favorite....r.I.p.

  • A legend she was ... R I P Etta.

  • I'd rather go blind...drink muddy water and sleep on a hollow log ! R.I.P. Etta !!!

  • Damn .. R.i.p

  • People who think other versions are equal or superior to Etta are not acknowledging that the other versions would not exist without her. Etta is the only who can say "here is a song I wrote".

  • Saw her at local blues fest a few years ago,she had to sit while performing as BB King does now but let me tell you this song put a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye a rare thing of art,of beauty that you can only feel blessed to experience.

  • no real need for the story-telling photos. But thanks for posting this. Peace

  • Gabby sucks sick for dope

  • Chess ... some story

  • Well, one thing I can agree w/ you all on is that Etta had more "soul" in this song!!! When you listen to it, you can feel more of an emotion on Etta's version compared to Beyonce's version!! Beyonce has a beautiful voice and she song it well but Etta can make you feel it!!

  • sang honey

  • Wundervoller Song ! Das Video viel Herzblut ! Danke

  • OMG PPL you need to stop compareing beyonce or anybody to etta! u ruining the song with those senseless comments, just enjoy ettas voice!

  • poor Etta has Alzheimer's disease... that saddened me deeply.

  • the most beautiful two chords ever

  • i can't stop listening to this song and I can't s top crying either.

  • @mmwtbs it's been constantly on my mind to, just playing in my head.

  • MAGNIFICENT!

  • You want to know about Etta and the Blues... listen to her album Blues To The Bone...made when she was 70. The emotion and soul in her voice is like no other.

No one better than the Lady Etta...all fall short before Etta's talents.

  • Unspeakable with very sad to see it in real world

  • @bakbraker2001 most reasonable person on YouTube.

  • No disrespect 2 Etta fans but Beyonce sung it better 2 me.

  • Great live version of "I'd Rather Go Blind"...for an incredible studio version "Deep In The Night" has that stunning five minute version that makes your hair stand on end...the lady can sing!!!

  • best version i have heard , play it over an over ;)

  • BEYONCE PROVED TO ME SHE COULD REALLY ACT IN THE MOVIE

    SHE WAS FABULOUS

    AND ETTA IS wooow

  • Etta , Etta , Etta ... soul felt song from a solid babe

  • This is a great song but the fade ending is disappointing.

  • Sorry to hear of Etta's illness

  • love this clip...well done...love people inspired by others talent...brings more talent

  • ew .

dont compare beyonce to etta .

    Etta is far to superior

  • @HappyKCDay

true. beyonce could 'rather go bling'. and that's on a good day.

  • I love me some Etta James!!!

  • let our lips curl, even when our eyes say different.

  • This song...ay what can I say....pulls at my heartstrings, the gut wrentching feeling of having your heart torn out, to see someone you love, let you go for another...

  • that your sentences made me cry..coz that happened to me...

  • I CRYED WITH THISS SONgg.

  • thats obidos at 1:30

  • u aint lien

  • Actually :) Rod tried to record it but I reckon he failed miserably but that's only my opinion :)

  • From Wikipedia.

  • When you look at the movie, try to learn from the mistakes that those artists made in their lives. I would go even further to say that Ms. Etta is a hypocrite for the comment that she made about Beyonce, when she(Etta) gave Beyonce permission to do all that she did in the movie.Obviously she has not matured, and she is still living of the world. The both of them are great in their own way. People, wake up! Don't be jealous of someone, because GOD doesn't want us to envy, nor hate one another.

  • I dont agree Etta Probably gave Beyonce the rights to Play her and sing her songs ON SET once the movie was over Beyonce had NO right performing Ms.Etta's song At Last for President Obama...So I feel Etta has every right to be mad..Beyonce should have sung one of her own songs.

  • well if u think abput it that wasn't really etta james song somebody sand this song before her she was the seconf person to bring this song out not the first.

  • Thank you for posting that. It does not BELONG to etta. Beyonce paid to get that movie out and recorded her own version of the song as well as the other artist. With all respect to ms. james, she can not perform like she used to. Go to her website and listen to her recent albums and you will see what I'm talking about. They wanted someone who could deliver the song, and Beyonce did just that.

  • at last was not originallly song by etta james anyways so no she dont have the right to be mad she was just hating the song was first song by glen miller it just was more popular whent etta sang it so dont try to do beyonce u bitch

  • Comment removed

  • settle gretel....you know life is bigger than someone doing a cover...don't understand your anger....songs are to be sung....no matter if it is better or worse..so long as they are remembered..that is the grace ...calm baby...calm...Beyonce aint no ones enemy!

  • and etta aint doing Beyonce....the time line don't go backwards fool...only forward...Etta did all of it first before Beyonce...so she can't doooo Beyonce....Beyonce wouldn't have had a character or a song to sing in Cadillac Records had Etta never been.

  • i was talkin bout the person who wrote the comment u stupid bitch so dont try to do me fucker

  • the reality bookshitter....is you're barely literate to begin with, so you might want to go back to those bookshitters again hey...oh and btw...too late bookshitter, you and your kind were already done a long time ago so I needn't worry about doing you bookshitter.....have a nice day now bookshitter...bit of calm now you might burst something and that would be just messy..don't ya think???

  • @ImMary08 obung hole is a complete dissapointment !

and I wish boyonce' were smarter than to buy into Obumma's policy's.. I would never sing for that idiot man child scammer thug

  • @leapinlulu dont fucking talk about our president u fuckin prick

    gamagan1

  • All these opinions about who did it better. Why? At the end of the day what have you accomplished with your opinion. What you may think of beyonce really doesnt matter. I thank her for bringing etta back to life, for there were a lot of people whom did not know her or her music. If you dont like either version, then dont listen to it. Learn to appreciate all thats good in this world, and quit spreading hatred. Each 1 teach 1 so this world can be a better place.

  • Look up Rod Stewart and the Faces version. They do a commendable job.

  • I'm sorry but....I heard both versions and this version doesn't seem that great to me. It's almost like country, it kinda puts me to sleep but in Beyonce;s version I hear way more emotion and sorrow...

  • my favorite songs by Etta are "Fool That I Am" and "Trust in Me". I think Dinah did them b4 her. To the younger folks, you'd be surprised that your "originals" are not . It was the same with my generation. I found out by looking at old movies and listening to older relative's collections, that my ORIGINALS were actually new renditions. That's the Music Business. I'm not a RAP fan by any means, but it started out as an expression of real life. That's what's missing today in music.

  • Does anyone remember who sang this song before Etta? Jackie Moore keeps coming to mind, but I can't remember.

  • I'd Rather Go Blind is an R&B song written by Ellington Jordan and co-credited to Billy Foster. It was first recorded by Etta James in 1969. It has since been recorded by Clarence Carter, Little Milton, Chicken Shack, Koko Taylor, Rod Stewart, B.B. King, Paul Weller, Ruby Turner, Sydney Youngblood and Beyoncé Knowles for the Cadillac Records Soundtrack.

  • EJ Rocks...

  • this is the most beautiful rendition...I've got tears...thanks for posting this

  • oh man I am just lovin this cut.Brilliant to hear her live - feelin it big time.

Beyounce's version is ok but you really can't compare the two. How could you - Etta came first and when she sings you feel it.

  • You all must understand Beyonce just portrayed Etta in the movie. She never said she was a "blues singer". So of course she not going to sing exactly like her but she does sound good singing these songs anyway. Beyonce is in her 20's- Etta's is 71 yrs old so of course there's a different. Beyonce is not trying to compete with Etta but you all got to admit, she brought Etta back to life cause b4 Cadiillar Records came out, you didn't hear 1 word about Etta........

  • when you say that you never heard word 1 from etta before this movie two things to remember , one look at the date on this video it was made long before the movie , two it had 45 000 views before the movie , so sorry but Etta fans are still out there in large numbers

  • Yeah that!!

  • @tovasdad YEA BOI!

  • @jovta22 totally agree.

  • @jovta22 Subtle correction. YOU didn't hear 1 word about Etta --- most likely cuz folks today think the stupidest crip crap snap your fingers kindergarten tune is real music and don't bother to find out what the originals of all these shit remixes sound like.

  • @jovta22 Yes mam!! you are absolutely right! However, real conisouers of Music. Know this woman. Etta put the stank on this song. It's good and hold true...I wish we had discovered it before "Cadilac Records." Peace to you Jovta22!

  • @jovta22 thanks to THE MOVIE i found out there was more then rod stewart s version (my favorite) all my respect to Etta , beyonce, keep shakin that ass !!!!!!

  • @jovta22 you are so right Beyonce was just making us remember a great person that many may have forgotton

  • @jovta22 , how do you know what she was thinking, but Etta express her feelings about her, that's a fact, so you don't know what went through, but Etta is Etta, like you said Beyonce just portrayed Etta, remember back than, there was no electronic equipment to keep then in tune, you either had it or not a voice, today I can sing off tune and fix on protools and you'll never know, so, I rest my case, Mr tovasdad tks for the video.

  • class act

  • Just beautiful! Thanks!

  • this is not the original. this is a concert live one.

  • ya that's what makes it so good is that it is live no studio magic just pure raw talent long live Etta

  • Really , no I mean really Etta's seems sooooo much more soulful

  • hah you must be JOKIN friend. this is REAL soul!

  • i'm glad you recognized that the hate would begin, lol.. cuz u already know you crazy. :-P

  • This comment is a perfect representation of why I denounce my entire generation....singers who have looks more than voices and more artificial enhancement on their vocals than they do in their bras. They wouldn't know REAL soul if it bitch slapped them, and then the worst: the people in my age bracket that eat up the marketing and think Beyonce is in the same universe with Etta...send me back to 1945 to hear a Billie Holiday show because I can't take this stupidity anymore!!

  • amen brother!

  • `Bro... Sis... I'm glad you wrote this... cause this song-.... all the songs those days... they were real music... foul of soul... full of emotions... I don't know but... It simply can't be compared... Etta's performance... her singing can not be compared to anyone... no way no way... She's got that thing that makes you love her music!!!

  • No doubt. It all started with Billie Holiday for me. The way artists like Billie Holiday, Etta James, Nina Simone and others sing is so sincere and true. They put so much thought into what they are singing. Today the biggest with lyrics is how many notes can fit in a syllable (yes YOU Christina Aguilera). Just pisses me off when young people are completely ignorant to any music produced before 1990 (and that's being generous). Thanks for posting, I'm glad you agree!

  • I would hate to be so myopic that I can't appreciate anything different: check out Ruby Turner's version, or, for you Brit blues fans, Christine Perfects cut. A great song not only can, but should have other renditions. True, some singers can shred, but others can elevate or take a tasty tangent - I can listen to 6 versions of this song in a row and not get tired : I can't listen to Etta (or anyone) do it 6 times in a row.

  • I'm not saying other versions shouldn't be recorded or have no merit, but don't come here saying Beyonce's pretty-but-souless version is better. Beyonce is a good singer, however she does not have the right voice to convincingly sing the blues. Her voice is light, clear as a bell with a youthful, girlish tone. This youthful quality and her style of singing don't convey the lyrics convincingly and putting across lyrics with emotion is the essence of Blues singing.

  • this live version is a find! where did you find this?

this is among the best of etta's songs, and among my all time favorite love songs ever. so far, i haven't even listened to the beyonce version. i try to be open-minded, but i mean, come on.

  • I got it of the album "blues like it is " live from Austin

  • no offence to Etta but Beyonce' killed that song but we still have to be thankful because if she wouldnt have made the song Beyonce' wouldn't have been able to re-make it so give thanks to both

  • now that i hear the original, i still think beyonce did a good job.

  • they have two different styles so for somebody to say beyonce wants to be like her is juss ignortant n immature...beyonce killed it and so did etta jones there both great artist...see the movie wonderful

  • Lord ha' mercy.

  • Its all about the duende and Etta has it, Beyoncé never will. If you do not know what it is, look it up the spanish poet Garcia Lorca best explains the idea. Etta James (EJ) is a true artist and Beyoncé Knowles (BK) is a commercial artist. EJs version is edgy, raw and, has duende. BKs version is managed and rehearsed and put together just enough to gratify masses. The blues is simple yet difficult i.e. the talent lies in the ability artist to make something very simple interesting.

  • Here is a little except from GL writings on the duende

Lorca writes: "The duende, then, is a power, not a work. It is a struggle, not a thought. I have heard an old maestro of the guitar say, 'The duende is not in the throat; the duende climbs up inside you, from the soles of the feet.' Meaning this: it is not a question of ability, but of true, living style, of blood, of the most ancient culture, of spontaneous creation."

  • That whole Beyonce' portraying Queen Etta thing was like a bad dream,I can't wake up from. She will NEVER be able to fill EJ's shoes.

  • iont think beyonce wants to fill the bitch shoes.

  • i agree

  • Jeez, excuse me but the person who put this video together for us to enjoy deserves a hard and heavy slap on the back. You did a really, really good job, so thank you for making such a magnificent song so much more enjoyable....

  • your very welcome woonsocketrocket

  • MsButerfly, sweetheart, you said the two words that best discribe Queen Etta and this song-soul and pain....it doesn't get any more soulful or painful then this. This song live, will make you cry !! I've seen her and I did..

  • The first time i heard this song was on the movie cadillac records, and to me, after hearing the oringinal, it almost doesnt even sound like the same song. Beyonce put her own swing on it and did beautifully but Etta brings the soul and pain to the song. And its true......most singers today dont know what it means to sing with soul. They sound nice but there is no life or meaning behind their words.

  • in my opinon beyonce cant sing great at all she is just ok and etta james did very well

  • more speaking than singing and she sounds a little like a bloke... but I guess she did write it so fair play, beautiful song!

  • This song was written by Ellington Jordan and Billy Foster

  • if any can give me some depressing songs, like this, it would be much appreciated. i don't mind if its post 2000 or not

    but pleaseeeeeeeeeee

NB no Mary J. Blige please

  • Rod Stewart and The Faces absolutely killed this joint- they do it live better than anyone else. Etta even had to give him props for it...

  • I have not met or heard of any SOUL singer like Miss Etta and the other Legends in today's music. With the exception of Christina Aguilera of course. So far Christina is the only singer I've known who can sing with pure soul and emotion.

  • You must live a very sheltered life

  • Why? Because I don't find much of today's music soulful? I like music of today, I jam to music that sounds good to me. I just don't think any of them have any real meaning to them.

  • I guess allstatebass was born in the wrong years and did not listen to real soul and blues. When you think of real soul and blues singers with real and genuine singing voices then Beyonce comes a poor last. Also soul and blues was born out of repression and the depression something Ms Beyonce has forgotten about. Music must mean and say something about what is happnening in the world. To say to a starving boy in the third world that my bootie is bigger than yours does not cut it.

  • Beyonce is no where near as good as Etta James or any other soul goddess of the past. Blues and souls singers from the 60s 70s 80s had voices that R&B singers can only dream off. Also they used their voices to do the singing not their vanity. So long live Soul and Blues and down with the inferior rest.

  • Beyonce is so far superior it's ridiculous.

  • not really beyonce had much training.....etta is straight soul and gospel something you cant find....but on the recording beyonce did good pitch wise but not soul wise

  • ok, i'll give you that. But, of course you won't find gospel and soul listening to POP music. you have to stretch your legs a bit and maybe listen to some gospel ans soul music....lord forbid.

  • you also have to remember this is live no studio magic just a raw live performance most performers today couldn't do that

  • ur right, but B can.

  • Exactly these kids aint up on it they dont know shit about good music.

  • I have a feeling that B gets this old school stuff from her mother. she has a great mentor. I think that is where she gets much of her direction. I am sure that for a good amount of time she was locked away in some room somewhere listening to those legends like Etta , Ella, Chaka and practicing her vocals using their music. Look at the song that she did for the Austin Powers movie and the Get Me Bodied choreography is from the 70's

  • Im sorry,,,,, i love etta version but Beyonces was better...

  • Yeah people need to stop being a beyonce hater and give the chick her props. When beyonce sing i get chills cause she really did put ALOT ALOT ALOT emotion into the song.

  • we are not hating beyonce just tired of people bashing Etta look at the date on this video it was made a year and a half ago so it is safe to say I am not a band wagon fan that does this because of the movie I have been an etta fan for years so I am not dising beyonce I am simply stating that to many of us WE ARE ETTA FANS and as such we will always prefer Etta so we don't understand why some one would go on an etta vid and dis her

  • Thats understandable but if somebody come in here not hearing etta sing it after Beyonce they gonna think "yeah beyonce was better". In my "ears" beyonce killed it cause how strong her voice is. Plus i don't think people came in here to bash/dis etta. Like me they probably wanted to hear the original and see if it sounded better than beyonce.

  • which it does.. like, times ten. lol.

  • I still sayin beyonce did a good ass job. Everybody music taste is different that's why i don't even take what people say to heart. im not about to sit here trynna change somebody opinion about beyonce of etta. i give them both props but beyonce just nailed the hell outta that song CHILLLLLSSSSSS

  • ...

    You spell like a retard.

Thus proving that Beyonce (Is that a name? good god.) is only encouraging stupidity.

  • She also can not sing.

  • Beyonce did a better job that Etta???? Listen people there were two singers that epitomized Rythm & blues before Mr. Jerry Wexler changed the chandre to that name, their names are Ms. Ruth Brown and the incomparable Ms. Etta james, o.k. That's it. You have black people walking around today Hey Jeff who's Etta James?????? Game's over that's it.

    Sybenett-

Who's Etta James, I'll be Dammmed.

  • Sybenett: Yeah, Ruth Brown is great. Of course, Etta James also. I had to comment since you brought up Ruth Brown. Everyone, give these ladies a listen.

  • ya we do look at music different we like it raw uncontrived not over engineered substance over style not that Beyonce isn't a good performer But to many of us the original Is the best and as far as giving props 50 years in the industry dam that almost impossible that's 25 YEARS longer than Madonna

  • beyonce was better....but this song was a great base to start from...very good performance but not my first choice of old school music to listen to...

  • sorry but I would disagree there is so much emotion in this Etta can never be duplicated

  • Wait a damn minute. I know that Beyonce is sittin on top of the world right now...but lets be serious.. She's no Etta , Chaka, Pattie, Ella... and so many more that really did the damn. It's ok to give Bey credit, but please don't take credit for those who have paved the way. Bey on some pop bubble gum music. ... Ladies like Etta sang from the soul.... If it wasn't for Etta, Bey wouldn't a had a role in the damn movie...so Please ...don't get it twisted.

  • Very good point!

  • I love this song so much. I have to be honest, I hadn't heard this until Beyonce sang it in the movie...and I cried. lol This is so beautiful.

  • this is more than good

  • Whew! She just blows you away on this song.

  • yuu go blind

  • wow i love this song very beautiful and powerful

  • Etta was a tough woman who lived hard. Every emotion in this song is real because she lived it. That is why she'll be remembered when todays lightweights fade into nothing.

  • Etta James is the best. If you think this is a great song (which it is)you should listen to her song "At Last". She does it alone, and then listen to the one she does with Dr. John.Fantastic.

  • you should also listen to respect yourself the live version it is one of my favorite Etta James tunes and thanks for commenting truenorth55

  • sing it baby

  • etta james waz at the doctors with me at riverside com.

  • Old and New, if not for the old there would be nothing new. Etta is Christina's best friend. Both are great vocalist but only one endured the plight of the separatist ideology of pre civil rights act, don't forget the white only water fountain and schools! EVER!!

  • thank you for the post eissa321 and you are absolutely right it is hard to believe that in my life time it went from segregation and African American people not being allowed to vote to having a African America President It makes me very proud of how far we have come as a society

  • Great song! I would love to hear the rest of the concert. What album is it from so I can buy it? Thanks for posting it!!

  • wow its miss etta james .shes the bomb

  • Reading some of the comments about style over substance I feel I have to point out some (but the minority) of todays stars are driven by the market forces! Some of them are actually very talented I'm thinking about the voice of Chritina Aguillera which is fantastic when applied to the right songs, but would not sell many records for her.

  • I would agree with you on Christina's voice but not on the market forces though her latest CD was more about talent and it sold huge that is because 40 year old's bought it (and they buy Cd's they don't down load like 20 year olds)so in reality their would be more money it marketing talent but it is harder and record labels all ways want the easy way not the hard way , thanks for the comment by the way it is allways nice to hear peoples thoughts

  • Nice to hear your thoughts. Us 40 year olds do also download music, but my point was my children are not exposed to anything but market driven music except by me, who plays it constantly in the faintest hope they will share my enthusiasm unfortunately I'm still battling the record moguls who flog decent talent to death without exploring their sometimes evident talent.

  • I listen to a vast array of music and this is probably my favorite song of all the genres I listen to. I've heard some fantastic covers but Etta nails it!

  • ya she is my favorite of all

  • im only 20 but i love this type of music, i grew up listening to it because of my dad

  • 'Tovasdad' nice to hear from somebody who hasn't been brainwashed by simon cowell with Rhianna and alike.

What hope to the teenagers of today have?

    H x
