great, GREAT choice of samples :)))))).i hope there will be a lot of new material worthy of including into a jonas kaufmann tribute in the future :))))
This man is both an artist, tenor and musician: three words that usually arej't lumped together. His ability with languages alone sets him apart; couple that with his looks and his ability as a singing actor and you have an extraordinary combination of talents that would be rare in any age.
I have five of his CDs imported in into my iPod and I have listened to all them more times than I'd like to admit! That being said, I enjoy Jonas in German mode most of all. Although, a day doesn't go by without listening to him sing "Giulietta, son io" *swoon* or "Vesti la Giubba". Thanks very much for the great vid!
I've heard Kaufmann's Don Jose and his Alfredo live. The voice is not as large as recordings make it sound, but it has a dark, innately beautiful quality and quite a thrilling top. Despite being dark in color it still has a brassy edge and can get quite loud at times. I guess this makes him a bit of a spinto and a bit of a dramatic. He also has a signature sound...you know instantly who it is if you were blindfolded.
In a general sense a tribute signifies attesting to the qualities one admires in another; it does not have to be restricted to a retrospective of a finished body of work or achievement. Please continue to post what you admire in those who are still in medias res. I am thoroughly enjoying the whole series.
@bbbartolo Spinto means pushed or driven, not darker. Spinto voices are generally noted for their brassiness. I truthfully like Kaufmann more as time goes by and I hear him more. I really prefer him in German rep though.
@coloraturafan I mean: a "Tribute" is an homage to a great career ( Corelli, Bonisolli, Del Monaco, and so on); can you affirm this? I like (sometimes) Kaufmann, but I don't believe that he will have the same career. In each case, even if he will have, I think is too soon for a "tribute". It's my opinion, sorry.
@chicchimio Today, Kaufmann is the brightest star among opera singers. Of course that is only my opinion. There are no facts in these assessments. Why shouldn't someone pay tribute to an artist they admire? There are many great singers out there for us to hear, and so many recorded artists we can only know through recordings. Not all of us can agree on who is the "best" of "one of the 100 greatest singers" but all of us can appreciate hearing a "gift" and that is what Kaufmann is to his fans.
The most interesting german tenor since decades. His Don José and Florestan are really fantastic, his interpretations are allways exciting in every part. I hope to hear him for many, many years !

Hmmm.... When Kaufmann is good he is great, but way too often he isn't good.
His voice doesn't carry through all the necessary registers. And his pianissimo singing is lacking core. On the top he is often very strained.

I do not care whatever classification is applied to his voice. To me his the most exciting tenor today. His voice defies classification.

he doesn't sound like a tenor to me, at least not the kind of tenor i like to listen to. still, he has a nice voice, whatever it is supposed to be.
ilfig1iomio 1 year ago
@ilfig1iomio called a "spinto" tenor - on the "darker" side, with a timbre like a baritone, I guess.
bbbartolo 1 year ago
@bbbartolo
yes, very baritonal. that's what i first thought of him. he's giving a recital in my city in a few weeks so i may go to see him.
