The point of them is that when you have a country that supplies a huge amount of natural gas to Europe you don't need a huge military to protect you from them. All you have to do if they interfere with what you think are your interests is to threaten to turn off their gas supply. How are their politicians going to go to their people and explain why they are freezing in the dark? They'll think twice before starting something.

Russia doesn't even need a military with respect to Europe because it can shut off their natural gas and they will freeze in the dark. Canada, on the other hand participated in the invasion of the Soviet Union/Russia in the latter stages of WWI. Also, I tend to thing of the Russian/Georgian conflict as part of a interminable litany of ethnic hatred that blights so much of the planet, be it in Rwanda or the former Yugoslavia or Israel/Palestine. The point of them is that when you have a country that supplies a huge amount of natural gas to Europe you don't need a huge military to protect you from them. All you have to do if they interfere with what you think are your interests is to threaten to turn off their gas supply. How are their politicians going to go to their people and explain why they are freezing in the dark? They'll think twice before starting something.

It makes these old ugly men feel powerful and virile. They rest of the population suffers. Then you have a natural disaster and their are not enough resources to combat it because the money was spent elsewhere. What does that do for your national prestige? It makes you feel impotent in the face of crisis.

wow this whole country is just a joke so sad.. while they give away millions of dollar and oil for super low prices to other countries something which resulsts in a huge losses in the countries economy their own country is on fire and people must beg for money to try to stop the fire. Cant understand how this country work however it is just a joke sad for the people that must live there.
