Odin hung on one, christ hung on one , Buddha sat underneath one, Inanna made a bed out of one . It can be equated with kundalini and with inducing trance states .
An all-time favourite fim and brilliant scene. I first saw this on The Movie Channel in Canada around 1984 not knowing anything about it. This is how to do horror - with intelligence, pacing and suggestion. Please put that recent remake into a Wicker Man and burn it, Lord Summerisle.

I was overjoyed to see a creepy thriller based on Celtic religion. I'd learned about the Wicker Man and all the human-sacrifice rituals of the ancient Britons, but it all seems to have passed on into history.
I was actually just about to ask how accurate to Paganism they were; I'm looking to rent the movie soon and I've been curious how well they do. I saw the disclaimer at the beginning of the film though and that gave me some confidence that they did their research, but I won't know for certain until I see it :)

i don't see the point in cutting out the nude scenes because part of the film was the fact that the policeman was disgusted by all the nudity and sexualness on the island, so cutting it out you will be missing part of the film...

1. In the parade scene, "Punch" (or the fool) is not from Celtic paganism. but an Italian puppet character, originally called "Puncinello".
2. The Maypole comes from tree-worship.
3. The Wicker Man is known only from Roman accounts of pre-Roman Britain. The Romans destroyed much of the Celtic Paganism shown in the film, but some of it survived in Wales.
4. In the mid-1800's, the Brits had a renewed interest in Celtic language and mythology, and that's when Neo-Paganism began.

He was like a shadow self of the king, a dark twin who contained all the 'bad' parts of the king, and all the mistakes and mishaps of the people over the year . He acted as a scape-goat and took all the 'sins' with him when he was sacrificed at Beltaine (Easter ) .

I don't know for sure, to be honest. I think I remember on the extras on the DVD that Britt wasn't full enough in the director's opinion, so he got someone with a bigger bum to dance in these scenes and she wasn't best pleased about it :) - lovely song either way. Cheers now.

I found this on vhs in 1998 and I loved it. The movie was pretty much forgotten until it came out on DVD.
I was overjoyed to see a creepy thriller based on Celtic religion. I'd learned about the Wicker Man and all the human-sacrifice rituals of the ancient Britons, but it all seems to have passed on into history.

I saw the disclaimer at the beginning of the film though and that gave me some confidence that they did their research, but I won't know for certain until I see it :)

hypnotising. yes, that goes without saying, just like it goes without saying that it is a great song. There is somethingelse about it which is hard to identify, but it is that unidentified thing that makes it so great. maybe it is the actress, the reaction given by edward woodward, the sheer magnificance of the tune, or perhaps the relation the song has with the untimely end of the sergeant. with his resisting the woman, and remaining a virgin, he certified his own sacrafice in this scene.
