  • Who the hell is saying Geishas were prostitutes? "Oirans" were courtesans who were trained to be high classed entertainers and for sexual prowess. Exclusively marketed towards the wealthy. A "Geisha" is solely an entertainer for the general public. The popularity of the Geisha in the 1700s was what brought an end to the Oiran. Please learn Japanese history properly. Many Japanese have been offended when these two get mixed up.

  • one of best movie i ever see love it love it <3

  • Your damn right the music is by Shiina Ringo! Don't forget it. :P

  • Am I the only one who first saw the movie, then read the manga, and was like ''WTF where's the ending?!!'' when they finished it??

Anyways, loved both the manga and the movie. Every shot in the movie is gorgeous! <3

  • @thisiswolfmoon

It's called Kono Yo No Kagiri (:

  • Does anyone know the name of the song that finishes this trailer? I think it's pretty interesting. :P

  • hey wer can I watch this movie w/ full eng sub? ive been looking i cant seem 2 find any :( HELP!! thanks :)

  • No matter what you do Tyrsh you will never be better than a native Japanese: ME. So you can shut up you Japanese wannabe! I know MY history and you are wrong.

  • lol i agree kimono's seem so heavy so how'd she kick that other lady!?!?!

  • Tyrrsh clearly has no concept of Japanese history.

  • @LoVeLeSsPaRaNoia Kid, I took up asian studies as a 3-unit course in my second semester as a freshman, so don't talk about me not knowing the truth about Japanese history when you're probably just watching some mainstream shit hollywood directors pull out of their craphole.

  • I'm not able to watch this movie.

I cant find anywhere online to watch it. D; Help me.

  • 忘れられない

  • I was only able to watch half of it because that's all I could watch~

  • @chopper0 there not geishas.. There prostitutes. Big difference.

  • @Saerathra yeah they look a little like the geishas and are just as pretty but Geishas dont do sex these women do

  • @freacls Go study real Jap history before you talk bullshit Mk?

  • @Tyrrsh you should watch Memoirs of Geisha, to learn what geisha is.. then you can call your self know about japanese culture history..

  • @konekoero Really? That movie was based on a book made by an american author, and it's classified as fiction. Go do some research idiot, before you give me an argument.

  • @Tyrrsh read it on wikipedia or any other reliable source out there.. geisha is NOT prostitute..

do some research then you can call me idiot =='a

  • @konekoero You already gave away your status as an idiot when you called Wikipedia a "reliable source". Get your facts straight, Wikipedia isn't the expert on most things, and basically anyone can vandalize an article and it'll take a long time before it gets corrected.

  • @Tyrrsh Before telling others to get their facts straight, where are yours coming from? Geisha were artists/entertainers in the first place. It's only with and because of the Americans around WW2 that people started to call them prostitutes. A Geisha is much more better as a person than a prostitute is.

  • @uareri27 Geisha were known to sleep with men even before the Americans arrived. In feudal Japan men who were married tend to view their wives as keepers of the house and nothing more, for romantic relationships/sex they turn to the geishas in the Yoshiwara district in Edo. There are no records of geishas operating outside the Yoshiwara district due to the original agreement of the brothel owners and as signed by the shogunate, thus geisha are confined there because THEY ARE prostitutes.

  • Comment removed

  • @Tyrrsh I still stick to Geisha being a performer more than a prostitute. Of course, they may have been sleeping with men, but Oiran are the prostitutes here. And this is coming from someone who also studied East Asian studies.

  • @uareri27 Any performer during the shogunate period was considered a "prostitute", since the Japanese coined the term as "a woman selling services" more or less. Even the woman who invented Kabuki, Izumo no Okuni, was deemed a prostitute, seeing as her performances were viewed as the selling of a part of her body.

  • @Tyrrsh

There have been many geisha districts out of the Yoshiwara in Edo (or Shimabara for Kyoto). Geisha districts, contrary to the prostitution districts, were not walled. You are mixing up prostitutes (joro, oiran, tayu, etc) and geisha.

Not to say that in places geisha didn't also sell their bodies in the past, but it was never their main trade, contrary to the prostitutes.

  • @alestane I didn't say that there aren't any other districts like Yoshiwara in Japan. I said that there aren't any records of Geishas working otuside of the Yoshiwara district in Edo. Joro, Oiran, and Tayu are Geisha, they are taught the many arts of entertainment in Japan as well as how to "serve" the men that go into the red-light district.

  • @Tyrrsh

No, joro, oiran and tayu are not geisha. Oiran and Tayu were taught many arts of entertainment but the styles and instruments were different.

Again, you're mixing both, and that's a mistake.

  • @alestane Oh yeah, fuck. I mixed up the terms, I forgot that Geisha were more of the performing artist type rather than the oiran, tayu and joro.

  • @alestane And sex was never a main trade in Feudal Japan, people didn't go into red-light districts just to have sex, you couldn't just go inside a tea-house and ask to bang the nearest girl you can find. Wine and song have to go first before the woman, a long ceremony of having dinner, watching the performances of a geisha, an introduction and/or casual chat to the woman you'll be sleeping with came first before the sex.

  • @Tyrrsh

You could certainly not do that with high-class prostitutes, for which a lot of time and money had indeed to be invested - and not even sure to "score".

But there was quite a lot of lower levels that required much less sophistication, down to quick affairs by the riverside.

  • Comment removed

  • @alestane Wow someone on youtube who has done actual research on geisha other than "memoirs of a geisha"... very refreshing

  • @Tyrrsh Geisha are entertainers whose choice it was to sleep with their customers.

Big difference from prostitutes, who do it as a job.

  • Can anyone tell me what is the name of the song at 0:55?

    Absolutly beautiful!

  • @Euchambersia Do you refer to this song? -> watch?v=4OFqtSQVtn4

It's Yume no Ato, released with the 1st album of tokyo jihen (Shiina Ringo's band)

  • OMG Ringo Shiina does the music in an Anna Tsuchiya movie I'm so stoked!

  • She's the Chinese Marion Cotillard !

  • Does anyone know what the middle song is? Cuz I know the first one is Gamble and the last is kono yo no kagiri. But cant seem to figure out the middle one XD

  • @capricorn14 It's "Yume no Ato"

  • The visual aesthetics of this movie work so well with the soundtrack- the way they contrast, complement, and highlight each other is gorgeous

  • haha nice kick anna...her voice really suits this film..i luv her..

  • i tried with the title of sakuran and there was no post found...... :C ¿?¡?¡

  • whats that song at the ending

  • I really enjoyed this movie,so beautiful,the art,scenes,i loved the ending!!!!

    : )

  • @manhunteress I really enjoy this movie too but ooooooh!!!! do I hate the ending!

  • @Discordia5 Why did you hate the ending??

  • @manhunteress I never felt the connection with her and the guy she ends up with at the end, it was random, like she used him to escape. There wasn't a romantic story behind their coupling, other than he wasn't AS inhumane to her as others. For instance, the story of how they met- he fetched her when she was a child and brought her to the brothel... didn't leave me swooning in retrospect. I wanted her to stay with the samurai so bad, maybe move into his mansion and become a wife. He was sweet.

  • @Discordia5 I felt the same way!! Also, I didn't feel much chemistry between the two, and that's weird 'cause in real life Anna (the lead) asked the guy (Ando, who plays Seiji-san) to go out with her. Oh well...

  • @syrupychobo That's interesting! They would have made a hot real-life couple. I'm glad someone else sees what I'm trying to say about the movie. *sigh* The samurai was such a good guy.....

  • @manhunteress where did u watch it?

  • @escaramuzaml I downloaded it,can't remember where from,try dl it!!!!

  • The Song in the beginning is Gamble -Shiina Ringo x Saito Neko ,bt don,t know about the other though.

  • The last one is Kono yo no Kagiri.

  • the second song sounds like yume no uta and the third is a duet with her brother. i forgot the name of it though.

  • oooo holy shit,,Shiina Ringo and Anna Tsuchiya 2 in one .I will most definitely watch this

  • what's the song playing at the begining? :O

  • Anna Tsuchiya is just SOOOO BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • am soo wanna watch this movie! i am a huge Anna Tsuchiya fan, so it should be even more awesome to see her in a movie! woot! I <3's ANNA!

  • Would somebody be able to tell me the name of the song at the begining? Thanks.

  • Anna tsuchiya! wooooww o.o

  • The movie was great! The ending could have been better though...

  • whats the songs name starting at 1:27?

  • Nobuddy knows?

  • It is "Kono Yo no Kagiri" by Shina Ringo, Saito Neko, and Shina Junpei.

  • Mika Ninagawa is one of my favourite photographers. I knew when i saw the trailor i was gona love the film, & i was rright!

The film was great, & I recommend 2any1 who enjoys vibrant coloured comedies.

    <3 x

  • wow,

everyone commenting on this are maladjusted nerds, .

Oh shit.. now I'm one of them ... arrgh!

  • What the **** are you talking about?

  • Obviously, he/she was right, you really don't have the brain capacity to comprehend any attempt to explain to YOU, how or what the director was trying to do with the film. If you didn't notice already from the vivid, bright colours in the film that the director took great liberties with the context of the film, the music, which I loved, should have. And rather, the one who's looking like an idiot right now, is you, GreenTeaTwat, he/she isn't the one with all the thumbs down.

  • Wow I didn't think that intelligence could stoop any lower but you, my dear, have proved to be the exception. Just like how you didn't realise that the music in the film was intentional, my 'bad impersonation' was used for the purposes of sarcasm in order to belittle what is left of your intelligence. The world is harsh on idiots and I'm afraid you are one of them.

  • Here's a little situation to explain what's going on here: You know how, when people are stupid...and get things sooo very wrong, it pisses you off? On the internets, people give not-so-friendly warnings on how wrong you are. :D How generous of primrosehoneyflower. 1+ internets for him/her, unfortunately -2 internets for you :(

  • Obviously, you must not have the brain capacity to understand any type of film that defies convention. The rock music is meant to be anachronistic to create an exaggerated, comic-like hyper reality. Go back to watching your sappy love stories where everyone gets Leukemia. GreenTeaTwat.

  • hi.

  • arguments make me sad, please stop.

  • Why, I believe that I too was 'simply stating my opinion'. The opinion that you are just another person unable to recognise anything artistically unconventional. Do you really think that the director said 'I'm going to make a film about the Edo period but all I have is rock music. OH WELL!' But well, that's just my opinion of course. It seems that I can conclude that calling me 'pathetic' means that you do not respect my opinion. I can smell the hypocrisy. Practise what you preach. Twat.

  • it's such a sweet and simple movie

i really liked it, very much indeed :)

  • I read about this picture in the magazine Giant Robot. I got the impression that Anna wasn't that thrilled with giving the interview. Still, I was interested enough to buy the movie on ebay. I really liked it!

  • what is the song that is being played in the beginning of the trailer..? that was DOPE ass music...

  • Shiina Ringo - Gamble

  • thanks a lot man...i appreciate it...i will look into it...

  • what is the song at 1:28 ?

  • "Kono yo no kagiri", Shiina Ringo is behind all music in this flick.

  • holy crap i would watch this just because it has music by shiina ringo in it

  • Moyoco Anno is a genius.

  • I love sakuran! I read the manga before seeing the movie both were awesome. I love the background music remind me of the marie antoinette movie.

  • hy kitty, look we have the same nick 'chobit' ^__^

by the way, wer r u from and how did u get the manga version of sakuran??? im using this movie as my thesis object...love this movie a lot and the music is genius...

  • wow i wanna watch this! go Anna!

  • I meant the movie: Memoires of a Geisha

  • really? how so? it doesnt sound anything like memoirs of a geisha to me..

  • in memoirs of a geisha, she was also a little girl when she went to the other geishas, and she became also very popular, and she also fell in love with some man, who she couldn't be with

    well just my opinion

  • Comment removed

  • they are similar but yet very different.. I prefer this one though, because it's very artistically done, and in a sense it inspiring.

  • Memoirs of a Geisha (which is NOT historically accurate due to a mistranslation and the geisha the author interviewed filed a lawsuit against the author for that reason) have a common basis because geisha and oiran have the same origins and similar lifestyles, except geisha did not and do not have sex with their customers.

  • what's the difference between an oiran and a geisha?

  • Oiran's are high class prostitutes.

Whereas , Geisha's are mainly entertainers.

  • thanks for the info...

although "high-class prostitute" is kind of an oxymoron...

  • Not true, a high class prostitute can and does exist. Just because someone has sex for money doesn't mean they can't have class.

  • Not true, a high class prostitute can and does exist. There is no coloration between profession and personality.

  • I wonder if that's the case for all "high-class" prostitutes around the globe... surely, prostitutes in Russia, the States, and the continent of Africa don't have the same treatment, even if they do consider themselves high-class.

  • There are unbelievable cultures in the world and history. Oirans demanded tens of thousands of dollars for 1 dinner and never have a sex before 3 dinners. Moreover, she could refuse him after these dinners if she felt he's not cool. And ukiyoe prints of oirans were sold as pinups in Edo. It's like far-off idol star than prostitutes, isn't it?

  • Anna Tsuchiya played the part rather well I thought- in the book the protagonist is rather blunt and rough. Her best role (other than Nana) is on Kamikaze Girls I think^^

  • I'm trying to track down a Japanese film and was wondering if you could help me....I've been looking for it for 15 years...it's a black and white about a school teacher who rides her bike every day to teach children....then, the war, and the end of the movie is of her tracking down the kids, many have died...nursing one from sickness...I don't have too many more details...I saw the movie in 88 or 89 and hope to find it one day...Thanks

  • Where can I watch this video online?? I want to watch it sooo baddd!!

  • I wanna see this movie so bad!

  • This movie was amazing. Kiyoha was supposed to be different from all the other girls in the brothel. Anna Tsuchiya played this role perfectly.

  • omg omg omg sum1 needs 2 tell me where 2 watch it wit eng subs!!! i checked everywhere!!!!!!

  • konoyo no kagiri by shiina ringo

  • In Sakuran there are two oiran.

The protagonist starts as a jorou and becomes an oiran late on in the movie (making the total of oiran three)

Geisha DO feature in the film (just outnumbering the oiran)

Most of the ladies are jorou.

There is no separate quarter for the Oiran in this movie (and I can't see how there ever could have been in Yoshiwara).

And oiran, geisha and any self-respecting jorou would have all had blackened teeth anyway.

  • hehe Ando Masanobu 8)

  • I do not like Anna in this role because her face looks too Western for such a setting.

  • its funny how you said that... i didn't know she was half white until i profiled her but she just looks out of place with the rest of the Japanese cast. but hey at least its not limiting her roles...

  • Anna only ever receives the very raunchy or roles that suit her extremely loud and crass personality. I love the girl, but this film was a huge disappointment because I see positively no class in her (even though she's playing a glorified prostitute)

  • Wow, you're picky. She looks so much like the manga character the movie is based on.

  • it has absolutely nothing to do with Geisha. They do not live in Geisha houses. Memoirs of a Geisha is incorrect anyway. oiran are high class prostitutes. Anna Tsuchiya is amazing for the role coz the character is rebellious and stands out, just like the actress. Oh and I think Shiina Ringo was a really good choice for the music. It all worked really well.

  • They're NOT GEISHAS. They're oirans, which basically is same as a geisha but oirans were also courtesans, very high-classed ones, in the history their services got so expensive their culture didn't survive. They used to live on their own districts and had nothing to do with geisha houses.

Looks like a fantastic movie. The actress looks too european for this role tho but the colours are awesome. Purr <3

  • The movie doesn't seem to make such a distinction. It clearly says the protagonist was based in the Yoshiwara district (and not near Nihonbashi, but between Minowa and Asakusa as it's in the 18C). Latticed 'display' windows (not something I would associate with oiran) also feature prominently in the clip.

Yoshiwara was not large enough to have a separate oiran district. I recommend a visit to the Ichiyo Higuchi Memorial Museum for a better insight into this fascinating district.

  • Pretty good movie. Beautifully shot. I felt like painting after I saw it at the AFI filmfest in Hollywood.

Although some of the story feels "cut"-- like they could've gone more into some of the events. And Anna Tsuchiya, visually, looks like a manga character and her eurasian features make her stand out, but I felt like she could've done more emotionally.

  • Osu! I'm gonna watch it! Narimiya-sama is in it! Narimiya Hiroki! And Anna Tsuchiya! It's a great cast!!!

  • that role doesnt fit anna

  • Well, definately the part about them belonging to a Geisha house

But not so similar to the Memoirs of a Geisha story

I dont know why you got -3 though

  • Loved the book- anyone know if the movie will be made available to buy in North America?

  • very awesome!

someone tell me where i can DL this movie with english subs pleeeeasssseee!!!

  • If you are in New York, it's playing on the big screen at Japan Society on July 12 and July 13.
