Vic Mastriani was one of the best drummers ever but was never rated that way and he was the best drummer Ted ever had & with Rob Le Grainge on bass in those days there was no match.
Rob Grange played bass on this album, and also on "Call Of The Wild", and then on Ted's first three classic solo albums. True to form, ol' Unka' Ted doesn't know a good thing even if it bites him on the ass, he got rid of Rob and Derek St. Holmes right after "Cat Scratch Fever", and never had a decent album until Derek joined him for "Spirit Of The Wild" in 1995. Rob and Marco Mendoza were the best bassists Ted ever had, IMO.
After his Ted days, Rob didn't pick up a bass for thirty years, but him, Derek, and the late Cliff Davies had a reunion jam, and according to Derek, Rob played like he had never stopped, they even made a recording where they did all of the hits. Rob has done very well for himself in the meantime, he sells real estate in San Diego, and is a multimillionaire, while Ted still has to grind it out to make a living at 61 years of age.
If you want to hear some more great playing by Rob, pop in "Cat Scratch Fever", and listen to "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang", but, and I am serious, turn down the mids and the treble on your player, and the bass all the way up....you'll definitely hear for sure the man that gave Ted a rock solid foundation for his playing.
@GonzGunner has to grind it out ha the man is a stinking fucken rich he could stop working at anytime and not spend all of his money and he has done it all his way !!!!!!!!!!!!!
@schoonymopar -Dude, cool the jets. Ted is the one who has to grind it out, due to his own admitted lack of financial oversight at the most profitable and high points of his career. The guy can't quit working and live off millions of dollars supposedly stashed away. He has a lot of bills and a couple of minor children out of wedlock to pay for. Most of his contemporaries have retired, if you take a look around.
That bass player is insane ! Thanks for posting this, Hibernation and Freeflight-3 of my top 5 Nude related songs ! (I also like a Thousand knives and Live it up)
Both albums "Call of the Wild" and "Tooth, Fang and Claw" have excellent bass work! The intro of "Hibernation" is an excellent example of inventive bass playing, by using diads instead of only single notes.
Thanks for posting "Free Flight" and "Maybelline." The Best Version of this Song ever!! I'm 46 Have Seen Ted Probably 20 times in 31 Years And Prayed he Would play either one of these songs but he didnt. But at least i can hear him now...thanks!!
No problemo...I am glad that I could be of service! Ted probably has never played Free Flight in concert because there are complex, overlaid guitar harmonies in the song.
People want to hear the popular hit songs when they attend a concert. It is a pity because there are many good songs by the Nuge that do not get airplay, such as: "Saddle Sore" (State of Shock) or "Good Friends and a Bottle of Wine" (Weekend Warriors).
Consider yourself HIT, baybay! You're welcome!

Man, I wonder if George Jones and Johnny Paycheck heard this version before they recorded their 1979 duet version of Maybelline?

Needless to say, I am a big fan of Ted's music.
