I played some Pete Johnson for an acquaintance who worked as a lounge pianist. He got his nose up in the air and said something about it being simple. Then he tried it. The "simple" bass patterns got all snarled up.
GREAT! Albert and Pete - founders of the classic boogie piano style! Don't forget Meade lux Lewis as the third genius of these legendary piano players! Stomp it!
@MrTriolian it was interesting to read that boogie began in the early 1870's on Dr. John Tennison's "NONJOHN" site, alot, I mean alot of info there. blew me away.
Two geniuses! I still have my parents copy of " Eight to the Bar- two Piano Boogie Woogie for Dancing" issued in 1941. Eight sides of brilliance! Too bad this is the only video of these guys. Self taught as well, if I'm not mistaken. Most modern players do a fine job of copying Albert and Pete but sound a bit sterile in comparison.
Brilliant as always, but it's just a pity the footage was badly spliced in the middle, possibly due to damage on the original. But it just means that when it comes to the left hand style change it doesn't quite fit at that point because there's a small section missing. But,what the hell. It's still one of the finest pieces of boogie ever laid down.
On TV like 20 odd years ago I saw a session with Axel Zwingenberger on piano and Charlie Watts on drums, can't recall the other band members but they were called South Bank Boogie. Does anyone know where the hell I can get it?

They always come in threes: Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms; Schoenberg, Webern, and Berg; Clapton, Beck and Page; Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, and Meade Lux Lewis.

The first known Boogie Woogie record was by Pine Top Smith called "Pine Top's Boogie Woogie" recorded in 1928. It's a great track. Pine Top was shot shortly after that recording. Apparantly his last words were to Albert Ammons "Learn my Boogie Woogie"
@headache1956 Sorry to disappoint you, but the first known full-fledged boogie woogie on record is "Chicago Stomp" by Jimmy Blythe, recorded in 1924, in Chicago. Blythe also made a piano roll of it at about the same time. However, it has a walking bass. The first known appearance of the kind of boogie bass these guys are using is in James P. Johnson's piano roll of "Joe Turner Blues" from 1922.
@headache1956 One theme of "Pine Top's Boogie Woogie" is based upon the third theme of "Jimmie Blues" by Jimmy Blythe, which he recorded in 1925. The other themes seem to be Pine Top's own. Blythe didn't just do excellent stride piano and walking bass, he could also boogie like crazy a'la Pine Top; check out his 1925 recording of "Sunshine Special" backing up singer Sodarisa Miller.
@headache1956 If you want to go back further than 1924, then try Lemuel Fowler's tune "Wicked Dirty Fives" which he made on a piano roll circa 1923, and also recorded in 1923 backing up singer Edna Hicks. It's slower than this, but it's a really tasty recording! Only a couple choruses are boogie, but it's important because it's a more familiar and more complicated left-hand figure.
@headache1956 Meade Lux Lewis acknowledged Lemuel Fowler as an early influence on his style, and both he and Albert Ammons were influenced by Jimmy Blythe, probably by seeing him in person at various Chicago rent parties. The piano blues and boogie tradition goes way back: even early pianists Clarence Williams, Richard M. Jones, and Jelly Roll Morton named the early unrecorded blues players who influenced them.
@KawhackitaRag No need to say sorry my friend. Dissapointed me? On the contrary, you've enlightened me. I will check out those tracks you mentioned. Many thanks
@RockabillyWilly1 Just to throw some chaos in the mix, some people consider "The Rocks" by Clay Custer (1923) as being the first recorded boogie woogie solo, and indeed it is a lot more boogie than other blues piano recordings from the same year. It is a very neat recording and I recommend checking it out along with the Jimmy Blythe and Lemuel Fowler stuff. The tune was composed by George W. Thomas, but Custer is an unknown pianist.
Now that's how you play boogie! I love Ammons facial expressions. I'll bet he was a kick to hang with. Tickle the ivories. Ammons doesn't even look like he's trying. Brilliant! Thanks for posting this. This IS priceless video.
It was my pleasure yes boogie woogie is still something that never will die :) especially when you look at these guys you will be reminded where it all came from..boogie on !!

It's a FRICKING JOKE. However, if you want to get serious, send me some piano playing of yours and then we'll see who's the better man.

How did the music and the overall culture deteriorate so badly? Thankfully great work by great masters is still available to those of us who long for a time when there were true musical giants. This video is priceless.

I thik one of the other things that happened was that the Hammond B3 came on to the scene pioneered by Jimmy Smith. It was a full orchestra in itself and in the hand of a great practitiner with a trio blew the house apart. Fortunately other's kept the spirit going. Listen out for Ian Stewart (the sixth stone). Personally I'd give Jools Holland a miss, He can't swing though his brother is very good.
OMG SO THAT's HIM!? my mother always told me we were related to Albert and Gene Ammons and I'd never had a chance to hear their music. This is insane runs in the family
People need to loosen up and just dance in the street to this kinda stuff. People would be so much happier, communities would be stronger. I would boogie in the street everyday to this. Bring back the good old days man!!!
The day I am on my deathbed (and I am in no hurry, being only 73), I want to have this video played. I would then get up and be good for another 100 years or so of boogieing..
I've been listening to boogie awhile now, and I've discovered that the pinky finger playing thedown beat of the left hand is not striking a dotted eighth note... this gives the ostinato pattern a more relaxed feel and sound.
i had seen these guys on a blues special on tv in england and been dying to see this video again, absolutely top dollar boogie woogie. thank you for the posting
Those comments has been erased =) thank you for your support. People if you want to have a fight please do it face to face but not here in the text. Those 2 people have been blocked. Keep it nice, all ages =)
i strongly urge everyone to check out "Chicago Legends 1926/1950" It's a CD that features Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Marton, Johnny Odds, Jimmie Noone, Mezz Mezzrow, Earl Hines, Horace Henderson, Sonny Thompson, Eddie Chamblee, Pinetop Smith, Jimmy Yancey, Albert Ammons, Big Bill Broonzy, Big Maceo, and Muddy Waters. Alltogether there are 22 tracks with superb quality. You can even find it in your local library like I did :)
I think rock and roll music of the 50's is a teen-age mock degradation of the incredible music of geniuses from earlier years like Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson. These guys make Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis look like amateurs. The only white guy who was as good as these black guys at the same time period was Harry The Hipster Gibson who also has videos on youtube with Lena Horne. Check out Harry and you will be blown away.
Yes I have to agree, Down The Road Apiece was done by at least 100 people but it was written for Freddy Slack by the great song writer Don Raye in 1941.
The original lyrics for the song have "The drummer man's a guy they call 8-beat Mack and you remember Doc and old Beat me Daddy Slack" referring to 8 beat Ray McKinley, Doc Goldberg and Freddy Slack who were 3 members of Will Bradley Orc who recorded the song. They also recorded Beat Me Daddy 8 to the bar, Scrub Me Mamma, and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, all in 1941.

People need to loosen up and just dance in the street to this kinda stuff. People would be so much happier, communities would be stronger. I would boogie in the street everyday to this. Bring back the good old days man!!!

I've been listening to boogie awhile now, and I've discovered that the pinky finger playing thedown beat of the left hand is not striking a dotted eighth note... this gives the ostinato pattern a more relaxed feel and sound.

I just noticed that too Nickeyparadise. Very unusual I wd say. What does Eeco (Freekyhead( have to say about this.

This music is so beautiful. There were so many influential African Americans who showed so much talent. Albert Ammons is just one of those lucky men

i strongly urge everyone to check out "Chicago Legends 1926/1950" It's a CD that features Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Marton, Johnny Odds, Jimmie Noone, Mezz Mezzrow, Earl Hines, Horace Henderson, Sonny Thompson, Eddie Chamblee, Pinetop Smith, Jimmy Yancey, Albert Ammons, Big Bill Broonzy, Big Maceo, and Muddy Waters. Alltogether there are 22 tracks with superb quality. You can even find it in your local library like I did :)

Albert Ammons was the father of Gene Ammons, the Boss Tenor.

Or perhaps Freddie Slack, check out 'Down the road apiece' 1940 by Freakyhead. It's superb

Yes I have to agree, Down The Road Apiece was done by at least 100 people but it was written for Freddy Slack by the great song writer Don Raye in 1941.
hyzercreek 2 years ago
The original lyrics for the song have "The drummer man's a guy they call 8-beat Mack and you remember Doc and old Beat me Daddy Slack" referring to 8 beat Ray McKinley, Doc Goldberg and Freddy Slack who were 3 members of Will Bradley Orc who recorded the song. They also recorded Beat Me Daddy 8 to the bar, Scrub Me Mamma, and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, all in 1941.
