  • I played some Pete Johnson for an acquaintance who worked as a lounge pianist. He got his nose up in the air and said something about it being simple. Then he tried it. The "simple" bass patterns got all snarled up.

  • Brilliant. Particularly like the guy asleep in the corner. A*

  • Best ever

  • 2 true masters.

  • My feet started tapping in a frenzy to this song. :D

  • The best ever. Now this is real talent.

  • 13 people are unexplainable

  • it's just fucking intense!!!!

  • Pure sweet music!!

  • Thanks freakyhead! Can never be too much boogie woogie for me!

  • @62burnley no problem swing it !! :)

  • OMG...

  • Incredible, I wish I had a tenth of the talent that one of these men posessed........

  • 13 losers stopped playing piano after this video :))

  • Amazing.

  • Head bobbin, foot tappin music.

  • GREAT! Albert and Pete - founders of the classic boogie piano style! Don't forget Meade lux Lewis as the third genius of these legendary piano players! Stomp it!

  • @MrTriolian it was interesting to read that boogie began in the early 1870's on Dr. John Tennison's "NONJOHN" site, alot, I mean alot of info there. blew me away.

  • Two geniuses! I still have my parents copy of " Eight to the Bar- two Piano Boogie Woogie for Dancing" issued in 1941. Eight sides of brilliance! Too bad this is the only video of these guys. Self taught as well, if I'm not mistaken. Most modern players do a fine job of copying Albert and Pete but sound a bit sterile in comparison.

  • It is indeed a very young Lena Horne.

  • @crankbv1 Yes she was, and the very next song was her singing Unlucky Woman (also on Youtube).

  • Is that Lena Horne in the middle?

  • Brilliant as always, but it's just a pity the footage was badly spliced in the middle, possibly due to damage on the original. But it just means that when it comes to the left hand style change it doesn't quite fit at that point because there's a small section missing. But,what the hell. It's still one of the finest pieces of boogie ever laid down.

  • Yeah! Outstanding performance!

  • Boogie!

  • Are those magic fingers or whatt?

  • Comment removed

  • Computers might be able to play this song.

BUT THEY'LL NEVER IN THIS DISTURBED WORLD BE ABLE TO CREATE SUCH A MASTERPIECE!!!!

  • Why is this called a Waller compilation? There is not one Waller piece in the whole bunch.

  • sync is offfffffffffffffffffff

  • this piece of footage is the holy grail of boogie woogie

  • I'm not even sure you could programme a modern keyboard to play like those guys!

  • HEAVEN !

  • Ammons reminds me a lot of fats waller

  • These guys are GREAT! Thanks for posting freaky.

  • @JimboMega57 it was my pleasure :)..now boogie!!

    Eeco

  • On TV like 20 odd years ago I saw a session with Axel Zwingenberger on piano and Charlie Watts on drums, can't recall the other band members but they were called South Bank Boogie. Does anyone know where the hell I can get it?

  • very good!!

    Boogie Woogie - masters

  • I have an oral visual art has to do, and they gave me your video link to describe it ect ... Thanks! ^ ^ '

  • Never be another like em. Unbelievable God gifted talent beyond this world.

  • P.S. thanks for posting this great film clip of 1930s boogie greats!!!

  • They always come in threes: Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms; Schoenberg, Webern, and Berg; Clapton, Beck and Page; Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, and Meade Lux Lewis.

    Beautiful.

  • Ha, it´s a joy watching them!

  • the mess around style rolls around this melody

  • Ahhh..that was kick ass!

  • How they both keep in time together and keep that left hand bassline constant is Brilliant!!!!

  • Amazing !!! Where and when was it recorded ?

  • @zorbazig it was recorded in 1941

    Eeco

  • @freakyhead20

  • so amazing how ammons looks at 1:59 like "do you like it" like he's playing like ahh well its nothing..I wish I could go back in time *sigh

    Eeco

  • haha i was thinking the same thing

  • A little history on Albert Ammons born Sept 23, 1907 death Dec ,2, 1949--- passed away so very young, what a great loss.

  • Zajebiastyczne granie!! Brawo!!!

  • Being an intermediate piano player I can attest to the difficulty of keeping that left hand pounding away, and these guys do that so magnificently! Their left hands are machines!!

  • whooooo hoooooo!!! I can only imagine the strength in these men's hands!!

  • Браво!!

    Bravo!!

  • Started end 19" century and 1920, most played in so called barellhouses.

But still great music, I wich I could play like this. Grtz

  • Thanks! Have read at Wikipedia - says it started at the late 1800 as a "Rent Parties" WITH ONLY ONE PIANO PLAYER (was cheaper that way - but then it grown bigger and bigger and finally ended as 50s rock n roll. Thanks buddy for answering.

All the best and a Happy New Year!

  • Anyone know when the first Boogie Woogie song was played/ recorded? 1000 thanks for the one who knows the answer!

  • 1985-Brit historical video ---SOUTHBANK BOOGIE.--VIDEO pointed out that some guy copyrighted the name. Look for the video and it may give you a decent clue. Much music--Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons, Axel Zwingenberger, Big Joe Duskin, Bob Hall, George Hall, and others.

  • About 1985 there was a Brit historical on boogie--SOUTH BANK BOOGIE--VIDEO. Much music from the early 1900s. Some guy copy righted the name Boogie. This video may be helpful.

  • The first known Boogie Woogie record was by Pine Top Smith called "Pine Top's Boogie Woogie" recorded in 1928. It's a great track. Pine Top was shot shortly after that recording. Apparantly his last words were to Albert Ammons "Learn my Boogie Woogie"

  • @headache1956 Sorry to disappoint you, but the first known full-fledged boogie woogie on record is "Chicago Stomp" by Jimmy Blythe, recorded in 1924, in Chicago. Blythe also made a piano roll of it at about the same time. However, it has a walking bass. The first known appearance of the kind of boogie bass these guys are using is in James P. Johnson's piano roll of "Joe Turner Blues" from 1922.

  • @headache1956 One theme of "Pine Top's Boogie Woogie" is based upon the third theme of "Jimmie Blues" by Jimmy Blythe, which he recorded in 1925. The other themes seem to be Pine Top's own. Blythe didn't just do excellent stride piano and walking bass, he could also boogie like crazy a'la Pine Top; check out his 1925 recording of "Sunshine Special" backing up singer Sodarisa Miller.

  • @headache1956 If you want to go back further than 1924, then try Lemuel Fowler's tune "Wicked Dirty Fives" which he made on a piano roll circa 1923, and also recorded in 1923 backing up singer Edna Hicks. It's slower than this, but it's a really tasty recording! Only a couple choruses are boogie, but it's important because it's a more familiar and more complicated left-hand figure.

  • @headache1956 Meade Lux Lewis acknowledged Lemuel Fowler as an early influence on his style, and both he and Albert Ammons were influenced by Jimmy Blythe, probably by seeing him in person at various Chicago rent parties. The piano blues and boogie tradition goes way back: even early pianists Clarence Williams, Richard M. Jones, and Jelly Roll Morton named the early unrecorded blues players who influenced them.

  • @KawhackitaRag No need to say sorry my friend. Dissapointed me? On the contrary, you've enlightened me. I will check out those tracks you mentioned. Many thanks

  • @RockabillyWilly1 Just to throw some chaos in the mix, some people consider "The Rocks" by Clay Custer (1923) as being the first recorded boogie woogie solo, and indeed it is a lot more boogie than other blues piano recordings from the same year. It is a very neat recording and I recommend checking it out along with the Jimmy Blythe and Lemuel Fowler stuff. The tune was composed by George W. Thomas, but Custer is an unknown pianist.

  • These guys r way beyond extraordinary talent. Incredible

  • Every time i listen to these incredible musicians it just blows me away how talented they r.

  • Those old time black musicians r awesome

  • unreal left hand control

  • Best there ever was right here.

  • Now that's how you play boogie! I love Ammons facial expressions. I'll bet he was a kick to hang with. Tickle the ivories. Ammons doesn't even look like he's trying. Brilliant! Thanks for posting this. This IS priceless video.

  • One of my favorite videos on YouTube, thanks for sharing.

  • Hey jebsievers. I got your joke straight away. I thought it was succinct, clever, really funny and right on the button. These guys ARE so good you'd think it was robotics. Forget the idiots that shot their mouth off.

  • To still have the 78s (record) of these two great pioneers of boogie woogie is a blessing!!!! wish i cna play like this :)

  • FAKE. Player pianos connected to animatronics.

  • So you think this is fake? I know the granddaughter of Albert Ammons you can ask her if this video is fake ;)

  • Can't you guys take a joke? Jesus. This is an AWESOME video. Duh. I said they were "player" pianos (you know, the type of pianos that play themselves) and the people connected to them were ANIMATRONICS (you know, like those fake robots you see at Disney World). It's a FRICKING JOKE. However, if you want to get serious, send me some piano playing of yours and then we'll see who's the better man.

  • Youtuber's are stupid and can't take jokes.

    LOL THEY ARE TWINS

  • HA!

  • To jebsievers, Hey, smarty, give me your address, I 'll send you a gun with one bullet in it, you need it...

  • how is this fake?!

    1. you can see there hands on the right keys

2.there are lots of other people doing this so... why would they make it fake?

    3.your stupid ;)

    Have a nice day :D

  • Thank God for these old recordings on film!

We American's forget how great our musical history is.

Now, the world can enjoy what we took for granted.

    Giant talents.

Thank you for posting this bon mot of musical history.

you chose 2 of the very best.

  • this is way better than todays music! im fasinated by boogie woogie

  • I totally agree with you :) children should make more music..it makes you smart

    ~Eeco

  • Check out the jools holland and dr john video also on youtube that is also a class boogie woogie duet

  • How did the music and the overall culture deteriorate so badly? Thankfully great work by great masters is still available to those of us who long for a time when there were true musical giants. This video is priceless.

  • Hi 8house! Good question!

As a pianist of 45 years experience and as someone who is deeply steeped in history, I've often wondered myself.

Two things happened after 1950 that affected music. Electronic amplification, especially of guitars, which allowed for smaller, cheaper ensembles than the big bands. The other thing was TV. After TV, people just stayed home. Before TV, people got out more to where lthere was live music. There were more venues for musicians to cultivate their talent.

  • Great answer. Today's music makes me cry :( BRING BACK THE GOOD OL' DAYS!!!

  • I thik one of the other things that happened was that the Hammond B3 came on to the scene pioneered by Jimmy Smith. It was a full orchestra in itself and in the hand of a great practitiner with a trio blew the house apart. Fortunately other's kept the spirit going. Listen out for Ian Stewart (the sixth stone). Personally I'd give Jools Holland a miss, He can't swing though his brother is very good.

  • This music makes my spirit fly.

  • lol

  • Haha. Great response!

  • Wonderfull music, two of the greatest. Never see the like again!

  • OMG SO THAT's HIM!? my mother always told me we were related to Albert and Gene Ammons and I'd never had a chance to hear their music. This is insane runs in the family

    ~Eeco

  • BOOGIE WOOGIE !!!!!!

    GET IT !!!

  • just fab!!! I saw a piece of this on the 1996 Blue Note documentary.. so nice to see it here!

  • Not only they were geniuses, but you can see Joy and Goodness in their eyes ! Great vid ! Thanx !!!

  • esto es un orgasmo para mis oidos

  • I've been listening to boogie awhile now, and I've discovered that the pinky finger playing thedown beat of the left hand is not striking a dotted eighth note... this gives the ostinato pattern a more relaxed feel and sound.

  • I just noticed that too Nickeyparadise. Very unusual I wd say. What does Eeco (Freekyhead( have to say about this.

  • I will say... amazing!

  • Just another visit to get my 'boogie' fix!...fantastic

  • OOH SWEET JESUS this is what its all about!!!

pure music for the heart and soul!!!!!!

  • ya bad languge isnt good

  • yeah that's right.

  • Thank you so much for this vid!

  • This music is so beautiful. There were so many influential African Americans who showed so much talent. Albert Ammons is just one of those lucky men

  • i strongly urge everyone to check out "Chicago Legends 1926/1950" It's a CD that features Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Marton, Johnny Odds, Jimmie Noone, Mezz Mezzrow, Earl Hines, Horace Henderson, Sonny Thompson, Eddie Chamblee, Pinetop Smith, Jimmy Yancey, Albert Ammons, Big Bill Broonzy, Big Maceo, and Muddy Waters. Alltogether there are 22 tracks with superb quality. You can even find it in your local library like I did :)

  • hey..maybe anybody know is this Pete Johnson father of Johnnie Johnson who played with Chuck Berry??

  • No, they're unrelated.

  • Thanks! I asked if they are related cause they both play so great:) (and have the same surname)

  • Albert Ammons was the father of Gene Ammons, the Boss Tenor.

  • Where can we find the partition of this Boogie please ??!!!

  • I think rock and roll music of the 50's is a teen-age mock degradation of the incredible music of geniuses from earlier years like Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson. These guys make Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis look like amateurs. The only white guy who was as good as these black guys at the same time period was Harry The Hipster Gibson who also has videos on youtube with Lena Horne. Check out Harry and you will be blown away.

  • Or perhaps Freddie Slack, check out 'Down the road apiece' 1940 by Freakyhead. It's superb

    jphar

  • Yes I have to agree, Down The Road Apiece was done by at least 100 people but it was written for Freddy Slack by the great song writer Don Raye in 1941.

  • The original lyrics for the song have "The drummer man's a guy they call 8-beat Mack and you remember Doc and old Beat me Daddy Slack" referring to 8 beat Ray McKinley, Doc Goldberg and Freddy Slack who were 3 members of Will Bradley Orc who recorded the song. They also recorded Beat Me Daddy 8 to the bar, Scrub Me Mamma, and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, all in 1941.
