i think white needles could be the working class people because, compared to the world they are small like needles, and the red could be the big corporate leaders, and that the pure, white, needles are covered with the sins of the owner because they work for them

White needles is probably in reference to the white collar workers. The people who don't make a living through manual labor. They probably use the term "white needles" in reference to the people that are white collar workers that choose to get richer and more powerful by exploiting the blue collar workers below them. Like say, for example, a CEO of a company, running that company into the red ("white needles buried in the red"), getting rewarded for it, and those at the bottom are fired.

It's a reference to a car. I thought that was pretty damn obvious.

The rpms needle is white, and the last couple numbers on the rpms display are red, to warn drivers not to rev the car any harder.

Hence the 'the engine runs and then it quits' part. Running the car into the red will blow your motor pretty fast.

The whole thing is a metaphor.
