Even though, according to David Lynch, this was one of his most frustrating and disappointing endeavors, it's still among my favorite movies of all time. And though it's not completely true to the book, as an artistic interpretation, I find it far better than the other versions
"The sleeper must awaken..." - many people are the opinion, that something is really sleeping inside of us and when it awakes, then we become what we have actually been all the time, but we haven't known it - we become the God...
George Lucas STOLE most of the ideas for his Star Wars movies from Frank Herbert's Dune Series of books. Lucas read Herbert's novel DUNE while he was attending USC in film school.
Lucas STOLE many of Herberts main themes and ideas and reworked them into his screenplay for Star Wars.
Dune took Frank Herbert SIX YEARS of research and writing to complete (1959 - 1965). The Dune series of books were masterpieces of Sci Fi writing.
@ThoughtTraveler the original star wars trilogy was good though, brought space opera to the masses and in it's way made sci-fi more popular than it was before. I like Star Wars, but it's childs play compared to Dune though. A much more esoteric and intelligent setting.
Cameron also stole from Dune for Avatar since Dune is one of his inspirations. He replaced the desert with the jungle and has similar ideas of a white man going to a unique planet then ends up being lost in the wild then falls in love with an alien chick, goes through tests of manhood including riding beasts and becoming one of the people and fighting against a greedy corporation that exploits a substance.
@jogu78= Yes. Now whenever I see him when the shows on, I alway expect a giant worm to come crashing out of the ground, and Sting popping out of nowhere.
You should do an Avatar-Dune parody trailer featuring clips from this movie set to Avatar's trailer audio since both movies are similar and Dune is one of the things Cameron took from. That would be funny or cool to see a mash-up trailer.

So true. Avatar was pure propaganda.

@Johnlindsey289 The only problem with this argument is the hundreds of other sci-fi novels that have a similar theme, that never became movies.

Without change, something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken.

You know why this part was so good in the film?
They hired an ACTOR to play the part, not a celebrity-thus, a great part of the book came to life on the screen!
