look at the facts it was a pefectly legal delivery and no rules were boken why was everybody so against someone just playing to the rules of the game why have rules then if your condemmed for sticking to them i wasn't even born when this happend but i can see he did nothing wrong bowling the way he did richie benaud's an idiot anyway don't listen to what he says make your own minds up is playing to ules wrong if it is then play without rules which is almost impossible
old man benaud's wrong again as usual it was not the most disgraceful thing on a cricket field cos how can someone just playing to the rules and doing nothing thats against the rules be disgraceful thats like saying someone who hit's a 4 is disgraceful cos if doing one thing thats allowed is disgraceful why shouldn't something else thats also allowed be disgaceful
@andrewhebron Probably the same as he felt almost immediately afterwards.... that he'd made a complete arse of himself in the eyes of the cricket world & been responsible for overseeing one of the most shameful moments in australian sport. Sadly, in the despotic, match fixing cricket world these days, this incident would probably not get nearly as much attention it got at the time as it just isn't the same game anymore.
Richie, you never spoke truer words. Your a bloke who, as an englishman, I can say is the best, unbiased cricketing commentator ever, Your blokes took the piss and you acknowledged it, Lord Benaud of Penrith, I salute you.
I think Richie Benaud is the best commentator ever,of any sport. He only ever spoke if things needed comment, the remainder of the time he said nothing. Completely unbiased and a gentleman. Others should listen and learn,I watch most sport with the sound off these days. Phil an Englishman.
Yep, it was a shocker and we've been trying to live it down ever since. To give our friends across the ditch credit they don't bring it up too often any more. It all came out in the end that Greg Chappell pretty well had a nervous breakdown on the field that day and when I saw him interviewed on it I finally felt really sorry for him. Every man has his limits and who can say with certainty what we might do if put under enough pressure-none of us really knows. But yes it was a shocker!
Richie Benaud shows his integrity abd its good to remind everyone that not all Aussies were happy about it. See Rod Marsh's demeanor on the field, he wasn't having any of it...the only bit I can't put in my pretty picture puzzle of Benaud was that he and Tony Greig were Packer Boys when I was 12 years old, just the couldn't get it at the time, still wonder
@mistersmith6000 - what's wrong with being a Packer boy? If it wasn't for world series cricket, cricket would be nowhere near as healthy as it is today.
I've been listening to the 12th Man for the past three months and now whenever I see Richie I excpect him to start swearing, but alas to no avail. Great commentary that, marvellous effort.
Yeah, thanks for the embarrassment I feel even now every time I think of it Greg. I can't believe anyone could be dumb enough and unsporting enough to do it. It gave NZ and the rest of the cricket world a stick they can whack us with forever any time they feel inclined. Trevor should have refused to do it anyway of course so he doesn't escape his share of the blame in my view.
well said Richie ...Just like the way he sums up things ...perfect , to the point , with style , elegance ,...Australia hav som of th best commentators..Richie Benaud, Bill Lawry, Tony Grieg r my all time fav..
I agree Australia has produced a lot of good cricket commentators (none finer than King Richie!), but Tony Greig was actually born in South Africa and played for England, although he now lives in Australia.
Though i don't expect you'll get more than 50% agreement on anything - let me correct you. Brian Mackechnie needed to hit a 6 of his first ball faced (the last of the match) to tie the match - not to win it. Greg Chappell, captain, instructed his brother Trevor to bowl underarm. Trevor shoudn't have been bowling but Greg did his sums wrong.
@IanGorton Totally agree (that's 100% of us). Very unlikely. I was responding to whambangthxmam from a while back if you scroll back a page. As an unrelated aside check cricinfo for Bradman scores a hundred in 3 overs. Admittedly 8 ball overs but for those who think 20-20 brought about fast scoring, think again
What's the definition of irony???? Misspelling the word dummies while you're calling someone it. No one cares about what you think "SnottyAust", Ritchie is one of the few remaining gentlemen in the world of sport, so why don't you go and get bent.
If it comes from Richie's mouth .. then LISTEN !! The guru is 100% correct on this .. again, as always ...

Underarm Bowl, last Ball to prevent NZ from getting a 4 or a 6 to win the game. Bowled by Greg Chappell. Naughty boy.

@2bluntbill Thing about it is even Brian McKechnie himself has stated that he doubts he could've hit a 6 anyway.

I think Richie disgraced himself by being part of an ad to promote gambling during an event that children attend ... cricket.
If thats the go then cricket is for dumbies who have no idea about a childs growing mind.
