Jim Cornette in my mind the tied with bobby heenan for the greatest manager of all time and he was definitely the third midnight not just a manager but he was the third midnight
Oh, Vader smacks around people, well if he hadn't he would have won the title. Just because you continually do something doesn't make it ok and guys don't have to accept it.
@AngelHatchets Yeah, it sounds about right. Remember, that includes comps for friends, "VIPs", promotional contests (e.g., radio call-ins) and of course they usually have to paper at least a small amount of the crowd with comps no matter what unless it's something like Wrestlemania or in a tiny arena. I was surprised at first to see a lot of Nitros in 1997 - the glory days mind you - where the house was small, maybe 5,000 with about 1/4 comped. About 1/4 comps seems right.
Cena's cool. People don't know what their on about, hating him and WWE.
Their the same dumbshits that constantly have to post "________, we comin for you nigga," and that WWE should go back to the way it use to be in the, "Attitude Era."
A lot of you may not remember or have only been watching Pro Wrestling in the past 3 years, but your heros, HHH, Shawn Micheals, and The Rock, were boring as shit and wasn't any better than the shit today.
I think Cornette truly knows the business, but he sure does always find a way to throw a dig in at Michaels, doesn't he? I know Shawn was a dick back then, but it doesn't need to be mentioned on EVERY commentary.
But, the one fact that is lost in time: for the WWF to even come CLOSE to drawing 60,000 people in 1997 was DAMN IMPRESSIVE, even WITH 12,500 comps....
@TwinFami Not when you're in the hometown of the company's biggest star with $10 tickets. I saw Goldberg and Hogan wrestle at the GA Dome in 1998 for the title and the tickets started at about $30 apiece. The place was only about 3/4 full and had a big black curtain blocking off the empty part. The GA Dome has a capacity of about 70k. I would imagine that if they had tickets on sale for $10 and even had 12'500 freebies then they could have filled the place up twice.
@Bystander81 Yeah, but where WCW messed the Goldberg-Hogan match was that they treated it as just another event. They announced the match about 2 weeks prior on Thunder, and it kinda came out of the blue, rather than a 2-3 month buildup to something like Starrcade. They were so bent on winning the ratings war that they screwed up what could've been the biggest payday in the history of WCW. And trust me-they were comping tickets that night too, as Bischoff was doing that at the time.
@TwinFami Yeah. I think we sometimes assume that wrestling pulls in the same crowds that baseball or basketball might (or within wrestling, a big show like Wrestlemania), in the middle 5 figures. Reading old WCW Nitro reports, even when it was hot in 1997, the shows were broadcast mostly from mid-size arenas with maybe 5K (and about 20-25% comped). The huge house/TV show audiences are rare, mostly big nights they build to in advance (e.g., 1998 Nitro at the Georgia Dome ~35,000)
@stufaman I couldn't agree more. Whether you love or hate him Jim Cornette always offers a fantastic insight into what was the peak of pro wrestling (mid to late 90's).
@Leediverify The one grumble I had about him was that tennis racket. I mean, Bossman and a nightstick ok. Jimmy Hart with a Megaphone and Mountie with a shockstick.
I could imagine it's difficult getting the respect he does from wrestlers without actually being one.
@stufaman Yeah, but in NWA at least (don't recall if they said this in WWF), the tennis racket was allegedly loaded, which is what made it a formidable weapon. Don't know if they ever had an angle where they figured out what was supposed to be in the racket.
@peterp21 Ok we know how wrestling works. But you could understand the mountie with a shock stick. Johnny Polo with his polo stick. Big bossman and so on. But if I was a ref and saw Cornette with that racket,
I'd have to ask "You're not going to hit with that are you?"
Cornette, "Oh no...." or one of his stinging rants.
Ref, "It's just you don't look like a tennis player and..."
@stufaman That's if the ref really thought Jacques Rougeau was a Mountie; Big Boss Man was a prison guard, etc. In fact, using that logic you would have thought they would have banned managers from ringside after the first 1,000 times they interfered in the match.
I was at that rumble. my tickets were not comp. it was still awesome though. The problem though is the alamo dome. it's just to damn big. It was a football stadium, but we've never had a football team. Now they could sell out the AT&T center no problem cause it's a basketball arena.
@josephD32 Go to Wrestlemania this year, you might get a couple. The last two years running they have had a couple of thousand comped. Matter of fact, last three years as I don't think they managed to fill up every seat in Orlando either.
wow shawn micheals was real douche bag back then!

Shawn fucked Vader bad, and Jim really believed in Vader. That, and he was his manger. Meaning every time Vader was on TV so was Corny.
