i have an 8 week old yellow lab puppy and we've been having a huge problem with him mouthing and biting. does anyone have any suggestions or know of any good videos to help with this? thanks :)
@amanda4636 Did u try the frozen butter technique? Rubbing it one your skin and letting the puppy lick it off will usually teach it to treat skin differently from other things. If that doesnt work u shouldget some outside help : )
@ilovesamsungverymuch I think an Akita. From what I heard, they are sort of a lap dog. Look up dog breeds who are lab dogs, or something like that. xD
@WarriorNerdz Akitas are not the best dogs for a new dog owner, because they tend to be more strong willed and need a more experienced handler (I know a breeder and someone who is a fan and owner of the breed) @ilovesamsungverymuch this is something you should consider as well, a good source can be to look for a reputable long time breeder of a dog you are interested in and see what it is like to own that breed.
Puppies will always find a home. Go to a shelter and adopt an older dog. Older dogs likely had a home it was accustomed to and then due circumstances beyond it's control it suddenly becomes homeless and in an environment that leaves it bewildered. That's the reality that's out there. Shelters full of dogs and cats that nobody wants because they're not "cute and cuddly". People are losing their homes and leaves dogs in empty houses. Shows like this piss me off. Yuppy media.
@ethicomm This show educates people about getting a specific breed and being ready. Education helps against dog abandonment and creates more situations of spaying/nuetering. The show describes adopting shelter dogs. Unfortunetly the majority of dogs in shelters tend to be breed 'undesirables' , I would say there needs to be more education for the public to stop this situation aka mixes and pitts deserve to be adopted too. Not just sanctimonious anger.
why would you need to name yourself twice on a youtube page. why arent you out there explaining that pitbulls, chows, akitas and shepards while being inherently more 'primitive' strains, deserve homes? People will always buy puppies therefore they need a checklist in order to determine readiness. More experienced dog owners adopt older dogs. Don't punish older dogs by assuming they werent the puppies bought and discarded at the spur of the moment. people need to be stopped from buying on impulse
@tiemedown but most people aren't understanding, experienced or learned enough to undo bad habits of an older dog. for a person with more limited experience a puppy is the way to go, so you're not stuck undoing a bunch of bad habits and you know what their traits are from square one.
@eyesea I would agree to a point...but puppies can be so difficult, owning a preowned trained mild older dog past their hormonal sequence may be easier than accidently causing bad habits in a young animal. I honestly think people should hang around other peoples pets before getting their own
@tiemedown i gotta disagree because i believe that a newer dog owner really needs the experience of crate training and other related to training a puppy. also puppies bond and learn much quicker.
@eyesea True but honestly alot of people get overwhelmed and let them sleep on the bed, leave them alone...I think responsible owners can handle any age but youre right...puppies are typically easier to bond with but sometimes older dogs can be easier for a novice, depends on the dog
@tiemedown I think people like that who go into dog ownership with no understanding or appreciation for what it is and what you need to put into it shouldn't be owning a dog. also i'd imagine a lot of adult adopted dogs get put up again when/if they get serious heatlh problems. an experienced owner knows more about health issues
@eyesea A good compromise would be to have puppy owners get preventative training and screening and then hopefully we wont have such an older dog crisis. Youre right though, people who dont understand dogs shouldnt be owning them.
@tiemedown By the way, have you been to a shelter lately and seen how many older dogs there are languishing inside those cages? You're right, this show is about educating people into getting more puppies. All I'm saying is PEOPLE, ADOPT OLDER DOGS AND CATS. THESE CREATURES ARE AT THE LAST TO BE CHOSEN. Again, sanctimoniously (and arrogantly) yours, Ethicomm
I work at a shelter. People adopt puppies becuase they went to raise a dog and because they have the misconception that something is inherently wrong with an older dog.. Education for people buying puppies lessons the number of dogs abandoned and education about 'undesirable' breeds and the versatility of older dogs is the only thing that can help the remainder. People wont learn anything from being brow beaten, this discussion isnt about your pride its about the lives of the animals. educate.
@ethicomm most dogs have significant health issues to say nothing or older dogs of unclear lines. if someone really doesn't care about big vet bills and long term health of their dog then i would agree about getting a mature pet.
