I feel sad that my last comment on here got too many negative votes to be shown because I said:
" I think she beats Patti out on this role. Her voice glides a lot smoother that Patti's does. Especially at "I'm their saviour". "
Feel free to disagree, but Loni's voice is smoother and I prefer that. If you like the barking that Patti does, that's your right. For me, this performance is more exhilirating than anything I've seen Patti do on youtube.
hmmm this sounds like Patti I am a Patti fanatic and this sounds like her but there are things missing. nooo this isnt her all though Loni does a hell of a job in the beginning sounding like her.
@EZYCHEESY i have the OLC recording, and she's ok as eva, but other than a press reel vid clip of rainbow high, never really saw her in performance. however, LOVED her in sunset..the best to play norma on broadway maybe? she was the happy medium between glenn (over the top performance) and betty (boring...put me to sleep.) and love elaine as piaf!!!
@EZYCHEESY are you kidding me? i'll never forget when i saw patti on b'way when i was in 8th grade. then i saw derin altay, and now i realize she wasn't bad, but she was no patti. then i saw teri klausner, nancy opel 3x, loni, flo and i can remember being so disappointed that none of them were as VISCIOUS as patti. now i can look at each actress and admire what they have done, but the way patti attacked (i think that is a good description) the role, i have to say she is unmatched as eva
Evita opened in 1980 at the Shubert and I worked as the doorman. Viewing this clip is like taking a step back in time. Each night, during a break, I would go to the mezz to watch this part of the show from the same exact angle as the person who videotaped this. Loni was fantastic and a very nice person. So were Jon Cypher and Scott Holmes. I left the job in 2/81. Would love to know what happened to the cast. Loni didn't imitate Patti. She did as she was directed making the role hers.
I saw Loni in this role many times in the original LA production, and she was not at all a Patti imitator. Her voice has a similar timbre, but the inflections and pressure points are all her own, and being a fantastic dancer, Loni's athletic Evita was exciting and dramatic to see. Rarely have I seen a leading lady with so much energy. Her Evita meant Business with a Capital B.
patti had some pretty bad reviews in this role even though she won the tony, it wasn't until she got to australia she felt comfortable in this part, the show was still an evolving animal at this stage, don't get me wrong, being british i think patti lupone is the most amazing performer, but whoever plays the role will always be compared to some one else. we all have our favourites, and lorni is pretty damn excelent!!!
Loni played this role for over three years, versus Patti's year and a half! She was great, as well as an original! You girls have just gotta get over it!!!
@merrick71 Loni eventually took over the role on Broadway (from Derrin Altay) but she was not the original Broadway Eva; Patti was. Loni was the original Eva in the First National Tour, also known as the Los Angeles Company.

Wow. I didn't think I could like anyone as much as Patti LuPone. This chick can wail. What a fantastic voice.

What's with the guy SL of center smoking?

@scotpj I think it's Che. He starts to sing "Rainbow Tour" immediately after and Che carries a prop cigar sometimes.

I saw Patti Lupone at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in Los Angeles and Loni Ackerman at the Shubert. Both were excellent. I preferred Loni.

Why can't the clip of Patti be as good quality?
evitastories 3 years ago
She sounds like she's imitating Patti pretty hardcore, if you ask me. That's not an original take on the role, in my opinion.

I said Loni STARRED on Broadway BEFORE Patti! I did not say in EVITA! She is great! Just get over it!

Why does it have to be that the good quality video is of someone other than Patti, while the videos of Patti are low quality? :(

well if i were in her position i would imitate patti too... she had some big shoes to fill and some great expectations to meet.

2nd to patti but i would say preety up there.....wow...does anyone have this full show 4 trade

Brava! Brava! Please, post more Evita! If you could post more Patti Lupone, I would be grateful, too!

Very good, but one can really tell she's imitating Patti's vocals.

Somewhat, but I think she beats Patti out on this role. Her voice glides a lot smoother that Patti's does. Especially at "I'm their saviour".

Loni starred on BROADWAY before Patti!
merrick71 3 years ago
I don't think so, since Patti was the one who created the role on Broadway in 1979.

@AriesModerator Absolutely not true. Loni has never needed to imitate anyone. Her Eva was completely her own.
