At Irvine Meadows, California in '86 the band came back on about 45 minutes after they'd finished with "Perfect Kiss" and played this full version of "Elegia" in all it's glory, followed by "Warsaw", for the benefit of the couple of hundred people who had remained waiting for the car park to empty.
@SeldomAthleticFC ... I was there! Unfortunately I missed that because my friends "had" to leave. I was so mad when I found out they came back on. This is my favorite song of their by far.
When I heard the Low-Life verion, I was blown away, but when it started to fade away at a seemingly random point, I was disappointed and confused, since New Order is always so good at timing and structure... and this explains it!
@iweta1 It is an elegy by the band members to the memory of Ian Curtis. Deeply sad, yet powerful and uplifting, I can't think of a better way for friends to mark his passing. It reminds me a lot of Morricone's Ecstasy of Gold, such passion and pain.
You know, I hear this song, and you know that image comes to me? Picture the end of a movie: a couple waltzing, sadly but lovingly, in the midst of nuclear fallout. They look into each-other's eyes as the radioactive ash falls upon them, burning the life out of them, knowing that their world is coming to an end, but also that their love will be eternal.
When I hear this song, I am reminded we're all stuck in the hampster wheel. Clock in at 8, walk home at 17, rest your batteries a few hours, rinse and repeat, over and over and over.
I partly feel this because I watched the great short movie "More" where this tune was in the background.
I first heard this on an episode of CSI. Doesn't anyone else think that some inspiration of this had to be from Ennio Morricone's work in Once Upon A Time in the West?
my gosh...this is such a great song, i find myself starting it over from the beginning after 2 minutes into the song just to hear it again, i forget it is 17 minutes long.....its so powerful...., imagine knowing you made such a masterpiece. it really is a lovely lovely song! and its from one of my favorite 80s movies pretty in pink... =]
Thanks for the memories, I'm back at university, smell of new vinyl, thinking of Ian Curtis, nearly in tears, blown away by this entire LP, even today it evokes a certain melancholy.
it's too long, why say in 17 mins what u could've easily said in 9 mins?

Elegia is a masterful piece of music.. I never tire of listening to it. And this isn't usually the genre I like.

How about me? How about you write a story to go with that image because it's awesome and we demand it.
Go on... I'll wait. *crosses arms*
