@twilighter410 actually charlie is the dad. he has a split personality, and emily may not know this per say, but she clearly states that Charlie is "fun like mommy." Charlie is the resut of David's anger and jealousy, Charlie is everything David is not. The movie is about schizphrenia, not ghosts. Did you notice that David wipes his hand after noticing some weird goo on it? It's from when he crushed a butterfly moments before when "Charlie" first met Emily. It's confusing, but it IS him.

sorry to say but split personality is different from schizophrenia...in schizo the other half or your alter ego is still you and nothing changed whereas in split personality the other half is really different and you are not conscious about it..

Besides, all through the film, we can see that the dad becomes Charlie when he's asleep.

He created Charlie because he's ashamed of him after his wife's death.

Emily actually knows Charlie is her dad but she can't tell him because obviously she's afraid. Afraid because a schizophrenic person can suddenly change and become his/her other personality straightaway. And besides she can't tell him because he wouldn't believe her. As a psychologist he knows well that problem...

Charlie is the dad really. The dad has multiple personalities but doesn't know it till the end. Dakota's character doesn't get shot in the end, but R. DeNeiro's Character (Dad & Charlie) ends up getting shot though. This whole movie is from the dad's POV (or Charlie's) & while it looks like the dad is doing normal things, he really isn't there.

Emily's dad is schizophrenic. He created an ideal lifestyle for himself. As he says, he should have known his wife was going to kill herself. Obviously he killed her because of his other personality (because she cheated on him). And besides, Emily gives us a telltale sign. Indeed, She says 'Charlie says he would have satisfied her'(in keeping with the fact that she cheated on him). His other personality is, in my mind, the person he was and that he wanna be again. 'A lot of fun', 'reassuring'...
