The idea of american and europeans to make the Amazon Forest international area is bad for Brazilian people. Unfortunately is too late to prove for international community that we have competence and organization to keep this area protect and safe against coruption and devastation.
Is this the best we can do? Without the rainforest we won't be here to kill each other. That would be a pity! Try harder, your life and everyone elses depends on it.
idk who said that shit about MotherEarth or whatever, all those should die along with the ones who want Amazon to be "international". We have enough people here to explore our loved country! We dont need americans asses coming here to mess it even more, go the f*ck away
More ONGs enstrangeiras indigenistas and environmentalists in the Brazilian Amazon than in the whole continent of Africa, which suffers from hunger, thirst, civil wars, the epidemics of AIDS and Ebola, the massacres and landmines.
Now a question: You do not think so, at least, highly suspicious ?
The Amazon is: gold, niobium, oil, the largest deposits of iron and manganese in the world, diamond, emeralds, rubis, copper, zinc, silver, the greatest biodiversity of the planet (which can generate large profits for foreign laboratories), and others many riches that added 14 trillions of dollars.
To enter the page of an ONG indigenistas, one of the first things you see is the emblem of the European Union, which invests millions of dollars in the demarcation of indigenous reserves in Brazil. Why?
When there are so many problems of greatest severity: earthquakes in El Salvador and India, the disaster in which lives in Africa, the drought in the northeast, the epidemic of AIDS, and so on.
And they spend millions to demarcar Indian reservations? ? And we are already too large.
"It is our duty to ensure the preservation of the territory of the Amazon and its Aboriginal inhabitants to enjoy the great European civilizations." (World Council of Christian Churches, headquartered in Europe, 1992)
Have all of you who speak Portuguese seen the thread on the Brazilian version of this vid? It's full of the most UNBELIEVABLE prejudice, racism and ethnocentric rubbish. Worth a read, though, and a few comments.
Baraitalo, that is a great pity and achieves nothing. If people cannot discuss something with an open mind , even if they disagree with each other, then it shows a lack of intelligence and education. Personally, I believe such people should be ignored in these forums as all they want is a reaction to continue their hate and negative ideas. I say LOVE and PEACE! Greenpeace ! x
We, people of the world, can not repeat the same things the americans, australians, southafricans did in their country with their very own aboriginal societys, we have to take a stand, aim high the freedom of our people.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer who wrote:
Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.
Unbelievable... the way that the one farmer referred to the indians as "their" indians shows how they feel about them. Coming in, taking the indians' land and then trying to threaten them and everyone who might want to help them.
that is horrific and very very sad. Pressure must be put on the Brazilian government by the International community to respect freedom of press and international interest in the rainforest and the people who rely on it for survival. I wonder what the UN thinks of this video ? Thank god noone was hurt this time, but what about next time?
This is not the way to do it. In Brazil freedom of press is guaranteed by law. There are police and justice courts. Do never talk about international interest in the rainforest, if there was such interest the Kyoto protocol would already be in place. No country has any moral to lecture Brazil about its forest. What this video shows is horrible but I think the UN should be more concerned with the war in Iraq and the iminence of a war in Iran, by thosewho only think of oil!
I agree, brasiliensis, but this was not just about freedom of the press, or the right to come and go in freedom, as guaranteed by the constitution. It is also about the rights of indigenous people to be heard and live on their traditionally-worked lands, as guaranteed to all Brazilians.
I don't disagree with that, and think greenpeace did a good job. What I don't agree and never will is with the interventionof foreigners in this. We are a sovereign country and, yes, we have strong, solid, democratic instituions.
Greenpeace is an international organisation and as such its supporters come from everywhere. We are all 'foreigners' (as you word it) to one another living in hundreds of countries with different lives and governments! But we all have one thing in common - to protect our planet including Brazil's rainforest. Climate changes does not respect borders my friend !
To protect the rainforest there is the Kyoto Protocol. Why has it not been put in place yet? It is not Brazil tha's stopping it. As for Climate change, a good start would be to try and lower consumism in yodeveloped countries. Is it possible?
The kyoto protocol has been in place for some time. I believe at the last count over 170 countries have ratified it. No it's not perfect, for sure there is still a long way to go. Especially with the USA who is by far has the largest ecofootprint but hasn't ratified KP yet. However at the moment KP isn't enough. If it were then maybe Greenpeace and others wouldn't need to be in Brazil?
I agree with you that wasting and using too much energy in developed countries urgently needs action and change. And many countries and individuals are trying to do just that. Anything is possible if we work together. Please stop making this an argument between Brazil V The rest of World. Its about protecting our environment and freedom of press.
again, i agree, brasiliensis. as one of my colleagues said in brasil 'our laws are so beautiful that if you were to read them, you'd cry with happiness. the problem is the application of the laws'. just like the land laws, about traditional working on lands. they don't just apply to índios, but also to other traditionally worked lands (ex-slave colonies, etc.) the rio preto lands have been worked and used by the enawene for longer than the fazendeiros. ponto final.
also, OPAN and Greenpeace have already requested an official enquiry, and handed over digital image (pics and vids) and this has been sent from the procurator in cuiabá to the federal authorities. hence it is clear that brazilian law IS working.
No Baraitalo. Just because evidence has been sent it does not mean brazilian law is working. Firstly this situation should never have happened to begin with. Secondly the law will only be proved to be working when Greenpeace and international journalists are able to FREELY return and move within Brazil without fearing for their lives and without intimidation. When this happens then you may say the law has worked - which I very much hope will be the case.
The problem there is not Brazil as a nation, but of a few simple, uneducated and unscrupulous men who are carving into a region of inexpensive and fertile land. They are afraid of attention being drawn to their activities. International attention is helpful, but international intervention will only increase opposition. The Amazon belongs to Brazil. The only thing to do is keep big business out of the region, and educate and ENCOURAGE proper management by LOCAL interest groups.
I do understand your point. I was meaning international 'support' as opposed to intervention. However you raise another valid point 'education'. If more people in Brazil and indeed this forum had studied the 'international' importance of the Amazon for our whole planet, then perhaps more people would stand up and become involved with protecting it. There seems to be a lot of ignorance about why the World is interested in preserving it. Global warming means just that GLOBAL.
All right, here in Brazil we have a very used answer for those who defend Amazon intercionalization (that was once said by a politician). "If we have to intercionalize Amazon, why others countries doesn't have to intercionalize their "treasures"?"
It is funny see that global warming "excuse" to take away Brazil's biggest wealths, when US even signed Kyoto Protocol.
It is not right to do what we do with Amazon, I agree that it should be MUCH better protected, BUT that thing of intercionalization is much more an economic interest (new drugs and everything else...) than an enviroment concern.
You don't have to be so apologetic. Indeed, there should be no blame against any one country: not against Brazil or any other country for that matter. But, it is true that no one country as a whole is doing its best to protect "mother earth", which at the end means protecting ourselves. The real challenge is to make the change one would like to see in the world in one's self, just as Gandhy would say.
Don't expect for others to do what you yourself haven't.
It is sad to see corruption and economic interests in front people lives. But even in the big centers you can say that honesty isn't a common authorities characteristic.
I've been to rude in my other commentaries. I get real pissed when I read something about Amazon intercionalization. But I agree with someone that said about international support, if was possible to the government to fiscalize those people. There are plenty of "enviroment protection" institution that are corrupt too....
If the "mother land" is for everyone in this world why my country have to pay for pretoleum, food, iron ore...? Why isn't everything free? It comes from "mother land", doesn't it?
I also agree local interest groups should be supported and encouraged. That is one thing Greenpeace is very good at doing. It is shocking to some countries to see the mayor in this video giving himself powers like a dictator with no respect for the law. In my country this would never happen as people would remove him and his supporters instantly. I believe local communties have the power to enforce the law and hope Brazil's people will speak up for justice.
This video shows that Brazilian law is not working + business no respect for the law. The town mayor was breaking the law and the Police did nothing! It is a disgrace. Noone is lecturing Brazil about the rainforest , but its DOES have importance for the whole World. I disagree that it 'belongs' to Brazil. Mother earth belongs to herself not to man. Not to any of us. Like noone owns the seas either.
NO, not true. This video shows that brazilian law was broken, not that it doesn't work. It was broken and this needs to be brought to justice, before you can say the law doesn't work.
Ok fair comment. I'm interested to know what your ideas are for those that broke the law to be brought to justice and how Greenpeace can be guaranteed safe passage back. Because now the World is watching...............
but it DOES BELONG to Brazil ... or maybe if they discover oil in Colorado, the United States will give Denver away to the Chinese to use as they please ...
so when the law fails in, say, New York City, it means that the United States needs other countries to intervene because they are not capable of preserving order themselves
if foreigners want to help, then preserve YOUR OWN natural resources and EDUCATE YOUR OWN PEOPLE to work with LOCALS to resolve issues of mutual importance
Im not from the USA. I never mentioned the USA. I dont care about the USA. This video isn't about the USA. It is about the Amazon being controlled by 'just a few' Brazilian farmers. The uneducated only talk about 'ownership' of rainforests / Brazil - educated people understand the International significance of rainforests - I dont mean for wealth - I mean for providing OXYGEN which we ALL breathe and preventing climate change. GP ARE working with local people -a FEW farmers are stopping this.
It is everyone's responsibility to protect the rainforest and her people. When law fails or freedom of press is stopped like this then the people must unite from ALL countries and decide what to do. A friend in San Paulo tells me some people are scared to speak up against so many laws being broken but that many people respect and want Greenpeace there.
I don't want greenpeace to go away. And many people speak up everyday a gainst all sorts of things. The problem here is the media, that keep important information from the people, like in the US, where they don't inform americans on many truths about their wars. We're a country no different than any other, with problems that are up to us to solve.
This idea that people from all countries should decide on a brazilian issue is completely despised here.
I agree with you. Most countries, including mine (the UK) has problems with the media reporting the truth and indeed the Government on many subjects, including the Iraq war, nuclear defence and power, GM crops. All these subjects have international interest whether it be in your country or mine. If the UK was home to the last fresh water I would expect you in Brazil to have something to say about it.
I did not say I do no want greenpeace here, they are more than welcome. What I am saying is that this is a brazilian issue, it is not for all countries to decide what to do. A complaint has been made to the police? To a lawyer? The video must be seen by the federal police, the reaction must be done within the law by brazilian institutions, under the eyes and pressure of brazilian people.
The green peace can go there if they really want it.
