  • The "point" of using a paper filter instead of a K&N is to keep the inside of your engine clean. A race builder doesn't care about long term longevity, so yeah, a K&N is worth the added crap that gets let into your intake. Unless you plan on rebuilding your engine sooner rather than later, a paper filter will keep out lots of fine sand. Do an oil analysis test and find out for yourself what's in there.

  • that's a ridiculous statement

and obviously you were told that by a moron who knew nothing about cars

K&N's actually filter MORE dirt out of ur motor than paper filters and protect ur motor more

don't go around making ridiculous statements just 'cause you don't believe in a product

  • My own empirical study saw more dust on the inside of the air cleaner housing when using a K&N. I'm going to concur with whatever moron IaintTheHerb is listening to.

  • @Domman56 fail

  • Slight revision... after a very carefull frame by frame my time was 15.9 seconds.

  • Buddy, the OM617 does NOT go 0-60 in 11 seconds unless you are going down hill or have it heavily modded. Heck, take your filter OFF and see how much of a difference you get on your 0-60. derher65 and turbo617 do know what they are talking about because I've heard their discussions on the 617 many MANY times, they are not some Joe Blow that is hasseling you.

  • You're right. Even with all my modifications, I get only 13.5 seconds 0-60mph. Thats with stock internal injection pump settings. However, shifting my manual hurts the time by about 1/2 - 1 second because of both lag of the turbo catching up again and the time shifting when power is not being put to the ground.

  • Show me just 1 link.

  • h ttp: / / w w w. youtube . c o m / watch?v=fcsgy PGga xg&mode= relat ed&search=

    O.K. you asked for it. 11-12sec 1985 300cd

  • That was 15 seconds too. Watch the tach. It jumps at 38 seconds then hits 60 at 53 seconds.

  • 0-60MPH 15seconds by my count. Give it a full tune up, change all the oil, fluid and filters and put in a K&N AIR FILTER and your 0-60MH time will be about 1-2 seconds faster.

  • K&N is certainly low restriction, but it comes at the cost of filtration. I would not use a K&N on an engine you want to keep.

How do you give a diesel a tune up? These aren't like gasoline engines that you can put new plugs, wires, and a rotor on. This is actually a normal time for this model.

  • (1)but it comes at the cost of filtration? I don't think so, thats why my dad always seems to have to clean his because it always seems to turn black after a short period of time. (2)My brothers 190D (diesel) mercedes was almost 40degrees out of time(we retimed it but still engine blew a little later) and on the replacement engine the valves are faulty. (3)Other 5cyl turbo diesels like yours have done 0-60 in 11 sec.

  • If they are not carefully oiled they allow dust in. The '87 300d does an 11 second 0-60, but it had the 6 cylinder(20+ more HP) and weighs 300lbs less. I know several modified om617s. The best 0-60 I've seen is about 13.5s with intercooler, more boost, etc. 15 seconds is normal for stock.

  • HA, wrong again. Its easy to oil the K&N. The 0-60 11sec cars I saw were the same body style 2-4door of yours which only comes with either the(4dr-4cyl 5cyl) or (5cly turbo 2-4door) 1985 was the las year of those. The 6 cyl has completely different body styles than the ones saw do those 0-60 in about 11-12 sec, theirs just run better, thats why people like the 80's diesels + around 30MPG highway(when runnung good).

  • I have a K&N on my truck. It's not hard, but takes half a day to do right. It's not worth the hassle and added expense IMHO.

I know there's a couple of Finnish guy that do 9 second 0-60 with a OM617. It gutted, has a monster turbo, a Myna modified injection pump, and intercooler. Post a link to a stock 617 doing 0-60 in less than 14 seconds. I'd love to see it.

  • Factory 0-60 time for the 82-85 300D/CD/TD is ~15 seconds in stock form.

There will be no (Zero, zilch, nill, none) change in power with a K&N filter on the 300D/CD/TD/SD. The power is mechanically controlled by the injection pump by how much fuel it injects. The additional airflow through the engine (be it flow or boost pressure beyond 13psi) will not cause a gain any power whatsoever.

  • Have you ever looked through a K&N filter, even a properly oiled one? You can see clear light (holes) through the filter media.

Just use a good WIX/NAPA paper filter and your engine will be clean and happy.

  • Yes, I know. I CAN see through it when looking at the sun, but the k&n's still filters as good or better than the papers. I just don't see the point of using a paper filter that clogs the engine that much to the point where it's almost choking. Here look --> w w w. racerpartswholesale .c o m / k n 8 . h t m

  • That website is useless. They show no tests and it's all claims, no proof. The key is "wholesale" in the link. They are trying to SELL you those expensive filters. Of course they are going to tell you they are the best thing ever!

    Check out some actual tests: h t t p :// home . stny . rr . c o m/ jbplock / ISO5011 / SPICER . h t m

  • Great link turbo.

Cello, apply the "no free lunch" rule. You can't get something for nothing. If it's less restrictive then it must pass more dirt. If it captures more dirt, it must be more restrictive.

  • I went to that website and its all shit. The ONLY way you can really do a real test is take all those filters, put them in several of the exact same vehicles and take them for a LONG drive one right next to another until the vehicles stop running from dirt messing up the engine, maybe on a desert road.

  • This is the whole point of a lab test. You can carefully control the conditions to get fair results. In real life one of the cars would be hit by another driver before the test was complete, another would have a transmission failure or something, an the test would never be completed. Just because you dobn't like reality does not make it wrong. For example, I don't like the level of blowby my 300CD has, but I have no choice but to accept it.

  • celloprof,

Then there is no point in arguing about it. You have obviously made up your mind to believe the hype behind K&N. If you won't accept professional lab tests performed on a $285,000 machine at the machines manufacturer then nothing will convince you that you are wrong.

  • I heard a whistling noise is this a turbo diesel?

On my ford diesel 4 cylinder, adjusting the fuel pump makes it a different car, hardly any turbo lag any more, just a little smokey pre-boost. MPG actually seems better when I drive steady cos I can hold a higher gear at lower revs etc, if I drive hard I loose about 5mpg, but thats balls out thrashing at 115mph.

  • Yes, 5 clyinder, 3 liter, IDI turbo diesel.
